Abundant life SPRING 2016 13TH ANNUAL EXCELLENCE IS AGELESS GALA RAISES RECORD AMOUNT FOR BENEVOLENT CARE More than 575 friends, sponsors, business partners, residents and staff members of Lutheran SeniorLife attended the 13th annual Excellence is Ageless Gala on April 29 at Heinz Field. The generosity of many helped make this the most successful Gala to date, as more than $240,000 was raised for benevolent care, which supports our residents who have outlived their financial resources. This year’s honoree was Dr. R. Bruce Bickel, retired senior vice president and managing director, Private Foundation Management Services Hawthorn PNC Financial Services Group. The Excellence is Ageless award is given to an individual age 55 or older who has made significant contributions to the community through profession, service, philanthropy or leadership. the elderly, you will never learn from their wisdom.” Part of respecting our elderly includes helping them live an Abundant Life®. Each year, Lutheran SeniorLife provides nearly $3M in benevolent care and subsidies to make that happen. “The mission of Lutheran SeniorLife is to enrich the lives of older adults in a faith-based environment so that they can enjoy the abundance of life regardless of their physical condition or financial circumstances,” he said. Continued on page 3 Some of the evening’s proceeds were generated through a silent auction featuring several pieces of original art created by friends, residents and staff. David Fenoglietto, president and CEO of Lutheran SeniorLife, thanked supporters for their generosity and stressed the importance of benevolent care. A long-time supporter of Lutheran SeniorLife’s mission, Dr. Bickel said that to be ‘excellent,’ one must be humble, grateful and respectful. (ABOVE) Dr. R. But men and women have a unique set of interests to consider when planning stimulating and engaging activities for a diverse population. At Valley Care in Ambridge, an adult day center for seniors, and throughout the Lutheran SeniorLife system, staff recognizes the importance of providing activities specifically for their male participants. “We understand that they have different hobbies and interests than the women. It is important for the men to have time to themselves, engaging in activities that appeal to them,” said Susan Nirschel, director of Valley Care Adult Day Services. Although the men also enjoy some of the co-ed activities like card games or musical entertainment, Nirschel said that other things like crafts may not always be as appealing to them. “Our guys are encouraged to become involved in the activity planning, so that we know what will interest each of them. In their younger years, many of them worked with their hands, spent time in the military or liked to hunt or fish. We need to make sure that we structure their activities to reflect these interests,” she continued. For example, Nirschel said, many of the participants are looking forward to warmer weather so that they can tend to the flowers outside the adult day center. To take this a step further, the activity staff will engage the men in helping to assemble a table top greenhouse for their new plants. By assembling the greenhouse, the men will have a sense of pride in their handiwork, while also feeling that they have created something useful that everyone can enjoy. Recently, after learning that several of the men had an interest in cars, some remote control model cars were purchased. “The guys just love them!” Nirschel said, explaining that the men helped get the cars out of the boxes, read the instructions and inserted the batteries, giving them ownership of the project. “Taking them outside into the courtyard to race gets them out for some fresh air, encourages friendly competition and sparks conversations about cars they may have owned or maintained in the past. It’s a perfect activity for them.” Nirschel said that it is important to sometimes think “outside the box” to create activities that are pleasing for all of their participants and their individual interests and ability levels. “Our participants, both men and women, are unique,” she said. “So our programming can’t be one size fits all.” v Valley Care participants Eugene Johnson, Chuck Davis and Tom Disanto teach Susan Nirschel how to operate their new remote control cars. 4 YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND A random inquiry about volunteer opportunities at Passavant Community for teens from St. Stephen’s Lutheran Academy in Zelienople has produced the most unlikely, but wonderful, of friendships. St. Stephen’s Lutheran Academy is a licensed, private school that offers autism support education, special education and therapeutic tertiary education beyond that found in a traditional education program. Part of the curriculum, the Community-Based Learning (CBL) program, involves instructors taking students into the community to help them develop the skills necessary to be successful upon graduation. Michelle Bobbert, household coordinator of the Allegheny Household in the Abundant Life Center, a Memory Care unit, said she has been thrilled with the enthusiasm the residents show when the students are there. “The residents know the kids, and they get big smiles