Interview WITH :
Sandra Lahnsteiner
Sandra, you‘re a professional free rider
riding all over the world. What brings
you to Gastein?
Starting in July 2017, there will be two new
thermal bathing ponds in Alpentherme
Gastein: the larger pond (1,300 sq.
meters) is located in the Relax World,
and the smaller one (370 sq. meters)
is located in the sauna area.
As a freerider you have to be in top physical shape.
How do you prepare for the winter season?
Gastein is my “freeride” home. Racing
actually first brought me to the Gastein
valley. In 2004, I was a trainer at the ski
hotel management school. Even then I
used every free minute to ski off-piste.
Five years later, I did my first „film
lines“ in Gastein for the Austrian freeride movie “Made in Austria”.
Most of the preparation takes place outdoors, whether
it is mountain biking, hiking, mountaineering or climbing. The Gastein Valley offers endless possibilities.
Above all, the via ferrata and the mountain biking were
a tremendous attraction. I always find it exciting to
train in the ski resort with its peaks and downhill runs
in the summer. A highlight for me after a bike trip or
mountain hike is the slackline park at the Kleine Scharte mountain station.
What did you do in your last winter
season in Gastein?
A winter season is very long in your case! How do you
recharge your batteries?
For me, Gastein was the perfect spot
for training in January and February. And I’ve also enjoyed looking for
powder with my friends. At the end of
March, I was able to welcome 12 participants from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK and Greece
to the Gastein Valley for my “Shades of
Winter” ladies freeride camp. A special
highlight was the “Open Faces Freeride
Contest” as part of the “Freeride World
Qualifier Tour” in early April. The creative lines the participants showed from
the Mauskarspitze peak were simply
ingenious!
Right after an intense winter, I like to enjoy quiet days
in the outdoors. The Graukogel with its arolla pine forest is one of my favourite places. I have an arolla pine
bedroom and can only confirm the relaxing effect of the
arolla. It is fascinating, soothing and beautiful at the
same time when you stroll through the 250 – 300 year
old stand of arolla pines. This is a great way to recharge
the batteries.

One last ride
while standing
After more than 50 years in operation, the Schlossalm cable car system in Bad Hofgastein will be
removed next spring. A modern single-cable gondola with cabins for 10 persons each will replace it.
The transport capacity will thus be more than doubled.
The cable car system in Bad Hofgastein was officially opened in 1964.
Since then it has transported up to 120
people on each trip, conquering a difference in altitude of 459 meters with a
journey time of about three and a half
minutes. It is the first section of the
Schlossalmbahn cable car system and
it is being replaced by an aerial tramway from the mid-station. The cable
car system is being replaced by a new,
more efficient single-cable gondola as
part of the “Schlossalm NEW” project. In the future, this will lead to the
best possible distribution points on the
mountain with access to and exit from
the mid-station non-stop to the top.
Changing at the mid-station is no longer necessary.

85 million Euros for
more comfort
Modernization of the cable car system
is only one part of the “Schlossalm
NEW” project. Gasteiner Bergbahnen
AG is investing around 85 million Euros to increase the comfort and capaci-
ty of the entire ski area. The new, multifunctional valley station on the other side of the road will allow stress-free entry
into the ski area. Arriving at the top of the new mountain
station you will find yourself at an ideal point of distribution.
From here, there are three downhill runs (Schlossalm, Kleine
Scharte and Haitzingalm), each with a choice of more than
1,200 meters in altitude difference. In addition, the slopes are
being extended by 20 hectares and a new storage pond with
150,000 cubic meters of water capacity will ensure optimal
snowmaking throughout the Schlossalm ski area. A digital
construction site journal with current news as well as construction progress can be found on the Gasteiner Bergbahnen
AG website at www.skigastein.com/projectschlossalm.
An innovative financing concept
A detailed financing concept was developed to implement
the project. “We can cover a quarter of the overall investment
from the free cash flow, which is about 21.3 million Euros”,
explain Wolfgang Egger and Franz Schafflinger, managing directors of Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG. For the remaining 63.5
million Euros, a combination of different external financing
instruments will be used.
The „Schlossalm NEW“ project has set a record
One element of external financing is an innovative citizen
participation model. Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG has won first
place among Austrian crowdfunding activities of the past two
years. In 2016, the citizen participation
model of Gasteiner Bergbahnen was
still behind those of SK Rapid Wien
and FK Austria Wien. Both football
clubs called on their fans to co-finance
respective stadium projects. Gasteiner
Bergbahnen managed to break Rapid
Wien’s record. More than 800 ski savers invested almost 3.1 million Euros
in the „Schlossalm NEW“ project in
two rounds. Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG
is thus the first company in the tourism
industry to have funds on this scale
made available from local residents
and regular customers. “We are very
pleased with the tremendous success of
our public participation model, which
we did not expect in this form, and especially at this speed,” summed up the
two executive board members Wolfgang Egger and Franz Schafflinger.
Continuation of the success model is
planned. You can already pre-book for
the next investment round via e-mail at
[email protected].
A modern single-cable gondola with cabins

car system. In the future, it will take you to the
mountain station without any transfers.

