M.H. Mathisen started Eaz-Lift Spring Corporation in 1952
in a two car garage in North Hollywood, California.
Mr. Mathisen retired from Universal Studios in 1946 and
began trailering around America. The hitch he was using at
the time was bothersome and hampered his enjoyment of
the experience. An inventor and an experienced blacksmith,
he solved his hitch troubles by inventing the Eaz-Lift Weight
Distribution Hitch and patents were issued in May, 1952.
In 1953, Mathisen’s son, Ray, joined him in the small
garage where their first run of 56 hitches was completed.
They sold out immediately. Their next run of 350 units
required a move to a larger facility on Chandler Boulevard
where Eaz Lift remained until 1956. The demand for Eaz-Lift hitches
continued to outpace the inventory, so late in 1955, 5500 square
feet of heavy manufacturing space was purchased with enough land
available to expand to 55,000 square feet in Sun Valley, California.
With the proliferation of RVing in the US, the need for a well-built,
strongly engineered trailer hitch became the driving force for Eaz-Lift.
Production increased and the company continued to grow rapidly.
The introduction in 1960 of self-contained trailers, dual axles and
larger units sparked the invention of the Eaz-Lift Sway Control to
reduce fishtailing and trailer sway. After one and a half years of
development, the Eaz-Lift Sway Control was introduced and became
the company’s second success story.
By 1966, the Sun Valley,
California plant had run out of
space, so a second facility was
opened in Elkhart, Indiana.
The London, Ontario operation
became part of the Eaz-Lift
family in 1969 where the
manufacture of the original
Eaz-Lift weight distributing hitch
continues to this day. Continual
process and engineering
improvements are a hallmark
of the company, and Eaz-Lift
hitches and sway controls
enjoy a huge following among those who appreciate unfailing
quality and ease of use.
Today Eaz-Lift has become one of the largest weight distributing
hitch manufacturers in the world. In early 2007, Camco
Manufacturing purchased Eaz-Lift’s operations and consolidated
manufacturing to the London, Ontario plant. Founded in 1968,
Camco ships Eaz-Lift hitches from London, Ontario, Greensboro,
North Carolina, Portland, Oregon and Elkhart, Indiana.
If you asked Eaz-Lift founder M.H. Mathisen what the key to his
success was, he'd say, ‘My wife, my son, and my products…all of
which I have personally grown with, nurtured and loved.' That same
dedication to quality and pursuit of engineering excellence continues
today with both Eaz-Lift and Camco, just as it has for decades.

Hitch balls are made of solid, machined steel—chromeor zinc-plated. To choose the correct hitch ball for your
towing need, check the inside of your coupler and the

Reversible ball mounts
Ball mounts come in popular sizes, 2" x 2", 1-1/4" x 1-1/4", and are used to convert a receiver from a weight distributing to a weight
carrying hitch. Ball mounts create a ball platform for attaching a hitch ball. The ball mounts or utility hitch bar length are determined by
measuring from the center of the pull pin the to the center of the hitch ball hole. The drop or rise is determined by measuring from the
top of the mount to the top of the tongue. (See ball mount selection chart) All 2" x 2" ball mount shank holes are 1", except 48280 and
48282, which have a 3/4" hole. (POWDER COAT BAKED ON FINISH)

Rated at 5,000 lbs GVW for towing pick-ups, cars and multi-purpose vehicles.
Designed and constructed for universal fit, with adjustable arms that extend
from 26" to 41". The Tow Bar comes with all zinc-plated hardware. The quick
disconnect pull pins allow for easy removal and the collapsing side arms afford
trunk storage. This product is fully tested to SAE and V-5 criteria. A 2" ball is
required. Safety chain loops are electrically welded to side arms to achieve
simple chain attachment. The Tow Bar is boxed, completely assembled. UPS
shippable at 31 lbs.

1. What advantage does the trunnion style “Ultra Hitch” have over the
traditional bent bar “Elite Hitch”?
The Ultra trunnion style weight distributing hitch allows for greater ground clearance­­—up to
3.5". It is a fully lubricated trunnion system which encloses the grease and eliminates the need
to apply grease directly to the spring bar. In addition, the installation and removal of the
spring bar is much more user friendly. This is a great system for anyone who enjoys ease of
use and high performance products.
2. When and why should I use a weight distributing hitch?
A weight distributing hitch should be used when a trailer and tow vehicle are not sitting level
when connected to one another. Weight distributing hitches equalize the weight between the
axle of the trailer, the connection point between trailer and vehicle and the rear axle of the
vehicle. This provides the driver with a safe, stable and smooth towing ride.
3. What size trailer hitch do I need?
Determining The Correct Weight Carrying Hitch:
•Determine the tongue weight of the trailer. Tongue Weight includes the trailer tongue weight
with full gas, water waste systems and packed trailer.
•Select a hitch with a maximum Tongue Weight greater than the trailer tongue weight. For
example, if the trailer tongue weight is 275 lbs., install a frame hitch or a receiver. Do not
exceed vehicle manufacturer’s recommended capacities.
Determining The Correct Weight Distributing Hitch:
•Determine the tongue weight of the trailer. Tongue Weight includes the trailer tongue weight
with full gas, water, waste systems and a packed trailer.
•Estimate the car trunk load. (includes all items carried in the back of the vehicle).
•Match the sum of these weights to the proper EAZ-LIFT® Hitch. For example, a tongue
weight of 500 lbs., coupled with a car trunk load of 200 lbs., equates total hitch weight of
700 lbs.
•From the Guide, the "example" vehicle-trailer combination would require a 750 Weight Distributing Hitch.
•Make sure the tongue weight and the gross trailer weight do not exceed the tow vehicle
manufacturer’s recommended capacities.
•The hitch selected must have a maximum Gross Trailer Weight rating equal to or greater
than, the trailer rating.
•Tongue weight should be at least 10% of gross trailer weight.
4. How tight should I screw in the bolts on the hook-up brackets?
The hook-up brackets should be secured to the frame of the trailer by tightening finger tight
with an additional quarter turn by use of a wrench. This will allow the hook-up brackets
to move in the situation of extreme and excessive pressure. With all installation issues it is
recommended to follow the installation instructions provided with each trailer hitch.
5. Do I have to use a Sway Control?
Our Sway Control Bars reduce the amount of trailer sway caused by natural wind, passing
vehicles and winding roads. Sway makes steering uncomfortable and tiring for the driver and
in severe cases, can create dangerous conditions when steering becomes hard to control. By
reducing sway, your RV steering is easier, safer and the ride is smoother. Check with your RV
Dealer on advice regarding sway control for your specific set up of tow vehicle and trailer.
