Scheduled Neighbourhood Leaf Collection There are two deadlines for Neighbourhood Collection this year: First Deadline Second Deadline James Bay, Fairfield, Rockland, Gonzales October 16 December 12 Adopt a Storm Drain Grate Oaklands, Fernwood, North Jubilee, South Jubilee November 7 December 19 To prevent flooding, please help us keep storm drain grates clear. Sweep leaves and tree needles away from grates to allow rain water to enter freely, and avoid water backups on streets and into properties. To report a blocked grate, please call our 24-hour line at 250.361.0400. Victoria West, Burnside Gorge, Hillside Quadra, North Park, Harris Green, Downtown November 28 December 26 • Locate your neighbourhood on the map and note the deadlines for having your leaves ready. • Place your leaves on the boulevard in loose piles, secured by wire mesh rings, or in tied, clear, 100% compostable bags. There is no limit to the number of bags or piles you can set out. • City trucks make one pass down each street at each deadline. • The schedule is based on the common tree species and their expected leaf-drop in each neighbourhood, and consideration for neighbourhoods prone to flooding. • You can also drop bagged leaves off at the Public Works Yard on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. For More Information 2. Frequently Asked Questions Why Bag Leaves? Placing leaves in clear, 100% compostable bags helps prevent flooding by keeping gutters, streets, sidewalks and storm drain grates clear of leaves. • There is no limit to the number of leaf piles or bags per household. • The City sells clear, 100% compostable bags at City Hall and Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre. A 10-pack costs $12.50 plus tax. • Bags can also be purchased at local retailers. Look for compostable bags marked ASTM #D6400 or EN13432. Bags should be no larger than 107cm x 127cm. • Protect your grass by bagging your leaves and placing leaves out approximately one week before scheduled collection. • To prevent flooding, please help keep storm drain grates clear. How is the schedule determined? • The City collects leaves from parks, sports fields, medians, parking lots, tennis courts and streets first. • Residential areas are next. Neighbourhoods with early leaf drop and those prone to flooding are given top priority. How are residential leaves collected and reused? Loose and bagged leaves are transported to the Beacon Hill Park Maintenance Yard for composting and reuse in City gardens. Can I compost my leaves instead? Absolutely. Mulched leaves are a valuable source of nutrients for potted plants, flowers, shrubs and trees. For more information on backyard composting contact the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre at 250.386.9676 or visit compost.bc.ca Leaf and Garden Waste Drop-off Victoria residents can drop off garden waste for free, yearround at the City of Victoria Public Works Yard, 417 Garbally Road on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proof of residency required through a valid driver’s licence or a City of Victoria utility bill that indicates kitchen scraps and garbage service. Accepted: leaves, branches, vines, grass Not accepted: rocks, sod, soil, stumps, or branches greater than 1.8 metres (6 feet) in length or 50 millimetres (2 inches) in diameter • Weather and timing of leaf drop determine how quickly the City can collect leaves.
