escaping in eastern Victoria

Escaping in
Eastern Victoria
By Emma Bradstock
I
f you love shopping, are intrigued by history or have a
fascination with the great outdoors, Victoria is the perfect
place for you. The east of the state has the ideal balance between
natural beauty and a trendy metropolitan lifestyle, with its cute
towns, wonderful wineries and breathtaking scenery.
Victoria’s High Country is stunning any time of year, but
winter is when it truly shines. In the winter months, the ski
fields are thronged by skiers and snowboarders. Even if
you’re not a fan of snow sports, it is truly magical when
the ground and trees are dusted with pristine white snow.
The Alpine National Park covers most of the area and 10
of the 11 highest mountains in Victoria are found there.
During the warmer months, wildflowers flourish on the
higher slopes. The quaint town of Beechworth is worth a
visit with its thriving food and wine scene, great shopping and
stunning gold rush architecture, including 30 National Trust-listed
buildings.
Head south to Melbourne, and for a different experience in this
special city, visit the Woodlands Historic Park. Tucked away amid
the urban sprawl, this unique park offers a fascinating look at the
landscape as it would have been seen by settlers in the 1840s. Visit
the old Melbourne Gaol to discover some of the city’s dark history
— and the place where Ned Kelly was hung in 1880.
Follow the coastline south to the Mornington Peninsula and
discover why this is such a popular destination for family summer

holidays. Enjoy the beautiful beaches and visit some of the
handsome heritage houses.
Phillip Island is a must see for the wildlife with cute koalas,
seals, waterbirds and wallabies in their natural environments,
but perhaps the most popular are the Little Penguins! Gather on
the beach at twilight as the Little Penguins emerge from the water
and waddle across the sand to their burrows. With 26,000 of these
adorable penguins living in the area, there are many opportunities
to see them.
If you love a touch of peace and relaxation, and some good wine,
a visit to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is essential.
Situated in a ferny glade in the Dandenongs, the unique William
Ricketts Sanctuary combines the natural beauty of the forest with
half-hidden mystical sculptures. Marvel at the famous Ada tree in
the Yarra State Forest; this 270-year-old tree is approximately 76
metres tall, with a 15-metre circumference, making it the biggest tree
in the world. The Yarra Valley is the perfect place to sample some of
the superb wines from the local wineries and enjoy delicious food
as you gaze at the beautiful scenery.
Finish your visit to Eastern Victoria in the Gippsland region,
rich in Aboriginal culture. The Mitchell River National Park offers
spectacular scenery and holds special significance for the Aboriginal
community with the story of the Den of Nargun.
We’ve only just skimmed the surface of this fascinating part of
Victoria. With so much to see and explore, it will most likely take
more than one visit to fit everything in!

ituated in the stunning town of Rutherglen,
Veronica Violet Stitcheries opened in September

lovely store has only been operating for a short time, it
is already flourishing and has expanded into the shop
next door. With more new stock arriving, this spacious
store is a pleasure to visit.
When you step inside, the space is well-organised
with bright and colourful fabrics aligning one of the
walls, with gorgeous quilts and stitcheries on display.
There is a fantastic selection of fabrics and if you
love yours to be bright and fresh, that is one of their
specialties. There is also a great selection of spots,

Myr tleford
his charming shop in Myrtleford was originally the Railway Milkbar,
when the train still operated in the area, it then changed it’s name
to Ruby’s and thanks to new owner Carolyn Scoble, who knew the character
and charm of the store — and the name — would be perfect for a traditional
patchwork shop, it is now known as Ruby’s Patchwork.
This newly renovated store is wonderfully spacious for displays and
workshops, with the nice big windows offering plenty of light. It has only been
operating since July 2011, but Carolyn has experience in running a patchwork
and quilt shop, so you’re sure to get all the help you need.
Known as the “little shop with the lot”, there are displays of Janome sewing
machines to greet you and they also offer spare parts for all Janome
machines, as well as a technician for service and repairs
of all sewing-machine makes and models. There is a
great selection in-store, with the main focus of providing
haberdashery supplies to the locals in the township and
surrounding areas, where there aren’t many sewing shops.
Carolyn occasionally holds a class in quiltmaking, for both
beginners and intermediate.
Ruby’s Patchwork is dedicated to providing customers
with anything they need for their sewing projects, so if they
don’t have it in-store, they can source the product for you.
