Spend Your Summer at the High
Whether you plan to spend your summer relaxing in Atlanta or traveling
around the world, be sure to visit the High Museum of Art’s inspiring summer
exhibitions. Modern by Design presents groundbreaking design works from the
collections of both The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) and the
High, while Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine features the experimental
work of this internationally known, Atlanta-based artist. Also on view is
John Marin’s Watercolors: A Medium for Modernism, a landmark exhibition
highlighting the American artist’s modernist experimentation with watercolor.

John Marin
John Marin (American, 1870–1953) The Red Sun, Brooklyn
Bridge, 1922, watercolor with opaque watercolor, scraping,
and wiping, and fabricated charcoal with stumping, on thick,
rough-textured, ivory wove paper, The Art Institute of Chicago,
Alfred Stieglitz Collection, 1949.561R.
Opening June 4 and on view exclusively in Atlanta, Modern by Design is part
of the High’s ongoing collaboration with MoMA. The exhibition will present a
selection of works chronicling three key moments in MoMA’s design collection
and exhibition history—Machine Art (1934), Good Design (1950–1955), and Italy:
The New Domestic Landscape (1972)—that heralded groundbreaking aesthetic
movements and intellectual considerations. Nearly 150 objects created by more
than 120 of the most influential artists and designers of the 20th century will be
included. A companion installation of the same name will incorporate 20 works by
nine designers from the High’s own growing collection of contemporary design.
The end of June welcomes two additional exhibitions, both of which open
on June 26. John Marin’s Watercolors: A Medium for Modernism is the first
major comprehensive exhibition addressing Marin’s modernist achievements
in the watercolor medium. Comprising more than 100 works, the exhibition
includes a group of 40 watercolors from the collection of Alfred Stieglitz
donated to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1949 and 1956 by his wife, Georgia
O’Keeffe. Organized by and debuting at the Art Institute of Chicago, this
exhibition features additional selections of oil paintings, drawings, and
etchings that will showcase Marin’s experimentation throughout his career.
Also opening June 26 is Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine, an exhibition
highlighting the Atlanta-based artist’s experimentation with diverse media,
including sculptures, paintings, installations, works on paper, glass works, and
modified found objects. Comprising more than 25 works, Memory as Medicine
will include new art created specifically for the exhibition as well as works
never before seen on public display. The exhibition will also juxtapose Bailey’s
work with classic African sculptures from the High’s permanent collection and
selected loans to show the influence of African aesthetic practices on his work.
With so many incredible works of art on display at the High this summer, there is
no need to plan that trip to New York or Chicago. Instead, spend your summer
days in Midtown enjoying local and national exhibitions that span time, place,
media, and method. n

Take off with Art Partners: Studio Tour and Honey Farm
Escape the city this summer and take off with Art Partners to
Clarkesville, Georgia, to visit renowned memory painter, Linda
Anderson. Anderson is a self-taught painter who uses prayer
to cope with the loss of her young daughter. Considering
her art a gift from God, Anderson’s paintings are revealed
to her through prayer. Her artwork has been showcased at
Anderson College in South Carolina, the Swan Coach House
in Atlanta, Barbara Archer Gallery, and the High Museum of
Art’s Folk Art Gallery, among many others. Guests will enjoy
meeting her and viewing her work, which ranges from simple
memories of her childhood in the North Georgia Mountains, to
the elaborately detailed content-laden paintings of her present
work.
The day’s activities do not end there; next, Art Partners will visit
the MtnHoney Farm run by Carl and Virginia Webb. Their honey was ranked “Best in the World” at two of the last three World
Honey Shows (Ireland, 2005 and France, 2009). Virginia Webb, is a third generation beekeeper and is one of approximately
nine Master Beekeepers in Georgia. Together, she and her husband represent the U.S. Department of Agriculture teaching
beekeeping in foreign countries. This tour promises to be very exciting as we tour the honey house, see an observation hive,
and hear firsthand about the craft of beekeeping.

June 16 – The Tower, The Zoo and The Tortoise by Julia Stuart
“Stuart’s way of illustrating people’s humanity through their bonds with animals makes The Tower, the Zoo and the Tortoise
a great novel for discussion, and for reflection on the importance of connecting with all living things in the world around us.”
-- Gainesville Times
As our fiscal year, and my term as Art Partners President, come to an end, I want to take a moment to
reflect on the many wonderful Art Partners activities and successes over the past year: sponsorship of
Salvador Dali: The Late Work exhibition; Raising over $78,000 at High Arts Day; a delicious cooking
demonstration at the Buford Highway International Market; Take Off With Art Partners day at the Booth
Museum in Cartersville; a private art tour at the home of Fay Gold; private studio tour and discussion
with world renowned wedding photographer Denis Reggie; a marvelous Urban Chic Garden Party spon-
