CourseDescription:
Inthemidstofthedigitaldisruptionofthepasttwodecades,manyjournalists–whetherat
newspapersoratthepanoplyofdigitalvenuescapturedundertherubricof“newsmedia”–
arebecomingunmooredfromthejournalisticnormsofthepast.Theadvertisingbudgetsof
newspapershavebeengutted.TheInternet,socialplatforms,andmobiledeviceshave
transformedhownewsisconsumedandshared.Theindustryisendeavoringtofindnewways
ofsupportingethicalandprofessionaljournalism.Andintheprocess,journalistsarestruggling
tokeeptheirfootingastheyattempttoredefinetheirnewsethicforanewera.Thisupheaval
hasalsohadamajorimpactontheconsumersofnewswhohaveflednewspapersindroves
andhavebecomehunter-gatherersofnewsinadigitalrealmwherethefidelitytothefactsis
oftenabitsketchy.Indeed,Iwouldarguethatinthedigitaleraofonlinenewsthereexistsan
unprecedentedstrugglebetweentheconstraintsofthemarketandthemissionofjournalismto
presentthetruth–topresentthemostaccuraterepresentationofrealityjournalistically
possibleuntaintedbythedemandsofprofit.Thatisthethreadthatrunsthroughthisclassand
itisathemethatshouldbealwaysatthebackofyourmind.
Thus,thisJournalismStudiesclasswillbeginbybrieflyexploringjournalismhistory–andnot
becauseIamahistorianbutbecausehistorygivesusafoundationtounderstandthecontextof
thepresent.Thenwewillconcernourselveswithsuchissuesascontemporarynews
consumption;newsonomics;socialmediaandjournalismandtheriseoftheFifthEstate;the
dodgynotionofjournalisticobjectivity;theverificationofthetruthinthepresentation–and
construction–ofreality;ethicsandthequestionwhetherjournalismis“morallyindefensible”;
ethicsandtheconstraintsontruthbymarket,ideological,andtechnologicalforcessuchas
advertising,theriseofsponsored(native)ads,andthefilterbubble;journalismandpublic
relations;and,finally,thefutureofjournalism.
CourseGoals:
Hereismyhopeforthiscourse:Thatitwillhelpyoubecomeknowledgeableandliterateabout
journalism/thenewsmediaandthemedia(andnoticeImakeadistinctionhere).Thatitwill
helpyou:
1. Becomeeducated–andalert–consumersofjournalismandmedia.
2. Honeyourcriticalthinkingskillsto(1)distinguishbetweenevidenceandbeliefand(2)make
connectionsacrossseeminglydisparateeventsandcontrarycontentions.
3. Becomeknowledgeablemediaindustryresearchers.Asolidunderstandingabouthow
journalismandthemediaworkandinfluencesocietywillholdyouingoodsteadin
whatevercareerfieldyouenter.Thiscoursewillalsohelpthosepursuingadvanceddegrees
tobeginunderstandingresearchmethods.
4. Learnabouttheconnectionsbetweenthemediaandeconomicsinthechangingworldof
mediaandmedia-businessmodels.
5. Tounderstandthevitalfunctionofjournalistsinademocraticsociety,andhowthatrole
hasdeveloped.Oneproblemhereinthedigitalageishowdoyoudefineajournalist?
6. Understandtheethicalnormsthatarethefundamentofjournalismandhowthedisruption
ofthedigitalageisshakingthatfoundation.
7. Tounderstandhowthejournalismbusinessmodelisevolving
