Monday
Joining the Roman Army is a big step.
Roman soldiers usually serve for twenty five years.

to obey orders without hesitating,
and to fight with spears,
swords and daggers

The Romans build roads stretching for many kilometres.
They do this to allow the Roman Army
to rapidly move to where it was needed the most.

The Romans build forts where the soldiers can live
comfortably while fighting.

The soldier's task is to fight the enemy, wherever they were.
They spend most of their time training for war,
or cleaning and repairing their kits.

In many places, a little village called a 'vicus',
is found outside the walls of the fort.
Local people provide services to help the soldiers.

Roman armies sometimes leave the forts to meet the
enemy in pitched battles. The Roman soldiers' training
and discipline will help them to withstand the terrifying attacks.
