Troy University Confucius Institute Recognizes Birmingham Area
Students in Mandarin Chinese Language Proficiency
The Confucius institute at Troy University (CIT) recognized Alabama students with certificates for their
Chinese language skills in 3 Birmingham area schools.
The ceremonies which were held on January, 15, 2016 in Confucius classrooms at Indian Springs School,
Hoover High School, and Spain Park High School.
Dr. Iris Xu, director of CIT, presented the certificates and spoke congratulating the students at each
school encouraging them to continue their study of the Mandarin Chinese language, while highlighting
CIT’s 2016 spring high school trip for students.
Among attendees was Dr. Rui Feng, president of Alabama Chinese Language Association and a professor
at the College of Education at Troy University.
The awards were presented to 47 students for mastering different levels of Chinese proficiency, taught to
them by CIT sponsored Chinese teachers.

Confucius Institute at Troy has a lot planned revealed at staff meeting
Confucius Institute at Troy (CIT) held its first staff meeting where plans for the 2016 Alabama World Language Conference (AWLC) and the Chinese New Year Festival Banquet were revealed.
Both conferences will be held at Troy University campuses, with, the AWLC being at the Troy Campus
and the Chinese New Year Festival Banquet being held at the Montgomery campus.
Dr. Iris Xu, CIT director, also announced that all CIT instructors had received their certificate to administer
Mandarin Chinese language proficiency test called HSK.
Director of the Confucius Institute at Troy University visits Dothan area Schools
On Jan.21, Dr. Iris Xu, Director of the Confucius Institute at Troy University (CIT), visited Kelly Springs
Elementary School and Northview High School to discuss establishing Confucius classrooms/sites.
Xu met with Wanda Dismukes, principal of Kelly Springs Elementary School, and Charles Corbitt, principal of Northview High School.
They both expressed eagerness to continue with plans to establish classrooms/sites to promote Chinese
culture.
“Chinese language and culture exposure will bring diversity to Northview,” Corbitt said. “That is something we need in this area, and would greatly benefit the students.”
Details of a Chinese New Year Celebration were also discussed for Kelly Springs which would occur
around February, 8.

Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz Visits CIT
On January 15, 2016, Dothan Mayor, Mr. Mike Schmitz, accompanied by Vice Senior Chancellor of
Troy University, Walter Givhan, paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at Troy University. Dr. Iris Xu,
Director of CIT introduced them contributions that CIT has made about Chinese Program during the 9
years.
