The Geographical Society of New South Wales Study Tour to
West Africa
Study Tour to West Africa
with Stephen Codrington
31 days - 31 nights
WEST AFRICA: Ghana - Togo - Benin - Niger - Burkina Faso - Mali
West Africa is one of the last great inhabited regions of the world that remains largely unexplored by
outsiders. It is an area where traditional cultures remain essentially intact in the context of their
spectacular landscapes despite a long history of foreign, including colonial, influences. With its
astonishing diversity of cultures, wildlife, natural environments and urban development, visiting West
Africa represents an “authentic African” experience that is unobtainable elsewhere.
This tour will be led by Dr Stephen Codrington on behalf of the Geographical Society of New South
Wales. Stephen has studied this area in the field on several occasions, and he completed a “dummy
run” of the itinerary in January 2014 to obtain up-to-date information on the places, the transport
and the accommodation arrangements.
After flying from Australia to West Africa, this study tour will examine the
diversity of West Africa by visiting six fascinating countries via an
overland journey that will begin in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and
finish in Bamako, the capital of Mali. On its way from Ghana to
Mali, the group will visit many exquisite and rarely seen places
in Togo, Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso.
Highlights of the study tour will include:
In Ghana: Kumasi and Ashante villages, Cape Coast and Elmina
on the old Slave Coast, and Accra.
In Togo: Lomé, the capital city, and Togoville.
In Benin: Abomey, Cotonou, and Ouidah, the birthplace of voodoo.
In Niger: Niamey, with an excursion to see the endangered miniature wild giraffes.
In Burkina Faso: Bobo Dioulasso, Banfora, Tiébélé and Ouagadougou.
In Mali: Bamako, Mopti, Djenné and Dogon villages; sunset boat trip to various villages along the
Niger River.

Cape Coast Castle (UNESCO World Heritage
site), former bastion of the Atlantic slave trade,
with three large slave dungeons accessible only from
the seaward side of the fort, and the Door of no Return. The museum has
a compelling series of exhibits showing the origins and workings of the
slave trade, and the scope of the resulting human diaspora. Return to
Elmina for overnight at the Elmina Beach Resort (or similar) [B]
Fri 2 Jan: Today we will drive to and visit Kakum National Park, a
rainforest preserve inhabited by some 100 different species of mammals,

is known for its practice of voodoo, and we will see many voodoo
shrines for male and female spirits. We will visit the Royal Palace of Chief
Mlapa V and the royal museum, documenting the history of the royal family.
The Togoville Cathedral was built in 1910. There is also a shrine to the Virgin
Mary to mark where she is said to have appeared on 7 November 1973. Pope John Paul II
visited the shrine in August 1985, and during the visit the Pope is said to have
prayed for the first time with animists and paid homage to a sacred snakes. We return to Lomé for overnight at the Hotel Ibis Centre (or similar). [B]

stilts over the lagoon waters of Lake Nokoue. This village was created in the
18th century by the Tofinu people to escape the slave raids of their
neighbours. Women sell fish, fruits and vegetables from their canoes, and
fish farming is practiced within enclosures of trees and branches that
surround the village. Return to Cotonou for overnight at the Hotel du

Grand Mosque with its massive minaret and tiled dome. Overnight in Niamey at the
Grand Hotel (or similar). [B]
Wed 14 Jan: Drive through the Sahel, crossing the border into Burkina
Faso and proceeding to its capital city, Ouagadougou for overnight at the

batik fabrics, wooden statues and masks, jewelry, leatherwork and bronze
castings. We will also visit the Music Museum if it has reopened. Afternoon
excursion to Tiébélé village in Gourounsi country, where we will visit the Royal
Court of Tiébélé, and see the interesting fortress-like houses of the Kassena people. The houses are of
various shapes and sizes depending on the status of the occupants, and they are beautifully decorated with
geometric patterns on the walls. They are constructed of mud and feature flat roofs for sleeping in the hot
weather; the houses are painted by the women, with local red, blue, white and black pigments. Return to

