SPRING 2013
The Linwood Legacy
Historic Linwood Foundation EXEClITIVE COMMlTfEE President Page 2 Dear Linwood Members and Friends,
Spring has arrived, and with the nice weather, visitation to the
cemetery has increased. We have our usual visitors; the "Linwood Lunch
Bunch" as we affectionately call the people who come to Linwood to eat
lunch on a daily basis and OUT friends who come looking for a quiet place to
do paperwork or just fmd a quiet place to get away from it all for a few
minutes.
The announcement of the photography contest has the
photographers out in numbcc, and on any given day you can see people out
in the cemetery with their cameras taking photographs of om lovely
monuments. I have always said that Linwood was an outdoor museum, and
it is being proven over and over again each day.
February brought the first ever Home School Week in Columbus.
This event was planned by the Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau as
a way for children who are homescbooled to have field trips, much like
their counterparts who attend traditional schools. The students went to
various attractions in the city, and we were fortunate enough to be inclnded
on the list of places to visit. We welcomed over 50 homeschoolers and their
parents over a 4 day period After- the week was over, the CC&VB sent out
8 questionnaire to all who participated, and you will be glad to learn that of
all the places visited by the children, Linwood Cemetery was their favorite
place! Who knows, we may have created some future taphophiles!
In March, we welcomed over 325 9 1h graders from Columbus High
School. For three days. tours were conducted twice daily in the cemetery.
and following the tours. the students conducted a scavenger hunt
throughout the cemetery. We could not have done this without the help of
om volunteers: Chuck Fessenden. Brian Luedtke. Doug McLeod, Sally
Plott, and Pat Walters. We owe a debt of gratitude to all of you!
High school students were not the only academics we had in the
cemetery. The CSU Ecology class had a toUT, and later was left to roam the
cemeter), in search of information needed for 8 researclt paper focusing on
mortality rates in Columbus before 1910. I have been asked by the
professor if this can become part of her cwriculum, and of course I said

Our first Easter lily sale was 8 success. The cemetery was beaotifol
with the lilies on numerous graves.
If you missed the Easter Sunrise Service, you missed 8 very
interesting and enjoyable SCl"\-ice. We had 62 attendees who heard Dr.
Richard Gardiner preach an 1896 style sermon. It really was 8 time to stop
and think that even though times change how much they stay the same.
Rest assured that you will have another chance to attend an Easter Sunrise
Service in Linwood because we are aheady making plans for Easto- 2014.
The Foundation has fmally arrived into the 21" cennuy; we now
accept credit and debit cards! We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
So now if you wish to pay your membership, make an honorarium or
memoriam, or buy 8 Linwood book, you ha\'C another allemative besides
cash or check
The hours the cemetery gates are open have changed to 7:00 am
to 7:00 pm. This was done in an effort to put all the city cemeteries on the
same opening and closing schedule. Now you won't have to worry about
someone's interpretation of"sundowo" and getting locked in the cemetery!
Until next time,
Jane Brady

Recently, Margaret and I were at a dinner party in Savannah, and seated at our
table were a couple from Mobile. They mentioned that they had stopped in Columbus on
their way to Savannah, to visit Linwood Cemetery. Naturally, I was interested, and asked
about the experience. It happened to be Jane Brady who greeted them, but it could just
as easily been Callie McGinnis. They could not say enough good things - about the
cemetery, the upkeep, the restoration and the hospitality and courtesy they received
from Jane. They had relatives in two lots, and Jane took them right there and made their
visit a real pleasure.
I hear about people visiting our cemetery from out of town, but I had never
actually spoken to any of them about their visit. This was a wonderful validation of the
work of our Foundation. It was a pleasure hearing such compliments on our grounds
and our truly excellent staff. We're doing good work!
Best,
John

Page .5 Three Columbus Worthies: Unmarked Graves
Over the last few months we' ve had queries that led us to some very interesting research.
Two of these queries involved three people who are buried in Linwood. It is curious that
these three individuals, Walter Terry Colquitt, Alfred Iverson and Randolph Lawler Mott,
were prominent Columbus citizens in their day - yet none of them have marked tombstones.
Most people know the name Mott - Randolph Mott, the owner of the famous Mott house
which still stands today on the banks of the Chattahoochee, on the Total Systems Campus.
Mott is known for being a Unionist during the Civil War; his house served as headquarters for
General Wilson after the battle of Columbus. Mott was also an "aggressive pioneer"
according to Etta Worsley (Columbus on the Chattahoochee, Columbus Office Supply Co.,
1953). He owned stage lines with his wife's brother-in-law John Mustian (Mustian and
Mott had married the Jeter sisters), as well as the Palace Mills and the Rock Island Factory
(bought and sold in 1857). Mott served as a Georgia Representative from 1857 to 1858 and
was Mayor Pro Tem during the Ashburn murder case. He was struck and killed by a train in
the Atlanta train yard in 1881; h is remains were buried in Linwood Cemetery in Section 1,
Lot 140.
Walter Terry Colquitt is probably best known to locals as the father of Peyton Colquitt, who
married the beautiful Julia Hurt (daughter of Joel Hurt who lived at Dinglewood). Shortly
after their marriage, young Peyton was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga. Walter T.
Colquitt had a very full and successful life. Educated at Princeton, he became a highly
successful Columbus attorney, specializing in criminal law. He was elected Judge of the
Chattahoochee Circuit in 1826; served in the Georgia Senate from 1834 - 1837; and served in
the U.S. Senate from 1842 - ) 848. Colquitt died in 1885 while visiting Macon. His remains
were returned to Columbus and interred in Section I, Lot ) 96 (this information via Linda
Kennedy).
Like Colquitt, Alfred Iverson was a successful Columbus attorney who had graduated from
Princeton and gotten into politics, being elected to the Georgia House in 1827 (served till
1830), the Georgia Senate (1843-1844), the U.S. House (1847-1849) and the U.S. Senate
(1855-1861). Iverson also served as a judge in the State Superior Court. He married the
daughter of Governor John Forsyth ; they lived at 527 1st Avenue in what is now called "the
Octagon House." After the War, Iverson moved to Macon, where he engaged in agricultural
pursuits. He died there in 1873; his remains were returned to Columbus and buried in
Section C, Lot 634, which contains 3 unmarked slabs.
