The southern terminus of the Bruce Trail is located at the stone cairn in Queenston Heights Park. Near the famous Niagara Falls, the park is perched in the west side of a deep gorge carved over the centuries by the Niagara River. On the way through St. Catharines and Thorold, hikers will pass all four of the Welland Canals. Friends of Short Hills Park is a community-based organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and natural integrity of Short Hills Provincial Park through liaison with Ontario Parks, volunteer work, public education and fund raising activities. • • • • Open all year round. The trails system at Short Hills Park welcomes horseback riders, hikers and cyclists. The Sanctuary boasts one of Canada’s most exotic collections of flowering rhododendrons. The petting farm, which operates from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving weekend, houses a variety of farm animals including chickens, pigs, horses, rabbits, sheep and goats. Hundreds of ducks, geese and native birds live in the adjacent pond. The pond inlet is sheltered by evergreens and bordered by grassy banks and willow trees, offers food and shelter for the resident waterfowl and migratory birds. Since the acquisition of this property in 1974, the city has extended pathways to the lake, added a parking lot and bird feeders, and renovated the barn and pond area. Picnic and playground facilities were expanded to include a pavilion and washrooms. The park offers a unique opportunity to experience nature first hand.
