SPEECH OUTLINE REQUIREMENTS

SPEECH OUTLINE REQUIREMENTS
1. There are four sections to the outlines: (a) the introduction; (b) the body; (c) the conclusion; and (d)
the works cited.
2. Review the outline example to see how outlines are supposed to look.
3. All speech outline assignments will have the same format as the outline example.
4. Provide labels in the outline as shown in the outline example (i.e., attention-getting device, thesis,
preview of main points, transitions, review of main points, and closing device).
5. Use conventional outlining symbols. Roman numerals (i.e., I, II, III, etc.) come first, then capital letters
(i.e., A, B, C, etc.) come next, then numbers (i.e., 1, 2, 3, etc.).
6. Follow the principle of subordination. This means that if a new sub-section is created (such as subpoint
“A”), then you must have at least a second one (such as subpoint “B”). By definition, the moment you
“divide” a section into subpoints, you must have at least two of them.
7. Use proper indentation. Notice on the outline example how an indent is added for each sub-section.
Likewise, once a line has been indented, then all other lines pertaining to that section must also be
indented at the same location. This is known as a hanging indent.
8. Write in complete sentences. Do not use one or two words, phrases, or sentence fragments. A
sentence has a subject, a predicate, and punctuation.
9. Use only one sentence per symbol; do not write a paragraph next to a symbol. Refer to the outline
example to see how this should look.
10. Provide transitional statements throughout the outline as noted in the outline example.
11. Cite your sources in your outline to remind yourself where you will orally cite these sources when
giving your speech.
12. Provide a works cited page, following MLA format, at the end of your outline. You can get assistance in
how to cite sources in MLA format from the research link on Blackboard.
13. Do not put your works cited in a separate file as your outline. The outline should include the works
cited page as its last page.
14. Be sure you have followed the requirements of the speech outline assignment. For example, the
minimum number of sources is different for each speech assignment. Read and follow the directions
of each assignment. Do not just assume that the outline requirements are the same for each
assignment.
