Apostrophe-Contractions
-Contractions are two words that have
been joined together. The apostrophe
is used to show the missing letters.
-Remember when two words are
joined together, the apostrophe should
point to the missing letter-like an
arrow.
6
Homophones
-a homophone is a
word that is
pronounced the

word, but differs
in meaning:

Dictations for spelling tests:
Week 1
They watched a surveillance tape that showed a dog obey its master. The dog was grey and did not chase his prey. They had to continue to watch the tape to decide if the
dog could convey promise for a house pet. The class survey showed that a dog does not need reins.
Week 2
I can lift an eight pound weight straight over my head. Sometimes it makes me feel faint and my brain hurts for a minute, but you will never hear a complaint. When I
take a break I think about catching a freight train to the island of relaxation.
Week 3
The frogs came to earth and entered the school. I could not believe my eyes. I wanted to cry and deny when I saw them multiply. It is difficult to believe, but it is not a lie.
We will be lucky to survive unless they divide like a piece of pie.
Week 4
The girl didn’t do as she was told. She wouldn’t cut the grass and I wasn’t impressed. She could’ve done it with enough time to spare, but couldn’t consider anything
except for playing games. I’d hope that she sees the error in her ways.
Week 5
Aren’t you glad that this isn’t about complex sentences. Although I won’t make you write anymore right now, we will continue in a minute. As we haven’t got much time, I
shouldn’t take can’t for an answer. If you’re not done, you should’ve started earlier.
Week 6
The male who delivers my mail is six feet tall with fare hair. He is allowed to build houses, but I don’t like when I’m billed for the work. It makes me shout aloud and I find
it difficult to follow through and pay enough for the work. I was so upset and I thought it was not fair.

1) Look at the word and count the number of letters and syllables.
2) Identify the part (s) of the word that is (are) tricky – circle, underline or highlight.
3) Devise a strategy to help learn the word: use a mnemonic (eg Dogs Often Eat Sausages – DOES), look at the word shape - is there a recognisable pattern of ascenders and decenders
like in the word elephant, look at the way the word is built up from prefixes, roots & suffixes ( un –comfort –able or trans – port - ed ) or use a visual cue e.g.
letter ‘i’ is a person and the ‘r’ is a signpost to over there.
4) Every day, look at the word, say it, then cover, write and check it.
5) Write each word in a complete sentence.
