Brave New World Chapter 5 TISAS Paragraph Chapter 5 is made up of two parts. Part 1 describes Henry and Lenina’s flight across London and their experience at a synthetic music show at the Westminster Abbey Cabaret. Part 2 describes Bernard’s experience at a solidarity service. In both sections the author uses many different motifs to convey his ideas. You will choose one of these motifs to focus on in your paragraph. This is your technique. Both parts of the chapter also describe how these community events function and how they affect the main characters. You will make a claim about either what purpose these events serve in this dystopian society, or what the main characters’ reactions to these events tell us about who they are. This will be your theme. Combine your technique (motif) and claim (theme) to form the topic sentence for your TISAS paragraph. Step 1: Choose one of the two parts of the chapter to focus on. Step 2: Pick one of the motifs listed below (or a different one that you choose) that you would like to explore in your paragraph. Motifs in Chapter 5 Part 1: Henry, Lenina, and Synthetic Music Part 2: Bernard and the Solidarity Group Imagery: sky, sex, the color crimson Imagery: destruction, sex/desire, religion Symbol: bottle, stars Symbol: Morgana’s eyebrows Idea: light vs. darkness Idea: unity, tension, sex/desire Step 3: Depending on which part of the chapter you pick, consider how the author uses your chosen motif to answer one of the following questions. Use your answer to that question, combined with your chosen motif, to for the topic sentence for your TISAS paragraph. Part 1 --What purpose does synthetic music play in this society? --What does Lenina’s reaction to the synthetic music performance tell us about who she is? Part 2 --What purpose do solidarity services play in this society? --What does Bernard’s reaction to the solidarity service tell us about who he is? Step 4: Collect evidence and begin writing Requirements: Follow the TISAS format that I’ve outlined below Create a topic sentence the includes a motif and theme Provide at least TWO pieces of support (quotes) from the text Properly embed and cite your quotes Write legibly HOW TO WRITE A BODY PARAGRAPH Let me break it down for you. In a paragraph you need to have a topic sentence, an introduction to your supporting evidence, the supporting evidence, your analysis of the quotations, and a summarizing statement. Topic Sentence- This is a claim (argument) that includes a sub-topic from the thesis. It is usually the first sentence of the paragraph. Just like the thesis tells us what the essay will prove, the topic sentence tells us what the paragraph will prove. Introduction to Supporting Evidence- Do not give evidence until you are at least three sentences into the paragraph. Before you do, you need to introduce the evidence. What is the context of the evidence within the story? Supporting Evidence- This is a specific detail of the quotation that you are using to support the claim made in your topic sentence. If you are using a quotation be sure to integrate it into your sentence. Analysis- This is where you tell how the evidence supports the claim. Analyze the language or explain the inference you are making about the evidence. Don’t forget, you are trying to convince the reader of your argument. Therefore, it would not be wise to leave it up to the reader to figure out why you are using the supporting evidence you are using. Summarizing Statement- After analyzing, complete your paragraph by restating what you just proved. It might be wise to begin with a transition such as, “overall…” Note- You may use more than one piece of evidence per paragraph. In this case, just be sure to introduce and analyze each piece of evidence.
