foodbanks worked, what
kind of food is donated

all questions that Ernie was
happy to answer.
Foodbanks
in
Durham
are operated by Durham
Foodbank, one of many
projects run by the Durham
Christian Partnership. The
proliferation of foodbanks
has seen the number of
distribution points in the
region rise from just one
in Durham City to 25 across
the county.
The Prince Bishops children
wanted to help raise some
funds and made Christmas
biscuits, which they sold,
raising a total of £97.18. The
money is to be donated to
St Claire's, Bishop Auckland
and to Shildon Foodbank.
In addition, the children
and staff took along food
which was donated to the
Newton Aycliffe distribution
point.

Foodbank is available online

Merry Christmas
From The Town Crier
This will be the last issue of The Town Crier for
2014 and staff here at the paper would like to
take this opportunity to thank our readers and
contributors for making this publication what it is,
and for your continued support.
Thanks also to all of our advertisers, without whom
it wouldn’t be possible to print this community
newspaper.
We would also like to say thank you to a few
people who help bring you your paper every week,
come rain, shine or snow!
Most of our contributors are volunteers without
whom, as a not-for-profit Community Interest
Company, we would not be able to run.
Thank you to Norman Nash, John Brennan and
Tom Stephenson, three voluntary contributors.
Thanks also to everyone at Addo Print in Newton
Aycliffe and to our distributor, Rachel Ridley.
Thank you to our many deliverers, who do a
fantastic job in every weather conceivable.
Our biggest appreciation, however, is for you, our
readers, who make this paper what it is. Without
your news and information we would not be able
to fill the paper every week. Please keep it coming!
We look forward to seeing you all in 2015 with
our first issue of the New Year on Friday 9th
January.
Merry Christmas! From Jeff, Steph, Les,
Sarah & Richard at The Town Crier.

A Christmas Reflection from
Reverend David Tomlinson - St John’s Church
It was 12:30pm, the wind was howling, the odd flake of snow dancing by, Mams,
Dads and Grandparents were already queueing to see their children perform in
the Christmas production.
From 1:30 the church echoed with the sound of children’s voices singing of
ancient stories, tales of shepherds and wise men, a baby and a donkey. One little
girl, her cheeks flaming from the cold outside, grinned at me as she passed, ‘hey
Revd David’ she said, ‘it’s nearly Christmas isn’t it?’
The excitement in her voice was unmistakeable and the gleam in her eye spoke of
the joy she was feeling. I asked her what she loved best about the season, ‘I love’
she said before pausing to think ‘I love the way my Mam always loves the present
I give her, and kisses my nose, and laughs when she unwraps it’.
I couldn’t resist asking what this present was; I was guessing that it must be something pretty special.
‘Don’t tell Mam’ said the child gravely, I promised not to. ‘I have drawn a picture; it has on it me, Mam, and
my baby sister. Nana helped me cut it out and we put it in a frame we got down the street, Mam still has
the one I made last year.’ I smiled and asked why she had done a picture again, this time there was no pause
‘because Mam says I am her Christmas fairy and her fairy wish for Christmas is a happy family, so I give
everyone a big smile!’
Sometimes it seems to me that children get Christmas instinctively, something about love, something about
family, and something about secrets kept and then revealed as wonderful. As I get older I find Christmas
calls to the child in me to rediscover once again the simple truths of a season that so easily gets cluttered
with stuff that means little. Jesus was born surrounded by those who loved him, family, neighbours, those
who looked out for him as he grew, they were there for each other. Perhaps the greatest gift any of us can
give is that gift of love, the heartfelt delight in each other, the sense that no matter what, family counts
more than anything. As Jesus grew he taught that each one is family, each person precious, each child,
woman, and man is a uniquely glorious result of love, brothers and sisters together a part of one human
family. So at Christmas when the skies are the darkest when better to make family love shine brightest, to
show we care, to look out for each other, and in doing so see a happy Shildon family this Christmas.

A Christmas Message from
Major Linda Watson - Salvation Army
I took some time out yesterday and watched a short Christmas film called “Solstice”,
in which the priest said these words, “Christmas is the time of year when we get
what we need, not what we want”.
It made me think,- is it? - for in many situations this Christmas will be about
getting what we want even if it puts families into difficult financial situations trying to provide the “must have” games, toys and electrical gadgets that every kid
wants.
It is a very different scenario having what we want to having what we need.
For Christians, Christmas is about Jesus - “It’s simply Jesus”, as a Salvation Army
piece of music is entitled. So what do we need - surely it is that spirit of faith, goodwill and understanding.
Much has been said, and indeed, is being observed, about the Christmas Day Truce in 1914 at the start of the
First World War, when men laid down their arms, many of them not even knowing what the War was really
about, and held out the hand of friendship and peace.
What does Christmas mean to you? - I hope it is a recognition of the Christ-child, Jesus, coming to earth as The
Prince of Peace, for that, and He, is what we, and the whole world needs this Christmas time.
May you all know the peace that comes with the presence of Jesus in your lives this Christmas.

