THE THOUGHT – FOX
I imagine this midnight moment‟s forest:
Something else is alive
Beside the clock‟s loneliness
And this blank page where my fingers move.
Through the window I see no star:
Something more near
Though deeper within darkness
Is entering the loneliness:
Cold, delicately as the dark snow,
A fox‟s nose touches twig, leaf;
Two eyes serve a movement, that now
And again now, and now, and now
Sets neat prints into the snow
Between trees, and warily a lame
Shadow lags by stump and in hollow
Of a body that is bold to come
Across clearings an eye,
A widening deepening greenness,
Brilliantly, concentratedly,
Coming about its own business
Till, with a sudden sharp hot stink of fox
It enters the dark hole of the head.
The window is starless still; the clock ticks,

Mahmood, the kite-maker, had been well known throughout the city in
the prime of his life. Some of his more elaborate kites sold for as much as three or
four rupees. At the request of the Nawab he had once made a very special kind of
kite, unlike any that had been seen in the district. It consisted of a series of small,
very light paper discs, trailing on a thin bamboo frame. To the extremity of each
disc he tied a sprig of grass for balance. The surface of the foremost disc was
slightly convex, and a fantastic face was painted on it, with the two eyes made of
small mirrors. The discs, decreasing in size from head to tail, gave the kite the
appearance of a crawling serpent. It required great skill to raise this cumbersome
device from the ground, and only Mahmood could manage it.
Everyone had, of course heard of the „dragon kite‟ that Mahmood had
built, and word went round that it possessed supernatural powers. A large
crowd assembled on the maidan to watch its first public launching in the
Page 3 of 10
presence of the Nawab. At the first attempt it did not budge from the ground.
The disc made a plaintive, protesting sound, and the sun was trapped in the little
mirrors, making the kite a living, complaining creature.
Then the wind came from the right direction and the dragon kite soared
into the sky, wriggling its way higher and higher, with the sun still glinting in its
devil-eyes. When it went very high, it pulled fiercely on the twine, and
Mahmood‟s young sons had to help him with the reel. But still the kite pulled,
determined to be free, to live a life of its own.
And then it happened. The twine snapped, the kite leapt away toward
the sun, sailed on until it was lost to view. It was never found again, and
Mahmood wondered afterwards if he had made too vivid, too living a thing of
the great kite. He did not make another like it, but instead presented the Nawab
with a musical kite, one that made a sound like the veena.

A man-eating tiger is a tiger that has been compelled, through stress of
Page 4 of 10
circumstances beyond its control, to adopt a diet alien to it. The stress of
circumstances is, in nine cases out of ten, wounds, and in the tenth case old age.
The wound that has caused a particular tiger to take to man-eating might be the
result of a carelessly fired shot and failure to follow up and recover the wounded
animal, or be the result of the tiger having lost his temper while killing a
porcupine. Human beings are not the natural prey of tigers, and it is only when
tigers have been incapacitated through wounds or old age that, in order to live,
they are compelled to take to a diet of human flesh.
A tiger when killing its natural prey, which it does either by stalking or
lying in wait for it depends for the success of its attack on its speed and, to a
lesser extent, on the condition of its teeth and claws. When therefore, a tiger is
suffering from one or more painful wounds, or when its teeth are missing or are
defective and its claws worn down, and it is unable to catch the animals it has
been accustomed to eating, it is driven by necessity to killing human beings. The
change-over from animal to human flesh is, I believe, in most cases accidental.
Based on the above passage answer the questions that follow :

Read the passage carefully :
Therapeutic oil of the Gods
Jeanne Calment of France, who had the longest confirmed life span (122 years)
for any human being, credited her longevity to among other things, a diet rich in
olive oil. But why ?
1x5=5
It‟s healthful: olive oil is high in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). “MUFAs
help cut bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol in our bodies, thereby
reducing the risk of coronary diseases,‟ says Priya Jain, dietitian at Mumbai‟s
Hinduja Hospital. “It also improves insulin sensitivity, lowers blood sugar levels
and lowers insulin requirement in diabetics.”
One US study suggests that oleic acid, the main MUFA in olive oil, reduces the
expression of the gene associated with cancer. Phenols present in olive oil also
protect against cancers of the colon, stomach and skin.
Good Nutrients: Olive oil is an excellent source of Vitamin E, a powerful
antioxidant. “Vitamin E in olive oil fights age-related problems by keeping a
check on any deterioration of muscular control and mental faculties,” says Jain.
“And it‟s a concentrated source of other antioxidants”.
Pure Olive oil is obtained by refining and the methods used here (heat, chemical
solvents, high pressure and filtration) do not lead to alterations in the initial
structure. It is later mixed with virgin olive oil to enhance aroma and flavour.
This unlike the virgin oils is better for frying or cooking.
Based on your reading of the above passage complete the following
statements:
(a)

(e)
Jeanne Calment credits her long life to ___________
Vitamin E in olive oil helps to ___________
