Language Assistant Profile: Christopher Troy
Hello everybody,
My name is Chris Troy and I am from Ithaca, New York. I’ve always lived in Ithaca, but for two
years in high school and four years in college. For high school, I graduated from a boarding school
called The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, which is close to Philadelphia. For college I
stayed much closer to home. This past May I graduated from Hobart College located only an hour
away from my home.
In college I studied Spanish and Hispanic Studies and Chemistry. Those might seem completely
unrelated and, for the most part, they are. It was a bit of an interesting time trying to navigate
such distinct subjects, but look where it has led me. In fact, the majority of my teaching
experience (and enjoyment) comes from my tutoring younger students in Chemistry, while my
urge to travel (the “travel bug”) was refined after spending 3 months in Seville, Spain as part of a
semester abroad. In a way, my motivation for teaching abroad is a product of both my Chemistry
and my Spanish interests. My hope for after my year in Argentina is to return to the US and
attend medical school, so if anybody has any questions or interest in that area please don’t
hesitate to ask.
These past few months I have been working for Hobart College. It has been a lot of fun, and it will
be sad to leave. But writing this profile in January in the middle of New York, I can’t help but wish
for warmer weather. It is exciting to know that even though I’m leaving home, I’m going to
Argentina to start a new chapter, shared with all of you.
I fancy myself an amateur (very amateur) fly fisherman and I have also picked up skiing again
over the past few years. If I’m not mistaken, Argentina is pretty well known for both. I’ve also
played ice hockey since I was 3 years old, which is a little hard to believe now that I’m 22. There
are many other things I enjoy doing outside of the classroom and, of course, I am always open to
try new things.
On that note, I’ve never been to Argentina, or any part of South America for that matter. I am
really looking forward to exploring a part of the world that I’ve only seen in photographs,
meeting all of you and being able to call Buenos Aires home.
How exciting this will be.
See you all soon,
Chris
