2016 Catalog of Specialty Daffodils
The 2016 daffodil year came very early and found exhibitors searching for the latest
bloomers in their garden when the later shows rolled around. Some very clever exhibits
were put together using the usually overlooked division nines. At our show in
Chambersburg, PA there was a five collection of poets in the section of cultivars with
red or orange in cup. Suzy Wert’s Throckmorton at Joe Hamm’s show created quite the
buzz on Daffnet as it looked to be all nines (but had a few late division threes that tend
to look like nines anyway.) So we will list the season the daffodils are known to bloom
in-but this does not always hold true as this year it seems to us everything was sort of
mixed up! When you plant your bulbs can change bloom time too. We planted ‘Rapture’
very late and had great flowers at the end of the season.
This catalog has some first time offerings:
‘Happy End’ 7Y-Y by Roberta Watrous and
‘Happy Ending’ 4W-W by Mary Lou
Gripshover both are very late to bloomperfect for the year we just had!
We also will list many new offerings in our “Kiwi Corner” for New Zealand bulbs. These
are turned around so they are ready to bloom in our spring season. We are so fond of
these flowers and have had very good luck with them on the show bench. They are
strong and sturdy and show the best of breeding with their
form and smoothness. The hardest part is the name-if you
can overcome the Maori used in the names-like ‘Kapu
Karekare’ which is this beautiful flower on the left from
Graeme and Faith Miller and is one of our new listings.
The Maori translation of the
name means “wavy cup”.

We also have some offerings from Clay Higgins including his new
introduction called ‘Bells Island’ a 5Y-Y mini registered this year.
They sell for $20. each and he only has 5 to sell. One per person
please, first come first serve.
Another limited mini he is digging is Crevette
8W-O with only 4 available at $30. each. It is
a choice miniature from John Blanchard of
England with the secret of its cup color
arrived by waiting until the color is formed
and not to pick too soon!
