Bruce Trail
The Bruce Trail, 800 kilometers along the sometimes breathtaking and always interesting
Niagara Escarpment, is visited by more than 400,000 people a year. The southern terminus of
the Bruce Trail is located at the stone cairn in Queenston Heights Park. Near the famous
Niagara Falls, the park is perched in the west side of a deep gorge carved over the centuries by
the Niagara River. On the way through St. Catharines and Thorold, hikers will pass all four of
the Welland Canals. Niagara is recognized as Ontario's wine region and many parts of the
Bruce Trail in this section skirt past wineries.

Happy Rolph's Bird Sanctuary
Happy Rolph Bird Sanctuary is a 15.06-acre municipal park on the shores of Lake Ontario. The
Sanctuary boasts one of Canada’s most exotic collections of flowering rhododendrons. The
petting farm, which operates from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving weekend, houses a variety of
farm animals including chickens, pigs, horses, rabbits, sheep and goats. Hundreds of ducks,
geese and native birds live in the adjacent pond. The pond inlet is sheltered by evergreens and
bordered by grassy banks and willow trees, offers food and shelter for the resident waterfowl
and migratory birds. Since the acquisition of this property in 1974, the city has extended
pathways to the lake, added a parking lot and bird feeders, and renovated the barn and pond
area. Picnic and playground facilities were expanded to include a pavilion and washrooms. The
park offers a unique opportunity to experience nature first hand. There is also a picnic area
for lunches and snacks, as well as a playground area for kids.
