I.CourseDescription:
Definitionofservice-learning:“Service-learningisaformofexperientialeducationinwhichstudents
engageinactivitiesthataddresshumanandcommunityneedstogetherwithstructuredopportunitiesfor
reflectiondesignedtoachievedesiredlearningoutcomes.”(B.Jacoby,Service-learninginHigher
Education,1996)
Communityandcampuspartnersprovideon-sitesupervisiontostudents.Partnersitesvary,asdothe
service-learningprojectsavailable.Thiscoursehasnoprerequisites.Thegoalofthiscourseisto
introducestudentstoservice-learningandtheacademicimpactofcivicengagement.
Thebasicresponsibilitiesofthestudent,instructor,andservice-Learningcommunitypartneragencyare
outlinedbelow.
Thestudentwill:
1. Completethetotalrequiredservicehoursinaprofessionalworksetting,usingiServetotrack
theirservice.
2. CompleteaService-LearningContract,whichdetailstheplacementsettingandhis/her
responsibilitieswithinthatsetting,aswellasaplantoconnectthestudent’sservicetocourse
outcomes,andsubmitrevisionstothisformiftheplacementdetailschange.
3. Communicateeffectivelyandregularlywiththeirinstructorandcommunitypartnerthroughout
theplacement.
4. Completeallrequiredservicehours,serviceactivities,guidedreflectionentries,academic
coursework,andfinalprojectrequirements.
5. EnsurethatthecommunitypartnerhascompletedandsubmittedtheService-Learning
Evaluationtotheinstructorbytheduedate.
6. Attendassignedclassmeetingsasdeterminedbytheinstructor.
Theinstructorwill:
1. Assistthestudentinchoosing/developingaservice-learningprojectandplacementdetails.
2. Serveasaliaisonbetweenthestudentandthecommunitypartner,providingguidance,
continuoussupport,andmediationwhenneeded.
3. Supervisethestudent’sacademicworkandprovidefeedbackandgradingaswellas
communicatewithpartnerstoevaluateon-siteworkand/orprojectoutcomes.
4. Facilitatereflectionactivities,classmeetings,orcommunitypartnermeetingswhenneeded.
Theservice-learningpartnerwill:
1. Developascheduleofhoursandassignedtasks/activities(withtheneedsoftheagencyandthe
studentreceivingmutualbenefit)thatprovidethestudentwithaplanforsuccessfulcompletion
oftheirrequiredservicehoursandprojectgoals.
2. Assignasupervisortoparticipateinthestudent’slearningexperience,monitortheirprogress,
andprovideguidanceandinaccordancewiththeintentoftheservice-learningexperience.The
supervisorwillalsocompleteformsrelatedtothestudent’splacementincluding(butnotlimited
to)theSLContractandSLEvaluation.
3. Contacttheinstructorforassistance,clarificationorconcerns,inatimelyandpro-activefashion
astofacilitatesuccessforthestudent,theassignedserviceproject,andtheagency.

II.ExpectedLearningOutcomes:
Asaresultofthiscourse,itisexpectedthatstudentswillbeableto:
1. Developfamiliaritywithanon-profitcommunity/campuspartner,itsmission,programs,and
peopleserved,puttingspecialemphasisonthesocialissues/problemsaddressedbythepartner.
2. Completeaservice-learningplacementthatincludesdirectservice(on-siteworkingdirectlywith
clients),indirectservice(workingon-site/off-siteonproject-basedoradministrativetasks),ora
combinationofboth.
3. Enhancepersonalstrategiesforproblemsolvingskillsbyapplyingacademictheoriesandthe
foundationexistingfrompastcoursesandacademicexperience,aswellaslearningopportunities
presentedduringtheserviceplacement.
4. Demonstratecriticalthinkingthroughunderstandingdevelopedduringservice,includingthe
identification,framing,resolving,andreaddressingofsocialissuesorproblems.
5. Identifyhowatleastthree(3)theoriesorconceptsfromyourmajor/minorareaofstudyhave
contributedtoyourunderstandingabouttheserviceplacementyoucompletedandsocial
issues/problemsfacingthecommunityinwhichyouserved.
6. Demonstrateconnectiontoacademicstudy,lessonslearned,andinterpersonalvalueof
service-learningexperiencethroughdesignandpresentationofanElectronicProjectPortfolio
(EPP).

Forthisjournalentry,youwillneedtotakeatleast3photographsofyouengaginginyourservicelearningproject.Thefirstphotoshouldbeofyouinfrontoftheagency,theirsign,orsomethingunique
