Terms and Conditions of the Auckland Folk Festival
Auckland Folk Festival reserves the right to add, withdraw or substitute artists or vary advertised events. Auckland Folk Festival may cancel, delay or stop
the festival due to dangerous conditions including Acts of God or any other cause beyond its control. No refund will be given under these circumstances.
The Auckland Folk Festival reserves the right to refuse admittance to or evict from the Event any person with reasonable cause or who does not comply
with the terms and conditions of entry to the Auckland Folk Festival. Any ticket purchased and a patron’s entry to and presence at the Auckland Folk
Festival Event is subject to the following terms and conditions. If any of these terms and conditions are held to be invalid, unenforceable or illegal for any
reason, the remaining terms and conditions shall nevertheless continue in full force.
Health and Safety Statement:
• The festival has procedures in place to ensure all patrons have a safe and enjoyable experience. Please follow the Health and Safety Information and
Conditions of entry at all times. If you see a hazard or risk or have any concerns, please report it promptly to a member of the committee or to the staff
at the Tower or Entry gate who will contact Committee members. Patrons must follow the direction of all Event security and emergency services staff
at all times.
Health and Safety Information:
• A basic First Aid Box is available at the Gate Caravan. Common first aid articles are the responsibility of patrons. In an emergency, dial 111 and contact
the Tower to inform festival staff.
• The closest defibrillator can be found at the Kumeu Z Petrol Station Main Highway, Kumeu. Turn Right onto main highway then 200m on Left.
• The closest Emergency department is at Waitakere Hospital, Lincoln Rd, Henderson.
• If you require electricity to power medical equipment, please raise this with Auckland Folk Festival before buying your ticket (we will do our best to
assist). Auckland Folk Festival is unable to supply electric power for the use of patrons for their camping. Patrons are therefore unable to connect any
caravan lead, plug or device to any electrical socket on the festival site to avoid overloading the electricity supply.
Conditions of Entry:
• Patrons must produce or purchase a valid ticket
• The purchased Festival wrist band must be worn at all times
• Whilst attending the festival, patrons must not: litter, light fires, operate any event equipment, cause damage to the site, buildings or trees, behave

• The committee reserves the right to refuse admittance to the event or evict any person who is acting in an unsafe manner or disrupting the festival.
• All children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible guardian of over 25 years. It is a good idea to write the adult’s phone number on any
young child’s wristband.
Welcome...
from the festival team
This is the 44th Auckland Folk Festival and we’re very pleased that you’ve been able to join us for
another weekend of music, dance and fun. The festival has a great line-up this year and there truly
will be something for everyone. Our main artists come from widely different musical backgrounds
but are all wonderful entertainers and will hold you spellbound as they tell their stories through
music and song. Our dance programme is eclectic and this year features a Chilean dance troupe
and Indian dance, as well as our more regular contributors.
The addition of the Village Stage last year was a great success and the festival will Get the Show on
the Road with a stellar line-up on Friday evening while you wind down from the week and get into
the groove for the weekend.
We have a wide range of food available and the festival market will be open for you to try musical
instruments and indulge in a bit of retail therapy.
The ever-popular Come-All-Ye’s and blackboard concerts will be vibrant as ever so if you want to
play, find the organisers and put your name down!
We had a record attendance in 2016 and the festival is evolving, with your support. We’ve added
more colour and better facilities and believe that we’re building a great festival.
The committee are all on-site over the weekend and are keen to make this a great one for all of you.
Your feedback is important so please feel free to tell us what you think.
AND TO MAKE FESTIVAL LIFE MORE PLEASANT FOR ALL…
Auckland Folk Festival is committed to recycling. We therefore ask for your support by using the
separate recyclable bins provided, and take waste materials with you when you leave the site.
•
We have not hired the whole showgrounds so please keep within the boundaries shown on
the site map.
Patrons may be photographed or filmed during the festival and these images may be used for a variety of printed, online and broadcasted promotions
in relation to the festival. If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed for these purposes, please inform the camera operator at the time.
•
Please wear your wristbands at all times to show you have paid for your ticket.
• The Auckland Folk Festival takes no responsibility for loss or damage to personal property. The patron enters the venue at their own risk and to
the maximum extent permitted by the law the Auckland Folk Festival, its committee members and all other persons involved in the organisation,
conduct, sponsorship and promotion of the event, accept no liability for any injury, loss, claims, costs, expenses or damage which may be suffered or
incurred by any patron.
•
For everyone’s comfort ALL VENUES ARE SMOKEFREE.

