one question (?)
Another example of a compromise in U.S.
history is
-
-
The Great Compromise which is
an agreement between the
delegates. It states that the
American government would
have two houses in Congress: the
Senate where each state has two
Senators and the House of
Representatives where each state
has a number of Representatives
based on population.
It’s basically the collaboration of
the Virginia Plan and the
Kentucky Plan.
Prediction – I think that the Missouri
Compromise will cause sectionalism because
the free state and the slave state are two
separate ideas from different perspectives
and some might not be able to accept the
other side’s opinion.

Definition:
An agreement that allows Missouri to enter the Union as a
slave state and Maine to enter as a free state and outlawed
slavery in any territories or states.
Uproar over the Missouri Te rritory applying to be a
state:
If Missouri became a slave state, the amount of free states
and slave states would be unfair. People would argue that
there is one more slave state than a free state so they needed
the Missouri Compromise to settle the complaint.
This event was called a compromise because….
It worked out an argument. There were 11 free states and 11
slave states. Then Missouri came in and made it 12 slave
states and 11 free states. The Missouri Compromise added
another state, which is Maine, to be a free state. By doing
this, the balance between the number of free states and slave
states stayed stable.
The North gained another free state (Maine) but
Agreement – The Missouri Compromise
does make things fair between the slave and
the free states.
Disagreement – I don’t see how the
compromise can prevent the slave trade
though.
gave up the goal of not having any ne w slave states
The South gained another slave state (Missouri)
but gave up the goal of having all ne w slave states
Question – If the government cared enough
to make a Missouri Compromise to even out
the free states and the slave states, why don’t
they declare a law that says having slaves at
all is illegal?
Importance of this event:
The Missouri Compromise made Missouri a slave state and added Maine as the free state to balance out the
order of the states which ended the argument between both sides.
What is the role of compromise in a self- governing society, considering that many convictions are deeply held
but not shared by everyone in the community? Is some level of compromise necessary to the survival of a
democratic republic?
-
The role of compromise is to make everyone happy because if nobody gets what they want, then
everyone isn’t satisfied with the current society. Some level of compromise is necessary to the
survival of a democratic republic because if everyone doesn’t agree on a representative or any
representatives at all, then there would be a problem. They have the power to vote and they have a
huge say in a democratic republic. If they refuse to agree on who to vote it could cause a corruption
among the government.
