Study – Creating and Editing Vocab Tests using Notepad How to create/edit Study Vocab Tests using Notepad The purpose of this document is to provide the reader with information on how to create and edit Study Vocab Tests using Notepad. The main advantage to this method is; 1. Teachers can create and edit the vocab tests ANYWHERE instead of having to do it whilst on the Tutor PC in the language lab(s) From V6 of Study onwards there has been a Vocabulary Test activity. Please see the following link to See the Study Vocab Test in action It has always been possible for users to create their own Vocabulary Tests from within the Study Tutor application as shown in the following link How to Create a Vocab Test in the Study Interface In order to help our customers get the best from their investment, Sanako have created and shared many “ready-made” vocabulary tests and lists based on the most common course books in daily classroom use here in the UK. These can be downloaded from here. However, we are often asked the following question by our valued users…. Can I create my own vocab tests when using my own PC or laptop in the department office or at home? The simple answer is YES and I will show you how …. STEP 1 – Use an existing test from the following link http://www.sanako.com/engb/blog/free-mfl-vocabulary-tests/ or Copy and Paste the sample below to NOTEPAD SAMPLE TEST @title=Enter the title of the test here @time=0 @random=10 @instructions begin You can enter any instructions here that you want to appear to the students @instructions end First word in the source language=First answer in the target language Second word in the source language=Second answer in the target language In order to be able to create vocab tests to your exact requirements you may want to try some of the customization techniques shown on the next page. 1|Page Study – Creating and Editing Vocab Tests using Notepad Customization Techniques @time= value if you want to set a time limit in seconds. The value of 0 means that there is no time limit. @random=value if you want to select a certain number of words from a long list. For example you may have a long list of words but you simply want the system to randomly select a set number of them. The value of 0 means that ALL words are shown to the student. Using commas to show multiple correct answers. For example, the verb “louer” in French could mean either “to rent” or “to hire” in English – we would accept both answers from our students. For such an example the entry in Notepad could be as shown below. louer (verb)=to rent,to hire You can have as many answers as you wish – just separate them with a comma. Please note that when saving you MUST ensure that the file is named with a .vocab extension and not for example .txt. The correct naming should look like this when you browse to the file in Windows. Now you have your own vocab file(s). You can use them in the Study Language Lab by using the Vocabulary Test activity and selecting the OPEN option. Just browse for your saved file and away you go!
