Pores are microscopic channels embedded within the skin’s tissue, which serve as an
outlet for excretion of bodily fluids (such as perspiration or oil), and growth of hair. Our
body is comprised of over 4 million of these tiny openings, with an estimated 20,000
on the human face.
There are two primary types of pores on the human body:
•E
ccrine pores regulate body temperature by perspiring (sweating). These pores are
present on most of the skin’s surface (with dominance on palms, soles, forehead,
arm pits and groin). Eccrine pores are not visible to the unaided human eye, and
can only be seen during active perspiration.
•S
ebaceous pores are tiny visible openings containing oil-producing sacs called the
sebaceous glands. These glands produce an oily substance called sebum, which
helps lubricate hair and soften skin tissue. Visible pores are often accompanied by
a hair follicle, and are predominately located on the face, scalp, back, chest and
groin regions.

Dilated pores can affect both men and women of all ages and are the result of two
main causes: aging and excess sebum. Both causes are affected by many internal and
external factors, including genetics, hormonal fluctuations, psychological stress, and
environmental exposure.
•P
ores slacken with Aging
With aging, visible pores have a tendency to become stretched and elongated
[See Figure 2 - Pictorial of Young vs. Aged Skin showing slackened pores and dermal
compression]. This is caused by a weakening of the surrounding and supporting
tissue in the dermis, which allows pore walls to become slackened. Accumulated sun
exposure leads to degradation of collagen and elastin in the skin’s inner layers. It is
estimated that for every 10 years of life beyond the age of 20, the dermis becomes
6% thinner, and is 3% less elastic.
•E
xcess Sebum Production increases Pore Size:
In addition to the effects of aging, excess sebum production (known as seborrhea)
also increases pore size. Sebum is a complex mixture of natural oily/waxy substances
which lubricate and waterproof our skin. Our sebaceous glands are influenced
by adolescence, hormonal fluctuations, psychological stress, sun exposure and
variations in humidity. Under elevated temperatures, sebum has a tendency to form a
more uniform film with sweat on our skin. Suppression of sebum through inhibition of
internal triggers can reduce pore size and output.

Build-up of surface debris and dead skin cells can also enhance the appearance
of pores, by creating a rugged uneven canvas on the outermost layer of the skin
(stratum corneum). New skin cells are born at the base of the epidermis and slowly
move upward, losing moisture and flattening out as they rise until they form a barrier
at the top of the epidermis. Regeneration begins in the deep subsurface layers of the
epidermis; which serves as the factory for creation of new skin cells. Millions of cells
are born daily, which gradually migrate and transition to the upper, outermost dead
layer of the skin. With aging, this process of migration and cellular renewal slows from
approximately two to four weeks, and skin’s surface—including pore openings—can
appear more unevenly textured.

3. IN THE WALL LINING
Anti-oxidant rich Lentil Seed Extract counters the hollowing effect in the wall lining
of the pore.
Through extensive dermatological research, our ARTISTRY™ scientists uncovered a new
finding associated with enlarged pores. With aging, an imbalance in cellular growth exists
within the pore walls when compared to the surrounding tissue: cells within the walls of the
pore hyperactively multiply due to an elevated insulin growth factor. Simply put, when cells
replicate more rapidly inside of the pore versus outside of the pore, an undesirable build-up
of cells and surface debris collects in the pore (the funnel region). This can be visibly
perceived as a “hollowing” effect of the pores.

4. AT THE CORE OF THE PORE
The “hero” of the Refinishing Complex: Patent-Pending Java Tea Extract helps suppress
excess sebum production, down to the core of the pore.
Visible pores contain oil-producing sebaceous glands, which are located in the skin’s
dermis. Dermatological research indicates that excessive oil production is directly
associated with enlarged pores. The Refinishing Complex features Java tea extract, which
was clinically tested to help suppress excess sebum while significantly reducing visible
pore size and imperfections. Harvested in the islands of Indonesia, Java tea is very rich in
numerous antioxidant molecules (such as polyphenols, triterpenes and sinesetine). Unlike
many cosmetic ingredients which provide temporary absorption and astringency to oil, Java

5. OUTSIDE OF THE PORE
Star Fruit Extract reinforces the outside area of the pore’s structure to reduce
slackening, visibly tightening pores for an even skin texture.
IIn the subsurface layers of the skin, degradation due to photoaging weakens the tissue
surrounding pores leading to visible slackening and dilation. Pores become stretched
and enlarged. Star Fruit Leaf extract, in conjunction with the Refinishing Complex, helps