when they see the kids walk in. They know that they are about to have some fun!” Residents in the memory care units are encouraged to participate in carefully planned activities that can help them build and maintain emotional connections, encourage self-expression and help them feel engaged. “Pairing the residents with the teens,” Bobbert said, “helps them tap into their playful side, which can help alleviate some of the anxiety and irritability that can occur in people with memory impairment.” Activities have included games of Nerf football, shopping at the Gift Shop and playing pool in the Game Room, all of which have been enjoyed tremendously by both the residents and the students. One game that two of the boys, Skylor and Henry, especially enjoy is Noodle Ball, where the residents and students gather in a circle and hit a large balloon around the room with foam pool noodles, all the while singing and dancing to 80’s music. “It’s a sight to see!” Bobbert said. “The boys are dancing, the residents are clapping and hitting the balloons around, and everyone is having a great time. The smiles on the residents’ faces are just priceless. Not to mention it’s great exercise!” “I think going to Passavant has been the best thing for these kids,” said Candy Dwire, CBL instructor at St. Stephen’s Academy. “They aren’t judged there. They have a sense of pride in their ‘work,’ receive positive reinforcement and truly enjoy interacting with the residents.” Abundant life As part of this program, six teenage students now participate in Passavant Community’s volunteer program. They come every week with their instructor for a portion of the school day to play games, sing, dance and interact with the residents. St. Stephen Academy students Skylor and Henry enjoy playing Noodle Ball with residents from the Allegheny Household at Passavant Community as part of their Community-Based Learning Program. “The kids and our residents mesh very well,” Bobbert said. “It’s a great relationship. No one notices each other’s differences when they are together. They just simply enjoy each other’s company.” “The Passavant staff has been so wonderful to our kids. They always make them feel at home and give them treats when they come,” Dwire said. “This experience has been more than we ever expected, and we are so grateful for it.” v www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2016 5 MY DAY OUT PROGRAM HELPS CARETAKERS BY MANAGING SENIORS’ DAILY NEEDS Caring for an aging parent can have its challenges. Add in the responsibilities of parenting your young children, working and managing household tasks, and it can become a very difficult balancing act. My Day Out, an adult day center at Passavant Community, is designed to give seniors living at home a place to come and spend the day, while giving their caregivers some respite. “When you bring your loved one to My Day Out, we can help with some of their daily needs, so that their caretakers have time to tend to work and family obligations without guilt or compromise,” said Lesley McGregor, My Day Out manager. While at the My Day Out center, participants receive breakfast and lunch, and can take part in enriching social, recreational, educational, spiritual and creative programs. “We are like family. We want our participants to know that they are needed, helpful, and part of this group,” she said, adding that she and the staff get to know each participant well, so they can structure the activities around their personal interests. “If they choose, we can also assist them to medical appointments right here on campus,” McGregor explained, which can eliminate the need for caregivers to adjust their work schedules to accommodate doctor visits. “It’s difficult for a lot of us to miss work so that we can take Mom or Dad to the doctor—we understand that.” Primary care physicians as well as specialists including podiatrists, dentists, optometrists, audiologists and speech, occupational and physical therapists are available on site. “We can even take them for beauty and barber appointments here,” she said. The flexible schedule at My Day Out allows families to choose how much care is needed. Participants can come as many days of the week as they would like, either for half or full days. “By allowing us to help with some of the caregiving, families are able to spend more quality time together, doing the activities they enjoy, rather than always tending to their loved ones’ medical and personal needs. And that’s what living an Abundant Life is all about, right?” McGregor said. For more information about My Day Out, please call Lesley McGregor at (724) 452-3611 or visit our website at http://www. lutheranseniorlife.org. v When a participant mentioned that he missed hunting, My Day Out Center Director Lesley McGregor set up a mock forest, designed both a deer and a turkey costume for herself, and gave everyone a chance to try to “hunt” her using toy guns with foam bullets. 