potters, and dyers at work. In the afternoon, we take an excursion to
the Banfora region to see the Pics de Sindou, and perhaps Lake
Tengréla. Return to Bobo Dioulasso for overnight at the Hotel
Auberge (or similar). [B]
Sun 18 Jan: All day drive to Djenné in Mali, obtaining the Mali entry visa
at the border. Overnight at the Hotel Djenné Djenno (or similar). [B]
Mon 19 Jan: Morning inspection of Djenné, the ancient sister-city of
Timbuktu, on its colorful weekly market day. Djenné was one of the first
commercial centres of the Sahel region, being the meeting place of the
Saharan nomads, the local farmers and cattle herders, and the fishermen
from the inland delta of the Niger. After exploring the market, we will
stroll the ancient alleys and narrow streets, and see the oldest house in
Djenné, dating from the 12th century. We will also see the magnificent
Great Mosque, the world’s largest mud brick building, originally
constructed in the 13th century, another of UNESCO’s World Heritage
sites. In the afternoon, we will drive to Dogon country, with an overnight
stay in Bandiagara at the Hotel Falaise (or similar). [B]
Tue 20 Jan: We begin exploring Mali’s magnificent
Dogon country. The Dogon tribe originated in the south of Mali, but they
fled from there to preserve their animist religion from the spread of
Islam. When they arrived at the Bandiagara cliffs, they found the Tellem
people occupying grottos carved in the face of the cliff. They eventually
displaced the Tellem people, and used the grottos to bury their dead,
and funerary rites continue to be an important part of the Dogon
culture. We will visit Songho village, renowned for its rock paintings
and circumcision grotto. Traditional circumcision ceremonies are held
here every three years, and the rock paintings are historical
representations of noble Dogon families. We then proceed to to Sangha, a
large agglomeration of ten distinct Dogon villages – some animist, some
Islamic. On our walking tour we will see some
beautiful examples of the unique Dogon
architecture and fetishes. Overnight in Sangha at the Hotel
Campement (or similar). [B]
Wed 21 Jan: After an early breakfast, we descend the
Bandiagara escarpment, and visit several of the cliff villages: most
likely Banani (noting the ancient Tellem cave dwellings in the cliff
face), Ireli, Amani (visiting the sanctuary of sacred crocodiles,
totem animal of the Dogon people), and Tireli, where we will
witness a fascinating traditional Dogon mask dance - this is an
authentic reproduction of a traditional funerary rite, where the
masks ask the spirit of the deceased person to depart the village,
and rejoin the ancestors. Overnight in Sangha at the Hotel
Campement (or similar). [B]
Thur 22 Jan: Drive to Mopti. Upon arrival, we have a city tour of this town, known
as the Venice of Mali because it is surrounded by the waters of the Niger and the Bani rivers. We will see the
Komoguel mosque, the fishing port (including the workshop where pirogues are being made by hand), and the
bustling market where many of Mali’s ethnic groups come to trade. In the market, people from the Bambara,
Bobo, Bozo, Dogon, Fulani, Tuareg and Songhay tribes shop for salt, gold or silver jewellery, hand-made cotton
or wool blankets, or some of Mali’s beautiful wood carvings (masks, statues, etc). In the late afternoon we
will enjoy a tranquil sunset trip on the Niger River in a traditional pirogue (river boat), visiting one or two
villages. Overnight in Mopti at the Hotel Kanaga (or similar). [B]
Fri 23 Jan: Drive to Segou, which is the centre of Mali’s colonial past, as can be seen in the various
architectural styles. We will visit the market and the Kasobane boutique with its high-end traditional and
contemporary textile art, most notably bogolan (mudcloth). We will stop by the Nieleni co-operative, which
makes hand-woven high-quality wool rugs; then visit another women’s co-operative that makes traditional
millet beer. We will end the day with stroll through the traditional
pottery market on the waterfront. Overnight in Segou at the Hotel
Independence (or similar). [B]
Sat 24 Jan: This morning we will make the short drive to
Segou-Koro (Old Segou) village, which was the original Segou
and former capital of the Bambara kingdom. We will meet the
village chief, who is a descendant of the King Biton Coulibaly.
After a through inspection of Segou-Koto, including the old
judicial hall, we will drive to Bamako (Mali’s capital city) for
overnight at the Grand Hotel (or similar). [B]
Sun 25 Jan: City tour of Bamako, starting with an overview of the
city from Point G, then proceeding to the National Museum with its
impressive collections of textiles, ancient sculptures, archeological relics and
paintings. In the afternoon we will visit the metalworkers compound, where various metal items are recycled
and refashioned into new household and farming implements. Afterwards, we will visit a sand mining site
beside the Niger River where divers bring up buckets of sand from the bottom and dump it into pirogues
which transport the sand to the shore for the women to carry for use in Bamako’s extensive construction
sector. Overnight at the Grand Hotel (or similar). [B]
Mon 26 Jan: After obtaining exit stamps from the Immigration Office, this day is at leisure. For those
interested, an optional walking tour will be organised by the tour leader to visit the old railway station, the
cathedral and other sights in central Bamako. Overnight at the Grand Hotel (or similar). [B]
Tue 27 Jan: Leave Bamako on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET908, departing at 10:40 am and arriving in Addis
Ababa at 8:25 pm. [B,L,D]
Wed 28 Jan: In Addis Ababa, transfer to Ethiopian Airlines flight ET618 to Bangkok, departing at 00:40 am
and arriving at 1:20 pm. Transfer to Thai International flight TG475 to Sydney, departing at 6:20 pm. [B,D]
Thu 29 Jan: Arrive in Sydney on Thai International flight TG475 from Bangkok at 7:40 am. [B]

SAFETY AND SECURITY
Some parts of Mali and Niger (mainly in the north)
have been subject to long-standing travel warnings because of political insecurity. Our group will not
travel into these dangerous areas (which is why Timbuktu is not included in the itinerary). When the
tour leader visited the area in January 2014, the situation was stable, and local contacts at the time of
writing confirmed that this was still the case. The tour leader will continue monitor the security
situation closely, but please note that the Geographical Society of NSW reserves the right to cancel
or modify the study tour should the security situation deteriorate. As with all trips, participants are
strongly advised to obtain travel insurance prior to departure.