Four Winds
IRELAND
Fresh out of Limerick’s Masters of
Music programme, these four young
traditional Irish musicians have been
top of Irish and European festival lists
for the past two years. They effortlessly
bring energy to a crowd with their
traditional Celtic music with uillean
pipes, concertina, bouzouki, guitar,
bodhrán and voice.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We would like to express our heartfelt
appreciation of the people who present
workshops and other sessions. The energy and
commitment they bring to their projects are truly
awesome and their contributions to the festival
add immeasurably to the overall excitement and
enjoyment of the weekend.
We are also deeply indebted to the many
volunteers who work so diligently to keep
everything running smoothly. The festival simply
could not happen without the wonderful people
who help set up and break down the festival, man
the gate, maintain and clean the site, look after
our guests and patrol the grounds. A great big
thank you to all concerned.

Tom Delany and Caroline Keane are no
strangers to NZ audiences and will bring the rest of the band, Daoiri Farrell and Robbie

Dave Kahn
New Zealand
Kirsty Bromley
England
A guitarist and multi-instrumentalist,
Dave Khan sometimes seems to be
everywhere having only recently
returned from a US tour with Marlon
Williams and previously appeared
with Tim Finn, Tami Neilson and
Don McGlashan. Although he
is insanely talented, he is a very
modest presence to see on stage
with seemingly effortless playing
across a range of genres.
Kirsty is a young contemporary folk
singer based in Sheffield who draws
upon a wide range of traditional music.
She has a most disarmingly transparent
voice, but also the uncanny and
beautiful knack of drawing attention
to the song rather than the messenger,
by the manner in which she employs
it. Kirsty is currently touring her Debut
Album ‘Time Ashore’ around the UK.
Kirsty will then tour NZ and Australia
with her guitarist.

Adam McGrath
New Zealand
Adam McGrath is a folk singer stationed in Port
Lyttelton. He travels the state highways and
byways of New Zealand and parts beyond,
slinging songs and offering up low rent
barroom philosophy. He hopes for the best,
prepares for the worst and believes in the
poetry of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
and the fury of word on the page. He lives
alone, cooks infrequently and is scared of flags
that blow to the right. He is happiest in front
of a jukebox as the call for last drinks is given.
The Frank Burkitt Band
New Zealand
Frank Burkitt was brought up in the highlands
of Scotland before moving to the ‘big smoke’ of
Edinburgh at the tender age of 18. Despite an early
musical career of singing the American standards with
jazz quintets and big bands, his real musical education
came from the pub session.
Entertaining story-telling, tightly arranged songs and
delicious harmony and a set list that contains blues,
country, bluegrass, swing and some Scottish folk. Good
old fashioned original song-writing backed up by a
band that understands perfectly how to add infectious
rhythm and groove, varied and skilled solo breaks and endorphin-exploding harmonies.

WAI.TAI
Auckland
WAI.TAI is where songlines
from the southernmost
ocean currents converge
with World music. The
oceans unite all peoples,
and the music honours our
connections.
Traditional
Maori songs and chants
are fused with international
music to create wairuaimbued sounds. The songs
are embodied by the call of the feminine voices, earthy percussions and delicate strings.
The lyrics are in both Maori and English and the arrangements are a carefully crafted
soundscape. Emotive, subtle and heartening. Nau mai, haere mai.

Ireland / NZ / India
Jon returns to the festival after a
hugely popular performance last
year with Celtic classical Indian fusion:
Jon Sanders on guizouki, Basant
Madhur on tablas, Lester Silver on
sitar and Classical Indian dancer Ratna
Venkat who will perform and take a
workshop. Indian traditional ragas,
Irish melodies and folk/roots tunes in
an Ireland meets India fusion.
The Dave Alley Band
Auckland
Dave Alley is a mainstay of the folk
music world, and the name should
be familiar to you all. He is bringing
his rocking band this Festival
and showcasing new songs, new
arrangements and an exciting
sound. Something a bit different
for those that have seen Dave at
the Festival before.

