JANUARY 2017 Travel to El Salvador

JANUARY 2017
Travel to El Salvador
Since 1997 Edgewood College, in collaboration with
the Madison Arcatao Sister City Project (MASCP),
has offered this 2-semester seminar on the history,
politics and culture of El Salvador today, centered
around a Spring visit El Salvador, especially to
Madison’s sister city of Arcatao.
Why El Salvador?
Hiking, eco-tourism, beaches on the Pacific ocean,
beautiful scenery; museums, schools and universities,
hospitals and clinics; community radio; the social
movement; popular educators; micro-enterprises;
cathedrals and churches; colonial towns and thriving
metropolis: the Edgewood College/study tour to El
Salvador offers a range of experiences. From the
capital of San Salvador to Madison’s Sister City of
Arcatao on the Honduras border, you’ll learn about the
history and culture of El Salvador from a variety of
perspectives through leaders in the social movement:
from liberation theologians to former refugees from
the Salvadoran civil war.
It's hard to understand a place like El Salvador before
you go. You hear of the gangs, the long war, the
refugees. You don't see the broad valleys, the sudden
volcanoes, the black-sand beaches, the stories told
with a laugh, the people who tell them. Like a colonial
church, bright blue, battered by earthquakes, El
Salvador is still standing.

Winterim travel to El Salvador *
* Enrollment in both the Fall and Spring
courses is a prerequisite for travel.
Travel Dates (provisional)
Friday January 6th -Wednesday, January 18th , 2017
The aim of the course is to increase
awareness about El Salvador today, U.S.-Central
America relations, the plight of
underdevelopment and poverty that afflicts the
country, the situation of the rural poor and, in
particular, the importance of solidarity and
sistering as a tool for education and international
cooperation. We look at the country from a
variety of perspectives, and all students can find
an approach to match their interests.
Knowledge of Spanish is not a
requirement. The course is
taught in English and features a
variety of guest lecturers,
cultural activities, readings,
videos, and student
presentations. While the course
is a great fit for students of
Spanish, with abundant
opportunities to practice the
language, it is also relevant to a
broad cross-section of majors in
Social Sciences, Humanities,
Nursing, Education and
Business. Indeed, anyone can
benefit from this
interdisciplinary learning
opportunity.
The course is taught by Ian Davies
(Edgewood Spanish), Marc
Rosenthal (Edgewood COR
program).
Ian has taught at Edgewood since 1995 and has
travelled with students many times to El Salvador.
Beyond his obvious interest in Spanish language, he
has a particular interest in the intersections of history,
culture and politics in Latin America.
Marc is an adjunct faculty member at Edgewood and an
professional nurse with UW Health. As a longtime
activist in the Madison community, Marc brings a
wealth of experience and knowledge on Central
American issues and U.S. foreign policy, in addition to
his extensive background in health care.
