Inca c. 1300 – 1545 CE (version March 2013) The origins of the people and civilisation that was to become one of the most powerful and extended empire of America are still vague. They were called Inca which means “those who rule” in their tongue, the Quechua. Archaeologists tend to believe that Inca were first a disparate grouping of tribes sharing the same language and culture, from which older testimony can be found north of Titicaca lake in the south of what is now Peru, and are dated from the end of the 12th, beginning of the 13th century. They then migrated to the area of the Cuzco basin where they settled and founded their capital, which gave its name to the area. Cuzco may be translated as navel, i.e. world’s navel. The four first Inca emperors, from the mythical Manco Capac to Mayta Capac, consolidated their settling in the Cuzco valley by political and military means. At the time of the 5th emperor, Capac Yupanqui, the new empire was now able to expend its domination. Neighbouring tribes of Colla and Chanca were attacked and then included in the empire by weddings with the reigning families, but under Inca rules. By the time of the 8th Inca, Viracocha, a powerful Chanca lord who designated himself as the “Lord of all Earth” revolted and, gathering an army, walked to Cuzco to destroy the Inca. Viracocha fled leaving his family including his son, Urcon. His other son, Yupanqui, decided to face the invasion. His elite choc troops pressed the centre of the Chanca army where there were gathered the noblemen and Chanca Huacas (mummified relics). The Chanca army was wiped out, demoralised by the loss of the sacred mummies, giving a major victory to the young Inca lord. The almighty “Lord of all Earth” and all Chanca noblemen were brought back to Cuzco to be ritually executed. Their skins were used for the “Wind Drums”, their skulls overlaid with gold and jewels as drinking cups. Various extensions under the reigns of the Inca Yupanqui and Tupa (9th and 10th Inca) were to make the empire one of the most extended of all human history. Under the name “Tahuantinsuyu”, Country of the Four Quarters, it was extended from Equator in the north (Chinchasuyu), Chile to the south (Collasuyu) and from the Pacific (Cuntisuyu) to the Amazonian jungle (Antisuyu). Soldiers were raised from all over the empire, armed with the traditional stone mace and the sling, but also with various head crushers from the Cunti, with bolas from the Collas, and poisoned arrows from the dreaded head hunting Bracamoro Amazonian indians. The empire was spending much of its energy to maintain peace and repress various revolts arising. In 1528 a civil war spread between Huascar Inca (12th Inca) and his brother Atahualpa who was ruling the north territory around Quito. After a long and bloody war, Atahualpa won and paraded his defeated brother clad like a woman in front of the people of Quito. He then massacred all his brother’s family, his courtiers and his harem under his eyes in the most brutal fashion. Atahualpa was reigning as the only Inca over an empire nearly devastated by 5 years of war. Before he could enter Cuzco for his coronation, he had to solve a small problem... Reports were mentioning that foreigners were advancing into the empire, some riding huge animals, others clad in clothes that were shining under the sunshine... The list is intended to allow the player to field Inca armies from the 5th Inca Capac Yupanqui (extension of the empire), the civil war between Huascar inca and Atahualpa, the Spanish Conquest under the reign of Atahulapa, to the revolt and the beginnings of the first kings of Vilcabamba.
