TIPS FROM THE TEE
Expectations…Webster Dictionary defines an expectation as “a belief that something will happen or is likely to happen”. Webster
continues by defining expectations as “a feeling or belief about how successful, good, etc., someone or something will be”.
Before we tee off on a given round of golf, we all have an expectation of how we will perform. We all have a general idea
of what we shoot or how we will play. Very rarely do we shoot that exact score round after round. Thursday we may shoot 78,
Friday 81, and Sunday 74. While many believe that 74 is a long way from 81, I would beg to differ and offer the opinion that
golf is a game of variables. Furthermore, we are not able to control all of these variables; therefore, we see fluctuations in our
scores. No matter the handicap, all golfers’ scores vary due to bad/good bounces, course conditions, weather and many other
things. The ebb and flow of scoring can lead to confusion, anxiety, and even frustration. We know we are “better than this”
yet we just can’t “seem to get it going today”. If we can’t dictate where hole locations are set, the direction of the wind, or many
other variables, then we must determine what we can control.
Preparation…we are in charge of how we prepare for a tournament or a round of golf. While outcome has a tendency to
vary, our preparation needs to be constant and consistent. That being said, let’s try to hold ourselves accountable to how we
prepare and base our expectations on our past preparation rather than our past performance. By focusing more on preparation, we lessen the chance that we become angry, confused, or even disappointed after a round of golf. We realize that golf is
a game of variables and today we didn’t get the bounces, but we continue to prepare and look forward to the next opportunity.
Whether it is the Chairman’s Cup, the State Amateur, or nine holes after work, allow us at the Teaching Center to help you
prepare for your next round of golf and better enjoy your time on the course.
“One’s preparation must meet one’s expectations…”
MESSAGE FROM GEORGE SAVARDA
I, like all of you, am anxiously awaiting the permanent onset
of spring/summer so as to put away the winter clothing for good.
This may have already occurred by the time you read this, but is
not the case as I write.
With this in mind it is time to prepare for a new pool season
and all that it has to offer.
You will be seeing a much different approach to poolside food
and beverage service this year. Upgrades are being made to the
personnel staffing this area, as well as to the equipment available
to these individuals to service you.
A menu is being created to provide all the items that children
traditionally are seeking, as well as items that will be geared to
meeting the wants and desires of each and every member. There
will be hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, French fries, and
ice cream novelties for the kids and freshly made salads, sandwiches, wraps and beverages for adults, just to mention a few.
This effort is to eliminate your need to place a food/beverage
order from the Turn which will offer you a better quality product
in a more efficient and expedient fashion. This will also lighten up
the number of orders being produced by the Turn staff which will
also improve the lunch product quality and efficiency inside the
Clubhouse. At some point down the road, it is also our intention
to begin serving lunch out of the upstairs kitchen, returning the
Turn to its originally intended purpose of servicing the golfers.
These changes may appear to be a little aggressive but are
intended to improve the overall quality of the food and service
being offered to the member and their guests. I thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding as these changes
are put in place.
Please keep in mind that I am always open to your input and
comments regarding any facet of the Old Waverly operation.
Regards, George
JUNIOR GOLF CAMP
On April 5th and 6th we had junior golfers from
West Point, Columbus, Tupelo, and Jackson stay
at the Fleishhacker Golf Cottage. These golfers
learned a lot about themselves, and how to identify
their goals and the path to achieving those goals.
They experienced beautiful conditions with sunny
skies on Saturday. However, the rain rolled in on
Sunday, but these young men were determined to
improve and move forward. We discussed keeping
their energy high on the course and focusing on
the next shot ahead. Each junior had a great time
and really showed a lot of improvement over the
two days.
Our next camp is May 17th and 18th. Spots are
already fi lling up, so don’t allow your junior golfer
to miss out on a great time of fun and learning! If
you would like to register…

Bulldogs Complete Comeback To Win
Back-To-Back Old Waverly Collegiate Championships
West Point, Miss. – Propelled by a career-low 65 from senior
Barrett Edens, Mississippi State captured the Old Waverly Collegiate
Championship in exciting fashion with a one-stroke victory.
MSU trailed Cincinnati by 12 strokes after the opening round
at Old Waverly, but the Bulldogs quickly gained ground by shooting 13-under-par for the final two rounds. The Maroon and
White overtook the Bearcats (4-under-860) with a 5-under-par
859, claiming their first win of the season and back-to-back Old
Waverly Collegiate Championships.
“Heading into postseason this is exactly what we needed,” Coach
Clay Homan said after the Bulldogs’ victory. “We needed a boost to
remind us that we are a pretty good team, because we just haven’t
really shown that this year. We still have a lot of confidence in ourselves and we believe we can make a run deep into the postseason.”
The Bulldogs improved their record to 76-48-4 overall on the
season after the win, while beating out
nine teams who made postseason appearances last year.
Okolona, Miss., native Edens’ captured co-medalist after firing off a
9-under-par 207, tying with Marco Iten
of Austin Peay. The 207 total score tied
for the lowest of his career since Edens
finished seventh overall at the seasonopening Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
“For Barrett personally, I know it’s
gratifying considering how much work
he has put in,” Homan said of Edens’
finish. “He is a fifth-year senior, and he
led us to victory today.”
In the first win of his collegiate career, Edens shot 10-under-par for the
final 36 holes. The comedalist became the
third Bulldog (Ramey &
Sakulpolphaisan) this
season to finish with
at least a share of first
place.
“In my mind I
thought if I shot at least
a 67 I would have a chance to win it,” Edens said of his third-round
preparation. “Once I got to a 67, I kind of forgot about that and tried
to start going a little deeper. I knew I had a good chance, but I wasn’t
really sure because you never know.”
Edens sank 14 birdies in his final two rounds, after only knocking
in one his opening round.
Senior Chad Ramey picked up the 17th Top-10 finish of his career, after tying for seventh overall at the Old Waverly Collegiate
Championship. The Fulton, Miss., native turned in a 5-under-par 67
for the third round, giving him a 2-under-par 214 for the tourney.
Rounding out the Maroon and White scorecard from Old
Waverly was senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan (35th), sophomore Ben
Wood (41st) and senior Axel Boasson (55th). The trio finished within
a stroke of each other at 221, 222 and 223.
Freshmen Dalton Conn, Ben Follett-Smith and Jackson Dick
competed as individuals for the Bulldogs at the Old Waverly
Collegiate Championship. Conn (6-over-par 222) tied for 41st overall, while Follett-Smith (8-over-par 224) and Dick (10-over-par 226)
tied for 60th and 65th respectively.
Blake Kelley of South Alabama became the first golfer in the
tournament’s history to ace a hole, after knocking in a hole in one on
No.12 in the second round.
