Grand Canyon on Sept 11 Dusty Boyd and Philip Sneyd will attempt to run across the Grand Canyon 4 times, a total of 100 miles, on Sept 11. Previously both completed a double crossing of the Grand Canyon, a run of 50 miles, to raise funds for their non-profit TheEverestLife.org. Each year TheEverestLife.org takes Wounded Soldiers to Mt Everest as part of an overall rehabilitation process for the Soldier’s mental and physical well-being. The Organization also completely funds a school, the teachers, and all school materials for a Sherpa’s village in Nepal. This run will use 100% of all donations for these purposes. Phurkel Sherpa has worked with Boyd on Mt Everest for 11+ years and both of them are passionate about educating the village children of Nepal who traditionally only acquire a 3rd grade education. The Organization has already funded the entire school through 2014 and focuses on helping the Nepali youth acquire farming, English language, and the skills necessary to be successful guides, business owners, and teachers in the Everest region. Boyd’s October trip to Everest base camp will employ two graduates of their school. Philip Sneyd was an obese, sedentary person three years ago, and thru meeting and training with Boyd has lost almost 70lbs! Philip is training to climb Mt Everest with Boyd in March, 2014 and is a huge supporter of TheEverestLife not only with his generous donations, but by actually participating in difficult challenges like this – all to raise funds for the Soldiers and Nepali kids. He is an amazing story. It might not be Nik Wallenda’s death defying walk across the Canyon(!) but What will make Dusty and Philip’s 100 mile Run quite Difficult: A 25 mile one-way crossing of the Grand Canyon requires about 14,000 feet of elevation change (up and down) – so over 100 miles they will face 56,000+ feet of elevation change – the equivalent of TWO Mt Everest’s! The heat in the Grand Canyon in early July will be well over 100F. It is the intense heat radiating off the canyon walls and floor, as well as lack of drinking opportunities that have caused death or medical evacuations from the Canyon. Weight loss will be enormous, both men probably losing about 8-11lbs in such an effort over 100 miles despite food intake. After 50 miles of such extreme duress the human body has great difficulty just maintaining the heart, brain, and necessary functions to survive. This is when the heat, lack of hydration, and potential muscle failures will make the run quite challenging. What your donation means to the school children in Nepal: $ 25 buys a school child his books for a YEAR $ 60 buys a completely installed outhouse toilet for a family $ 100 buys a teachers salary for an entire month $ 250 buys school supplies for the entire school for SIX MONTHS $ 500 pays for a Soldier’s land cost to come on the October Everest trip THANK YOU’S: ☺ TStreet Volleyball for donating over 40 “Hoodie jackets” for the Nepali youth! ☺ Janek Patel for donating $500 who I just met in passing on an Everest trail… ☺ Debbie Williams for donating $500 and coming to Everest in October! ☺ The over 50 Hawaiian people who collectively donated over $700!