Black Joak Morris
Sydney
Black Joak Morris from Sydney performs
the traditional folk dancing of the bucolic
English Cotswolds. Morris dancing is
fresh and varied, friendly and skilled,
danced to live music provided by the
sides own talented and knowledgeable
musicians. The Joakers are a vibrant and
energetic group who couple athletic
display with bright costumes and loud
bells to delight and mystify audiences
of all ages. In their performances, these talented artists like to showcase the different
styles, shapes and sizes of morris dancing, from ancient English dances to those written in
Sydney, and from single-dancer jigs to 9-person spectaculars.

Morris Dancing
Auckland Folk Festival is excited to present
even more amazing acts with full sets
on various stages around the festival.
This provides even more choice during the weekend, and a platform for alternative
folk musicians and new artists to perform at the festival. Go for a wander at the
festival, try all the stages and come away 'wowed' by some of the exceptional
talent our local acts have to offer.
RACHEL DAWICK
A storyteller at heart with a fascination for hidden
stories, particularly those of our women. With her
concept album “The Boundary Riders” - the Musical
Tales of NZ Pioneer Women. Rachel has since returned
to the UK to develop her work into a new folk musical
and to create her next album which she will showcase
in NZ this month.

EYRETON HALL
THE STOVE
Eyreton Hall is the songwriting collaboration of Toni
Randle and Andy Keegan supported, and joined, by a
rolling cast of exceptionally talented musicians. They
perform alternative folk, to categorize it simply, driven
by Toni’s mind-blowing vocals. Drums, keyboards and
various guitars make up this unique sound.
The Stove are from the mighty Taranaki. They are a
collaboration of musicians from many bands from the
region and play what they like to call ‘bogan jazz folk’.
They talk, they sing, they perform and they all know
how to bring the party. They will not be what you
expected but they will be all you wanted.

SANDY DENNY TRIBUTE CONCERT
Sunday 10.00 am at the Mill
This concert has been put together by Anna
Dunwoodie as tribute to the wonderful song
weaver, Sandy Denny, who would have turned
70 in 2017. Come and enjoy some of the many,
many songs Sandy, in her variety of musical guises,
composed, reworked and left behind as her legacy.
WELCOME CONCERT
Friday 8.00 pm in the Mill
Titirangi Folk Club presents the one of first concerts
of the weekend.
SATURDAY
The finalists are:
Graeme James – up for his first folk Tui with his debut album Songs From Nowhere and entered the
New Zealand Music Charts at #5, followed by a sold out tour across New Zealand and Australia. In an
attempt to mirror the energy and joy of his live show, he has performed and produced the album in its
entirety, with a few notable features from select musicians including a duet with his wife who he met
while busking in Wellington.
Guy Wishart - after returning from four years in India and Thailand, Guy Wishart is a finalist for his
fifth solo album West By North. Recorded at Roundhead Studios, the album reflects a distinctly country
sound throughout. The release of West By North was supported by a tour across New Zealand over May
and June 2016 and brought Wishart back into the spotlight after a long break between solo albums!
Luke Thompson - his fifth album, Hosts, rounds out the finalists for Best Folk Album of 2017.
Thompson is a well-travelled singer and songwriter from Tauranga and has shared the stage with many
– from Passenger and Toto to Boy & Bear, Avalanche City and Lydia Cole. The album was entirely selfrecorded, self-produced and independently released. It was made entirely using only an old hollow
body electric guitar and his voice.

and important performance of their culture called “Huasos”.
Huaso is a Chilean countryman and skilled horseman, similar to the
Mexican cowboy. A female huaso is called a huasa, although the term
china is far more commonly used for his wife or sweetheart.
Huasos are found in Chile’s central valley. They ride horses and typically
wear a straw hat called a chupalla, a poncho over a short waist jacket
and tooled leather legging over booties with raw hide leather spur
holders that sustain a long-shanked spur with 4-inch rowels.
Huasos are an important part of Chilean folkloric culture & are a vital
part of parades, fiestas, holidays, and popular music. The dancing of
the cueca our “National Dance” in which the coy china is courted by
the huaso, both traditionally attired, is de rigueur on such occasions.

In line with creating a village atmosphere we have a wider selection of small self
contained food trucks this year, using fresh NZ produce and providing recyclable
utensils. Buying food on site not only saves you a trip into town, or slaving over a hot
camp stove, but also supports the festival and its vendors. Thank You.
