Thus,thisJournalismStudiesclasswillbeginbybrieflyexploringjournalismhistory–andnot becauseIamahistorianbutbecausehistorygivesusafoundationtounderstandthecontextof thepresent.Thenwewillconcernourselveswithsuchissuesascontemporarynews consumption;newsonomics;socialmediaandjournalismandtheriseoftheFifthEstate;the dodgynotionofjournalisticobjectivity;theverificationofthetruthinthepresentation–and construction–ofreality;ethicsandthequestionwhetherjournalismis“morallyindefensible”; ethicsandtheconstraintsontruthbymarket,ideological,andtechnologicalforcessuchas advertising,theriseofsponsored(native)ads,andthefilterbubble;journalismandpublic relations;and,finally,thefutureofjournalism.
