He remembered Excalibur, his powerful sword, which he had promised to give back to the Lady of the Lake before he died. He knew he was dying, so he said to his noble knight Sir Bedivere: “You may do me one last service. Take my good sword Excalibur and go with it to the dark lake. Throw my sword into the water and come back, and tell me what you saw.” Sir Bedivere went away with Excalibur. He went to the water, but when he looked at the beautiful sword and the expensive jewels in the hilt1, he decided to keep it for later kings. So he hid the sword under a tree, hurried back to King Arthur and told him he had thrown it into the lake. “What did you see?” asked Arthur. “The moon2 and the water,” said the man. “You didn’t do what I said,” answered Arthur. “Go quickly and throw the sword far out into the lake!” Again Sir Bedivere went to the lake and again he decided to save the sword, hid it once more and returned to the king. “And what did you see this time?” Arthur asked the man. “The dark and quiet water,” said Sir Bedivere. “Why don’t you do what I ask?” said Arthur. “Are a few jewels on a sword so important to you?” Sir Bedivere was ashamed. He ran as fast as he could to the dark lake, took the sword in his hands and threw it far out over the water. At once a hand came out of the lake, caught the sword when it fell and disappeared with it under the water, which grew dark and still once more. The knight ran back to the king. His face was white with fear. King Arthur knew the answer to his question before the man could speak. Then Sir Bedivere helped the king down to the water. A boat then appeared on the water and came towards Arthur. Two women carried him into it and with the moon high in the sky they sailed over the dark water to the fairy island of Avalon. Legends say that he and his knights are still there. They are sleeping inside a hill. If Britain is ever in danger, Arthur will come back with his army and save the land. I.