Spending time on Graukogel is good for
your health! The fragrance of the arolla
pine trees is restful.
Crossing the 140-metre-long suspension bridge at a height
of 2,300 metres above sea level demands a little courage but
it’s worth it because Stubnerkogel distinguishes itself as THE
panoramic mountain in Gastein.
When you do the circular walk round the summit station
you’ll experience one panoramic adventure after another.
One of these is crossing the suspension bridge – a particularly thrilling experience. But have no fear because, as Franz
Schafflinger, head of the lift company, knows: “With its
support and wind cables to limit vibration, the bridge can
withstand wind speeds of up to 200 km/h”.
Standing on the Glocknerblick viewpoint you’ll enjoy the
sight of the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner. The path continues to what is known as the rock trail,
taking you through areas that, in spots are very steep and
craggy. The views – both outwards and downwards – are
impressive and enjoyable everywhere on the route. Sights of
a different kind are provided by the highest street art in Europe on the walls of the Stubnerkogel transmitter station.

A CARD
FOR ADVENTURES
Your summer adventures in the Gastein
Valley are brought together in the versatile
Almorama brand.
Worlds of
experience
on Schlossalm
The most diverse of the four mountains is Schlossalm
in Bad Hofgastein. Experiences range from circular hikes
around Lake Schlossalm to adventurous fixed-rope routes to a Slackline Park and a big kids’ play area.
Almorama includes all four mountains; Graukogel and
Stubnerkogel in Bad Gastein, Schlossalm in Bad Hofgastein
and Fulseck in Dorfgastein. The Almorama Card is valid
for all cable car and lift facilities in the whole of the Gastein
Valley. It is available at all the valley gondola stations of the
Gastein Valley as a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 13-day card. The card is
valid for one person only and is non-transferable.
Adventure
on Fulseck
Fulseck in Dorfgastein is an ideal place for families. The good thing
here is that you can access the mountain on foot and thus experience
nature in a very special way.
There are good places to relax around Lake Spiegelsee, which in winter serves as a reservoir for
snowmaking. Relax on the comfortable seating
and lounging furniture. There’s a barefoot pathway around the lake with a variety of surfaces
underfoot, providing foot reflexology massage to
free your mind. With a little skill, you’ll master
crossing the lake by the wobbly bridge. Other
great adventures include paragliding and hang
gliding. Whether young or old, plump or slim,

There’s a 250 sq. meter indoor kids’ play area at the mountain station. And wheelchair users can also get to the accessible attractions by cable car.
everyone can have a go. Tandem flights can be
undertaken without prior experience. Those who
prefer to be on terra firma can choose between
mountain biking, Nordic walking and mountain
hiking along various themed trails. Seeing, hearing and understanding are the focus of the nature
trails at Fulseck. For children, there is a play area
in the forest. Equipped with hammer and backpack, you can go in search of tiny pieces of rock
crystal at “Kristallplatz”.

Part of the rock trail on Stubnerkogel is a pathway built
along the rock wall.
Resting surrounded by arolla pine trees reduces
your heart rate and makes you more relaxed.
For people who can let their imagination run riot there are all
sorts of stone silhouettes to be seen on the hiking trails. It only
needs two imaginary ears for a cow to be revealed in this rock.
The best way to enjoy the arolla pine wood is to do the circular walk located very close by the cable car station. This takes
you through an especially beautiful pine forest, with trees up
to three-hundred years old. The very particular fragrance of
the “Queen of the Alps” is relaxing and beneficial. To try this
out, you can pause at one of the resting places. There are inviting and romantic spots to linger awhile at the edge of the
path. Discover the enormous arolla pine four-poster bed, a
picnic spot, a pine oasis and a number of pine-wood swings.
And you can also experience the arolla pine in every sense by
enjoying a glass of pine schnapps at the mountain hut.
FOUR MOUNTAINS
The Almorama
Card entitles the
cardholder to
use all cable car
and lift facilities
in the Gastein
Valley.
If you enjoy physical activity, you
have the choice of various fixed-rope
climbing routes. Beginners who are
not confident about using the real
fixed rope routes can get in training
on a practice fixed-rope route. At
the summit station there is a kids’
play area. It is equipped with a giant
bouncy cushion, a guerilla slide, a
crawl tunnel and loads more! What is
needed in the Slackline Park is concentration and agility. Those who
keep their eyes open while enjoying
a circular hike will discover the odd
hidden silhouette in the form of a
rock creature.