A Christmas Message from
The Mayor of Shildon, Cllr Henry Nicholson
It is a great honour and privilege to represent you all, the Townspeople of Shildon. We have attended many events, both in
Shildon and around our region, and whilst lasting friendships
have been forged consideration has also been given to the variety
of challenges that face us all in these changing and difficult
times.
Fundraising is extremely important for all organisations, and
thankfully, we all can help, either by donating time, money items
or just promoting events. My charities this year are the Mara
Unit, Bishop Auckland General Hospital and Help for Heroes,
who again need our help and support through difficult times.
Thank you to everyone who has supported my fundraising.
My prayers are with al of the armed forces serving our country, wherever they may are this Christmas and I
hope that they all return safely to their families. We owe them so much for providing us with the comfort of
being safe in our own country.
Only too often young people are blamed for all of the trouble in the area, but I have had the great honour of
attending and presenting awards to young people of this town who have achieved greatness and will continue
to be proud young people of the town. Again, this was demonstrated during the Angels and Kings Procession
and Carol Service. Thank you all.
I am very grateful for all the help and support that I have had from the staff of Shildon Town Council, without
whom I could not have carried out my duties as Town Mayor. I also wish to give thanks to the Town Crier,
Shildon Council workforce and the staff at the Civic Hall. It goes without saying that I should thank my wife
Pat and daughters Louise and Rachael for their unconditional support over the last 33 years.
On this note I wish all the Townspeople and ex Shildonians around the globe a happy and peaceful Christmas.
Can I ask that during this holy time you all bear in mind the sick, elderly, lonely and anyone struggling financially who would benefit from a neighbourly kind word. I would like to finish by wishing you all a happy and
healthy New Year as I am sure we will all meet new challenges in 2015. God bless you all. x

compliments of the season and all the best for
2015. We would like to thank everyone for their
support since we opened. See you all in 2015!
Shildon Police would like to thank everybody from the town
who has supported the local neighbourhood policing team this
year.
We are always grateful for the help and information provided
to us, which brings about so many more successful convictions.
An additional thanks goes to the people who attended the
Christmas PACT meeting on Thursday 18th December. During
the meeting members got to hear about numerous problem
solving initiatives and operations the team have been involved
in over the year, and how successful these have turned out for
the local community.
Alan Fryatt & Co
They were also informed about very successful crime results
including the fact that crime overall this year to date is down
14% in Shildon.
Thanks for your continued support

Clinical
Commissioning
Group (CCG), the organisation responsible for
planning and purchasing
health services on behalf
of the 272,000 residents
in the area, is continuing
to run the scheme which
was originally introduced in
November 2013 to improve
access to healthcare for
patients.
A number of practices
in the area will run the
Saturday opening scheme
until March 2015 with
patients able to access a
choice of:
•
appointments
for
Saturdays pre-booked with
the GP practice
• urgent appointments
booked on Saturdays via
NHS 111
• urgent walk in appointments on Saturdays.
The scheme aims to
improve access to GP
services during weekends
and reduce the pressure on
hospital A&E departments,
allowing them to concentrate on more urgent cases.
Since the scheme was
launched it has been
successful in increasing
access for patients whilst
providing better quality
and continuity of care. The
scheme offers flexibility
for those working through
the week and ultimately
offers care closer to home,
with indications suggesting
that weekend opening has
had a positive impact on
both A&E and urgent care
activity.
Dr Stewart Findlay, Chief
Clinical
Officer
from
Durham Dales, Easington
and Sedgefield CCG said,
“We are committed to
increasing patient access to
GP appointments outside
current contracted hours
with a view to improving
patient satisfaction with
opening hours whilst maintaining standards of access
and availability during core
practice hours.
“There is evidence to show
that continuity of care from
GPs reduces the likelihood
of emergency admissions
to hospital.”
Hallgarth Surgery will be
open from 9am to 12 noon
every Saturday until March.

Shildon bow out of the Vase
Shildon AFC’s chance of
major silverware in the
F.A. Vase came to an
end on Wednesday 17th
December when they were
well beaten 3 – 2 in the
3rd Round by Shaw Lane

taking the lead after just
90 seconds when Ben Wood
headed home.
Shildon nearly went 2 – 0
up with a good shot from
Billy Greulich-Smith but the
keeper punched the ball
away. Shaw Lane levelled

minutes when a free kick
from 20 yards out by Shane
Lane took a deflection
past keeper Kyle Hayes.
Afterwards, the Northern
Counties East League side
hardly allowed Shildon
many chances until the
89th minute when a long
through pass found Micky
Rae, who floated the
ball over the advancing
keeper for Shildon’s 2nd
goal. Too little too late.
Final Score: Shaw Lane
Aquaforce 3 Shildon AFC 2.
On the night Shildon were
beaten by a far better side.
