Holiday Food Drive
Painter School and the Second Harvest Food Bank
are once again partnering to collect canned foods for
needy families. Staff and students have participated in
past years and have donated thousands of pounds of
canned goods! Our Food Drive will be December
2nd through December 16th. Please send your
nonperishable food items to your child’s classroom.
Recommended items are canned meals in a can
(stew, chili, and soup), fruit, vegetables, tuna, canned
meat, peanut butter, low sugar cereals, juice and
canned foods with pop-top lids. Meals in a box such
as macaroni and cheese, ravioli, pastas and rice are
also great contributions. In advance, we thank you for
all of your support.
Special Minimum Day
Monday, December 7th a district-wide meeting for
teachers has been scheduled for the later part of the
day. Therefore, all schools in the district will follow a
Super Minimum Day and the release time for our
students’ grades Kinder through 5th is as follows:
All Kinder:

Grades 4th & 5th

helped coordinate this event.

Winter Showcase
Alum Rock School District proudly presents its 2nd annual Visual
and Performing Arts performances and work by students
attending Joseph George Middle School and Linda Vista
Elementary. The Winter Showcase will feature art, dance, choir,
drums, mariachis, band and bells. This FREE event will take
place on Wednesday, December 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
at Joseph George Middle School located at 277 Mahoney Drive.
For more information call Dr. Colin J. Ford at 928-7807.
District Board Meetings
Regular Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 10,
2009. This meeting will be held at Pala School located in the
cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. The next regular board meeting is
scheduled for Thursday, January 14, 2010.
Book Donation
The Hoopoe Books/Share Literacy Program, thanks to a
generous donation from Kaiser Permanente and other Share
Literacy donors, will donate books to our kinder, first, second and
third grade students district-wide before the Winter Break.
This is a wonderful gift for our students. Many of these books are
bilingual and are beautifully illustrated. Students will be provided
high quality literature and the opportunity to explore folk stories
that depict regions not often represented in current literature –
Afghanistan, central Asia, Africa and the Middle East. They’ll
help our students appreciate the diversity of our world.
Distribution is scheduled for early afternoon on Friday, Dec. 18th
which is the last school day before our Break.
Classroom Christmas Parties
Should the individual teacher’s chose to have a Christmas party
we ask that parents send healthy snacks rather than the
traditional candies and sweets to school.
School Site Council (S.S.C.)/ELAC

American Legion
Word for the Week
Affluent (af-loo-uhnt) adjective. What it means is
having plenty of money; rich, wealthy. Example: I like to
see the mansions in the affluent part of town.
Learning to spell helps your child be a better reader and
writer and here are a few suggestions:
•
•
Help your child plan a different study routine for
each weekday. Example: quiz him/her while at
the playground. Toss magnetic letters in a
cookie tin so he/she can spell words on the way
to sport practice.
Create homemade spelling supplies. Collect
colorful bingo chips or bottle caps. Your child
can write the letters of the alphabet on them
wit\h a permanent marker then arrange them to
spell words.
Enjoy the moment and take time to work with your child.
Your commitment and support in the development of
your child’s education will help him/her fulfill their life
long goals.
Painter School extends a special thank you to the American
Legion for their generosity in donating to several of our families
during Thanksgiving.
