This course is primarily based on the publication, World Music Drumming (Hal Leonard) by Dr. Will Schmid (past president, NAfME; author). Participants will learn how to implement and teach a course or an experience in World Music Drumming. The Level 1 class assumes no prior experience with drumming. Those with no background and individuals with prior experience (even trained percussionists) will benefit from learning how the World Music Drumming curriculum is approached from the very beginning. Because drum ensembles, songs, and movement are taught orally, teachers trained in notation often experience a significant paradigm shift. Level 1 Class Daily classes include large group instruction, small group interaction with guided microteaching/leading, and small group ensemble creation/ improvisation. You will learn how to drum, sing, move, play xylophones and recorders, and teach and lead others. You will learn how to integrate drumming into other school and life experiences, and you will also receive supplemental songs and leader strategies not published in the original curriculum. Training in West African and Caribbean dance will be offered at some locations. World Music Drumming: Level 2 – FL, NM, WI, VA, MA, OR only (may be repeated, *see p.6) For those who have taken Level 1 (or want to repeat Level 2) and want some reinforcement for the original World Music Drumming curriculum plus lots of new ensembles, more songs, movement, recorders (bring or purchase $33 Ghanaian flute— FL, WI, VA, MA only) and xylophone ensembles. This course is based on a review of World Music Drumming (Hal Leonard) by Dr. Will Schmid, and supplementary Sowah Mensah teaching the Gyil book/CDs: More New Ensembles and Songs, and Global Grooves (June, 2014), and music by the other faculty. photos by RPetersohn Participants will learn how to improve their teaching and leading of World Music Drumming. Level 2 participants will also share strategies and materials for using WMDrumming in community contexts such as summer workshops, spiritual settings, wellness, and recreation experiences. Many participants take Level 2 four or more times. The content expands and changes yearly – see p.6. Lead Drumming w/ Josh Ryan 3 – FL, WI, VA only (may be repeated, *p.6) For those who have taken Levels 1 and 2. Course content includes drumming, singing, and dancing from Ghana (Ga, Akan, Ewe peoples), gyil xylophone ensembles from N. Ghana, Ghanaian flute playing (bring or purchase $33 Ghanaian flute–FL, WI, VA only) and Caribbean (Cuba, etc.) drumming, singing. The course content changes somewhat each year and many participants repeat Level 3 for a Adenkum gourd practice lifetime — repeaters sign up for the “Latin Drumming Techniques” course title, *p.6 . Working on a Cuban piece photos by RPetersohn World Music Drumming: Level 3 Level 3 is taught by Sowah Mensah (Ghanaian Master Drummer, Composer, Macalester College, MN) and Josh Ryan (drumming from Ghana and Caribbean specialist, Percussionist, Baldwin Wallace U., OH). The WI Level 3 workshop is open only to those who have had level 2 with Sowah Mensah at any location. World Music Drumming: curriculum update – TX, MO only photo by RPetersohn NEW! For teachers who have taken WMDrumming Level 1 and want to broaden their competence with the WMDrumming Curriculum. Participants learn fresh approaches to Ensembles 1-7 using newly created strategies and teaching materials. The course includes additional songs, recordings, movement, and related drum, xylophone and recorder ensembles from supplementary sources such as the Peanut Butter Jam, Beatbox, and Global Grooves (June, 2014) books/CDs. Teachers will micro-teach ensembles different from those in Share a drum Level 1. Participants will also expand their cultural background for the music studied. Colleague sharing of practical classroom issues will include assessment, core standards, discipline, and program planning, etc. Faculty will consist of K-12 specialists with years of experience in the WMDrumming Curriculum. See workshop locations (pp. 9-11) for faculty at each site. Breakout group micro teaching 4 The Curriculum Update course is an optional course that falls somewhere between WMDrumming Levels 1 and 2. After taking Level 1, you may either take this course or go right to Level 2. Kids, choir & Drums – SD, WI only (may be repeated, *p.6) (for teachers of singing and choirs in elementary, middle school) What is more fun than singing, moving and drumming? This workshop is geared toward elementary- and middle-school teachers of vocal music, including music educators, church youth group leaders, and community group leaders. Individuals with all levels of music instruction are welcome and previous drumming experience isn’t necessary. The course will include strategies for Lynn Brinckmeyer & students singing (including reading through choral octavos), movement, and drumming from a wide variety of publishers and sources. The class will also include participant sharing of ideas and teaching strategies. Faculty include Dr. Lynn Brinckmeyer, Dr. Will Schmid (WI only), and other guest faculty. Walt hampton Hot marimba – MA, OR only (may be repeated, *p.6) This workshop, offered for the ninth time, is taught by Walt Hampton, famous for popularizing the vibrant new Zimbabweanstyle marimba playing found in his publications. Participants will experience first-hand the benefits and excitement of Zimbabweanstyle marimba music in their classroom. You will learn playing and teaching techniques from this master teacher as you play, and also gain background information on this fascinating music. Participants will also learn about arranging and composing pieces for performance, and the keys to creating a high-level performing group Walt Hampton teaching at your own school. Orff teachers will love it — pieces are playable on Orff xylophones! Class limit: 30. Marimbas are provided for the class with help from teachers and Bourne Marimbas, Bellingham, WA.
