Surrounded by music, romantics and nature lovers will experience an excursion they won’t soon forget. Interview WITH : Sandra Lahnsteiner Sandra, you‘re a professional free rider riding all over the world. What brings you to Gastein? Starting in July 2017, there will be two new thermal bathing ponds in Alpentherme Gastein: the larger pond (1,300 sq. meters) is located in the Relax World, and the smaller one (370 sq. meters) is located in the sauna area. As a freerider you have to be in top physical shape. How do you prepare for the winter season? Gastein is my “freeride” home. Racing actually first brought me to the Gastein valley. In 2004, I was a trainer at the ski hotel management school. Even then I used every free minute to ski off-piste. Five years later, I did my first „film lines“ in Gastein for the Austrian freeride movie “Made in Austria”. Most of the preparation takes place outdoors, whether it is mountain biking, hiking, mountaineering or climbing. The Gastein Valley offers endless possibilities. Above all, the via ferrata and the mountain biking were a tremendous attraction. I always find it exciting to train in the ski resort with its peaks and downhill runs in the summer. A highlight for me after a bike trip or mountain hike is the slackline park at the Kleine Scharte mountain station. What did you do in your last winter season in Gastein? A winter season is very long in your case! How do you recharge your batteries? For me, Gastein was the perfect spot for training in January and February. And I’ve also enjoyed looking for powder with my friends. At the end of March, I was able to welcome 12 participants from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK and Greece to the Gastein Valley for my “Shades of Winter” ladies freeride camp. A special highlight was the “Open Faces Freeride Contest” as part of the “Freeride World Qualifier Tour” in early April. The creative lines the participants showed from the Mauskarspitze peak were simply ingenious! Right after an intense winter, I like to enjoy quiet days in the outdoors. The Graukogel with its arolla pine forest is one of my favourite places. I have an arolla pine bedroom and can only confirm the relaxing effect of the arolla. It is fascinating, soothing and beautiful at the same time when you stroll through the 250 – 300 year old stand of arolla pines. This is a great way to recharge the batteries. Sandra Lahnsteiner is a professional freerider, film producer and mental coach. One last ride while standing After more than 50 years in operation, the Schlossalm cable car system in Bad Hofgastein will be removed next spring. A modern single-cable gondola with cabins for 10 persons each will replace it. The transport capacity will thus be more than doubled. The cable car system in Bad Hofgastein was officially opened in 1964. Since then it has transported up to 120 people on each trip, conquering a difference in altitude of 459 meters with a journey time of about three and a half minutes. It is the first section of the Schlossalmbahn cable car system and it is being replaced by an aerial tramway from the mid-station. The cable car system is being replaced by a new, more efficient single-cable gondola as part of the “Schlossalm NEW” project. In the future, this will lead to the best possible distribution points on the mountain with access to and exit from the mid-station non-stop to the top. Changing at the mid-station is no longer necessary. Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG is investing around 85 million Euros to increase the comfort and capaci- ty of the entire ski area. The new, multifunctional valley station on the other side of the road will allow stress-free entry into the ski area. Arriving at the top of the new mountain station you will find yourself at an ideal point of distribution. From here, there are three downhill runs (Schlossalm, Kleine Scharte and Haitzingalm), each with a choice of more than 1,200 meters in altitude difference. In addition, the slopes are being extended by 20 hectares and a new storage pond with 150,000 cubic meters of water capacity will ensure optimal snowmaking throughout the Schlossalm ski area. A digital construction site journal with current news as well as construction progress can be found on the Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG website at www.skigastein.com/projectschlossalm. An innovative financing concept A detailed financing concept was developed to implement the project. “We can cover a quarter of the overall investment from the free cash flow, which is about 21.3 million Euros”, explain Wolfgang Egger and Franz Schafflinger, managing directors of Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG. For the remaining 63.5 million Euros, a combination of different external financing instruments will be used. The „Schlossalm NEW“ project has set a record One element of external financing is an innovative citizen participation model. Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG has won first place among Austrian crowdfunding activities of the past two years. In 2016, the citizen participation model of Gasteiner Bergbahnen was still behind those of SK Rapid Wien and FK Austria Wien. Both football clubs called on their fans to co-finance respective stadium projects. Gasteiner Bergbahnen managed to break Rapid Wien’s record. More than 800 ski savers invested almost 3.1 million Euros in the „Schlossalm NEW“ project in two rounds. Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG is thus the first company in the tourism industry to have funds on this scale made available from local residents and regular customers. “We are very pleased with the tremendous success of our public participation model, which we did not expect in this form, and especially at this speed,” summed up the two executive board members Wolfgang Egger and Franz Schafflinger. Continuation of the success model is planned. You can already pre-book for the next investment round via e-mail at [email protected]. A modern single-cable gondola with cabins for 10 persons each will replace the old cable car system.
