We indeed aim to be a company not only supporting schools and educational projects in South Africa with innovative, high quality and affordable school, stationery and art&craft products, but also supporting schools in their ongoing and daily challenge with cost management. The target of the Competition is to find a new Giotto, one of the most famous and important painters of italian pre-‐renaissance period, amongst young south african pupils. We expect to receive many masterpieces inspired by the different styles that Giotto applied to his work. The aim is to be creative in your own way!!! GIOTTO (1267 – 1337) A Short Introduction Giotto was born in Florence and has been one of the most important italian painters and architects of the late Middle Age period and is considered as the first in line of great artists who contributed to the start of Italian Renaissance. Giotto has been one of the most innovative painters and he was a decisive decision maker in changing the prevalent byzantine style. Giotto has been the most sovereign master of painting in his time, who drew all his figures and their postures according to nature. He introduced the technique of drawing people accurately. Giotto’s depiction of the human face and emotion sets his work apart from that of his contemporaries. Faces in his paintings are for the first time not stylized but three-‐dimensional. His characters have faces and gestures that are based on close observation and are clothed in garments that hang naturally and have form and weight. According to many art hystorians Giotto has been the first to reintroduce, after the roman and greek artists, the concept of the perspective and of space in painting. He reintrocued the true Fresco Techinque in the western art, which allowed the creation of more durable murals with unprecedented colors and brilliance. He painted many of the most famous churches and cathedrals in Tuscany, central Italy and in Padua. Also very famous is the Giotto’s Campanile (church tower) in Florence. Giotto is also well known for a legend, the saying goes that he was a young shepherd boy, discovered by a great florentine painter called Cimabue while he was drawing pictures of his sheep on a rock. Cimabue then asked him to become his apprentice. That legend is also represented as a logo on most of our Giotto Products. MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1.
