Newsletter - Fall 2016 Schedule a Free Water Classroom Presentation Today! Presenters bring fun, water related models, games and activities into your classroom. Students learn where their water comes from, how to prevent water pollution and the importance of water conservation. Programs are offered free of charge to schools in Aurora. Explore the importance of this natural resource through movement and songs like “H2O”, “If I Were a Fish” and “The Water Cycle.” Learn about the water cycle and the role that people play in it, how we use water, and how kids can help protect it. 30 minute program- can be presented to 1-4 classes at once Water Heroes (Grade 1-3) It takes a lot of interesting people with cool jobs to provide water to Aurora. Learn about the people in our community who bring water to your faucet. Students dress up in costumes and act out the water supply process. 40 minute program- can be presented to 1-4 classes at a time Water & Weather (Grade 2) What does our weather have to do with our water? Everything! Learn fun facts about the water cycle, where you get your drinking water and how we measure snow! 30 min- can be presented to 2 classes at a time Water in the Ol’ West Assembly Presentation (Grade 4) Calamity Jane and Barb Wire take students on a journey back in time to the cattle drives. They share a chuck-wagon full of antiques and treasures and tell the tale of water use in the Ol’ West. 40 minute program- can be presented to 3 classes up to the entire school at a time Water- Keep it Clean! (Grade 3-5) Take a look at a watershed model to understand how kids can help protect our water. 40 minute program- can be presented to 1 class at a time H2O Outdoors at Keystone Science School Aurora Water is sponsoring up to ten Aurora High School Students to attend “H2O Outdoors” at the Keystone Science School, April 19-21, 2017. During the three day program, students will learn about their watershed while hiking the Continental Divide, get in the river and learn how to test water quality, work with students from around Colorado, learn from water experts in the field and debate water issues in a mock town hall meeting. Students only pay a $25 application fee, the rest is covered by Aurora Water! Contact Julie North, APS Natural & Renewable Resource Coordinator for more information: [email protected] Conservation Capers (Grade 3-4) Students learn more about the source of their water and conservation through three conservation activities and receive an Aurora Water Conservation Kit to take home and start saving water. 40 minute program-can be presented to 1-2 classes at a time We All Live Downstream (Grade 5-6) We all live in a watershed. Learn all about Aurora’s watershed, where your water comes from and how to protect it. 50 minute program-can be presented to 1-2 classes at a time Conservation Challenge (Grade 6-8) Students learn about the source of their water and form teams of “families” that compete to save the most water in the Conservation Challenge Game. 30-45 minute presentation- can be presented to 1-2 classes at a time The Facts behind the Faucet (Grade 6-8) Students learn about global water issues, our water resources from source to tap and how they can be the most efficient water users. 40-60 minute program-can be presented to 1-6 classes at a time Aurora’s Water Supply + Careers in Water (Grade 9-12) Learn about Aurora’s water sources and the types of careers involved in the water industry. 30-45 minute program. “My perceptions of water issues completely changed. I will think of water with a new mind set now.” H2O Outdoors participant Field Trips, Volunteering & Service Learning Projects Household Chemical Roundup-Sept.10, 2016 Products collected at the event are recycled, reused or disposed of properly. Volunteers 17 and older are needed to register participants, unload vehicles and staff collection stations. For more information contact Mary Dawson [email protected] Aurora Youth Water Festival (Grade 5) Held each year in May at the Community College of Aurora, this one-day festival is an opportunity for fifth graders to learn all about water through hands-on, fun activities and exhibits. The festival is free and transportation is provided. Classes can participate in the Water Ambassador Program by completing standards-based lessons before the festival. Water Quality Testing Field Trip (Grades 6-12) Specialists will accompany your students to a nearby waterway or Aurora Reservoir to conduct water quality assessments. Topics include chemical assessments and biological investigations using macroinvertebrates as indicators of clean water. (Grades Preschool-12) Located just steps from the swim beach at Aurora Reservoir, the AWQUA (Aurora Water Quality Understanding and Appreciation) Lounge serves up all the water quality and conservation awareness you can drink! Any of the above classroom presentations can be conducted in this cool, kidfriendly, “underwater” environment. Aurora Municipal Center Xeriscape Demonstration Garden (Grades K-12) Teachers can take learning outside at the 10acre xeriscape garden. The garden showcases the principles of xeriscape and students can study water-conserving plants while discussing the role of conservation in Aurora. Contact 720-859-4407. Volunteer in the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden! (Grades 4-12) Volunteers during the growing season, April to October, help keep the garden beautiful.
