Coming Attractions On Saturdays In July
July Facts
July, with 31 days, used to be called quintilis (Latin for “fifth”)
and was the fifth month of the ancient Roman calendar. When
Julius Caesar changed the Roman calendar in 44 BC, this month
became the seventh month of the year. Mark Antony later changed
its name to July to honor the month of Julius Caesar’s birth.
The birthstone for July is the ruby. The name Ruby was derived
from the Latin word rubens, which means red. Like a red rose, the
ruby’s rich color speaks of love and passion. Called the rajnapura or
“king of precious stones” by the ancient Hindus, the ruby has been a
highly prized gem throughout history. The ruby is the most
commonly named precious stone in the Bible, worn by priests and
compared to the value of wisdom.
The flower for the month of July is the larkspur. The delicate
larkspur is part of the buttercup family, producing stalks of blooms
ranging in color from white to red to violet. The big flower spikes
of the larkspur are beautiful in a garden or a vase. There are many
varieties of larkspur, ranging in height from one to seven feet tall.
Introduced in Britain in the late 16th century, larkspur flowers were
thought to be effective against poisonous stings. When dried, the
flowers were ground into a powder for use as an insecticide.

the fountain of youth.
