Mammoth to McGee Creek Distance 28 miles Elevation Gain: 5720 Feet Up and 6555 Feet Down Location: Start at Duck Pass trailhead approximately 5 miles southwest of the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Time of Year: Mid June to Mid October (snow likely over the passes from June to mid-July). Directions from Bishop: Take Highway 395 north 40 miles to Highway 203 (Mammoth Jct.). Take Hwy 203 about 4 miles west to Lake Mary Road. Follow Lake Mary Road 4 miles to the Coldwater Canyon road and turn left, the trail head is 1 mile up this road. Description: Follow the trail to Duck Pass, approximately 4.7 miles and 1700 feet of elevation gain. Another 4.5 miles and a 700 foot drop you arrive at Purple Lake. The lowest point is next, Tully Hole, 4 miles later and 400 feet lower. From here it is all uphill to McGee Pass, 4.5 miles and 2600 feet up. The final leg takes you down to McGee Pass trailhead, another 10.2 miles and 3800 feet down. NOTE: This route can be reversed if you have a preference for hiking uphill instead of running downhill. Make sure to follow the sign to Big McGee lake off of the McGee pass trail.
