Blue Skies of Texas, Health and Wellness Services, are proud to host an Open House for the newly developed Nursing Simulation Lab. The Simulation Lab was made possible through the generosity of The White Elephant, 1 Deadline: Friday, Dec 12 @ 4:[email protected] The Thrift Shop and Mrs. Anne Bowbeer. The donations made possible a renovation of the old training rooms to what is now a bright and airy education suite for nurses to learn and practice. Donations also made possible the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for real life, hands-on simulation skills training. In addition to hands-on training, nurses will also receive additional instruction related to disease processes, nursing assessment and treatment. The Open House will recognize our donors during a private ceremony, followed by the open house for all starting at 2:45pm with presentations and tours every thirty minutes. Transportation for BST West campus residents is available and will leave the Main Lobby at 2:45pm and return from East Campus at 3:45pm. He was able to steal one roll, fresh from the oven, from the kitchen counter and of course EVERY time the refrigerator door opened after the leftovers were placed in there you can bet he was there! Trust me, he didn’t want for anything…he shared in the Thanksgiving meal with the rest of the family, with one exception. My daughter is a vegetarian so we bought a vegetarian “turkey” for her (actually, it was very tasty). Bob managed to steal a piece of it from the kitchen counter; however, he promptly spit it out. Apparently he’s not the vegetarian type! I received cards, phone calls, messages and kind words asking to please do it again. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, but above all we need new talent. If you would like to sing, dance, play an instrument or act, please let me hear from you. We had such fun, and we’d like to share it with you. MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (MOAA) By: Bill Knehans For most of us the acronym DEERS is so commonplace that it has almost become a household word. Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) is a database of military beneficiaries, maintained by the Department of Defense, who are entitled to TRICARE benefits. Sponsors are automatically registered in DEERS, but family members must be enrolled by the sponsor. Your DEERS eligibility is verified whenever you seek to use TRICARE benefits. Mistakes in the database can cause problems with TRICARE claims, so you should ensure that your information is up-to-date and accurate. Any changes that affect your family should be reported. You can check the accuracy of your information by going to milConnect, the subject of a previous article, contact the Defense Manpower Data Center Support Office (800-538-9552), or go to www.tricare.osd.mil/deers. THE HAM BAND NEWS By: Bill Overacker Is that a clothes line on Towers 3 and 4 roof, or maybe it’s a wire for perching birds to view Blue Skies West activities? No! This is a G5RV all band high frequency antenna erected during June 2013 to support BST’s amateur radio club. This versatile “T” shaped wire antenna was invented by Louis Varney, a British Ham, over 40 years ago. He named his invention with his call sign-G5RV. This antenna is connected to a coaxial cable located within the elevator shaft, and descends into the Ham Radio Room connecting to the ICOM transmitter/receiver unit. A ground strap connected to the rig protects the station from electrical atmospheric impulses. These lines were installed by the former ham club, and finding them above the ceiling tiles was a challenge! With the G5RV antenna approximately 120 feet above ground, communication is enhanced in both signal and range. The antenna is an essential component of any ham station, and BST West has a quality set-up thanks to the support of the management and residents. It's the language of Mah Jongg, the fascinating game of tiles, luck and skill. Why do so many people love MJ? Above all, it's fun! It's competitive, it's sociable, it requires strategy, it's relaxing--and it's thrilling. There's nothing more exciting than the moment you can finally call "MAH JONGG" and a small reward comes your way. Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B & A Days - 2nd Wed of each month in Card Room 112 the Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor. Fridays, 1-3:30pm in CC3 and Saturdays, 1-3:30pm in CC2. WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By: Martha Wesson Do you think Mah Jongg seems like a difficult game to learn? Is that why you haven’t come to CC3 on Tuesday afternoons? Well, you might be encouraged to learn that Mah Jongg is actually a combination of many games you have probably already played and liked. There’s a bit of “Gin Rummy” since Pungs and Chows are similar to the matches and runs that win a Rummy hand. The tiles remind us of Dominoes, and we are taking chances with each draw that the next tile will fit into or finish a hand the way “Poker” does. Because we often use groupings or melds to complete a hand it seems related to “Pinochle” or “Canasta” too. And our Charleston is similar to the passing of cards in “Hearts.” See what I mean? It isn’t like the matching-tile video game called “Mah Jong” (with only one “g”), but it is a very popular game all over the world in various versions. Come see for yourselves and experience “Mah Jongg Laughter Therapy”…a good way to ward off cognitive memory difficulties and exercise the face muscles as you laugh and smile your way through Tuesday afternoons. See you in CC3 about 1pm! BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS By: Robert Yanke 9-Ball, Tuesday, Nov 18: Today we had nine players with Dutch drawing the high number to wait for a partner. First game, Pro/Ski beat Lite/T-man with a four ball run and Knife/Tomcat beat Dandy/Big John with a three ball run. Then Dandy/John beat Lite/T-man to give Dutch Lite as a partner. Dutch/Lite beat Pro/Ski with a three ball run and went to the finals with a two ball run over Knife/Tomcat. Pro/Ski won the next two games to meet Dutch/Lite again and took the last two games for the Championship with a run and a big cut. Congratulations Pro & Ski. 8-Ball, Saturday, Nov 22: Once again, 9 players with Tomcat waiting for a partner. First game was Tommygun/Ski sending Lite/Knife down and next game was Pro/Tricky over Killer/Big John with a four ball run. Lite/Knife beat Killer/John with a two ball run plus a good bank. Pro/Tricky won against Ski/Tommy with a small run to advance. Lite/Knife won three good games to finally get the unbeaten Pro/Tricky in their sight again. Then they beat Pro/Tricky with a small run and a 22 Deadline: Friday, Dec 12 @ 4:[email protected] setup to take honors today. Congratulations Lite/Knife. You came from behind like true champs! 9-Ball, Tuesday, Nov 25: Again we had nine players with Ski waiting for a partner. First game, T-man/Lite beat Killer/Tomcat with a lucky bank. Next game, Big John/Pro scratched on the 9-ball giving a setup to Tommygun/Dandy Don. Then Big John/Pro lost to Killer/Tomcat and John became Ski’s partner on the coin toss. T-man/Lite proceeded to beat Ski/Big John with a setup combo and Tommy/Dandy advanced to the finals with a long cut against T-man/Lite. Lower level Killer/Tomcat beat all comers, but lost in one game to Tommy/Dandy with a setup combo. Congratulations Tommygun/ Dandy Don! 9-Ball, Tuesday, Nov 29: With 8 players we played singles. First game, T-man made an inadvertent 8-ball giving the game to Pro and Tommygun made a long shot to beat Ski. Big John beat Tomcat with a small run and Miller Lite beat Dandy Don with a three ball run. Tommygun then beat Pro badly with good shooting and Lite beat Big John, but then made the 8-ball at the wrong time allowing Tommy to advance to the finals. T-man looked good in the lower level for three games but then met Lite who wanted to get back to Tommy. The last two games were very good with Lite outshooting and finally winning the tournament. Congratulations Miller Lite! 23 Deadline: Friday, Dec 12 @ 4:[email protected]