6 COMPANION PETS PROVIDE STIMULATION AND COMFORT FOR RESIDENTS Our five senses – sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell – keep us connected to the world around us. Older adults often experience a decrease in the sharpness of these senses, often leading to feelings of confusion, causing many to become withdrawn and anxious. Companion pets are now being marketed to seniors as a way of providing sensory stimulation. These stuffed animals can provide comfort, without the responsibility that comes with owning a real pet. One such pet, a companion cat, is now on display at the SilverSmart Technology Center. This batteroperated, lifelike cat is equipped with sensors behind the ears, under the chin and on the back so when stroked and petted, the cat meows, gently vibrates and moves slightly to mimic a real cat. TM Sharon Whalen, Lutheran SeniorLife technology associate, has introduced the cat to residents at both Passavant Community and RoseCrest Assisted Living at St. John Community. “I let the residents know up front that this is not a real cat, to alleviate their fears that it could scratch, bite or jump. Once they have it in their lap, many pet it as if it were real and love to feel the vibrations and hear it purr. It’s very soothing to them.” Whalen said. In addition to tactile stimulation, Whalen said that interacting with the companion cat often inspires memories of the residents’ own pets and triggers conversations with their caretakers and other residents. These meaningful interactions, in turn, are beneficial for the residents’ social well-being. “I know that not everyone is a ‘cat person,’” Whalen said. “So not all of the residents are interested in interacting with the cat. But they still become engaged in the activity.” “Watching how the residents respond to the cat has been so great. To see their smiles and to watch them become actively engaged in something that is bringing Abundant life These soothing motions and sounds and soft fur can evoke feelings of calmness and improve mood in seniors who may be feeling agitated due to dementia or other healthrelated stressors. Audrey Pitchke, Passavant Community resident, is comforted by the soothing purring sounds and soft fur of the companion cat. them such a simple pleasure is so heartwarming,” Whalen said. Whalen explained that there are several manufacturers who are producing these companion pets, each with different features and price points. Residents and their families can interact with the companion cat at the SilverSmart Technology Center at Passavant Community. Contact Sharon Whalen at (724) 452-3619 to make an appointment or to learn about other technology items that can help keep you or your loved one living more safely and independently. TM v www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2016 7 EXPANSIONS UNDERWAY AS LIFE PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO GROW Just one short year after opening its doors, LIFE Armstrong County, a partnership with ACMH Hospital, is helping 26 older adults continue to live safely and independently in their own homes, and is also providing social, educational and physical enrichment at the Adult Day Health Center, located adjacent to ACMH. The LIFE Programs provide comprehensive, coordinated medical care for qualified older adults at the Adult Day Health Center, in the participants’ homes and in the community. “It has been such a rewarding year to be part of the LIFE Armstrong County team,” said LIFE Armstrong County center director Karen Paul. 8 “We have received many positive comments from our participants and their families about how pleased they are with the staff and the services we provide. If it weren’t for the LIFE Program, these participants would not be able to stay in their own homes,” she said. LIFE Armstrong County held a senior fair to celebrate its first anniversary. Visitors Frank and Peggy Lou Petrilla saw a variety of health-related demonstrations. In addition to LIFE Armstrong County, Lutheran SeniorLife also operates LIFE Programs in Butler County in partnership with Butler Health System, and in Beaver and Lawrence Counties in partnership with Heritage Valley Health System. “This will give us enough space to nearly double the number of participants that we can accommodate,” said Toni Hively, executive director of Community LIFE Services. “There is a tremendous need here for our services.” The increased need for this type of care has prompted expansions at both LIFE Butler County and LIFE Beaver County. Marla Frailey, director of LIFE Butler County, said there will be increased physical therapy and activity space, and possibly a media room. Some interior demolition and restructuring at LIFE Butler County is currently underway, which will “We also plan to increase the size of the bathing facilities to accommodate wheelchairs, and to make it more spalike,” Frailey said. increase the size of the facility to approximately 17,000 square feet. LIFE Beaver County is also expanding by acquiring an existing 5,000 square foot space connected to its current location. The increased space will allow LIFE Beaver County to accommodate more participants as well as provide some meeting space for families and staff. “The LIFE Programs have grown a lot over the past few years,” Hively said. “We finally have our footprint in these counties. These expansions will allow us to provide additional much-needed services to the people who desperately need them to enable them to continue to live in their homes safely.” v A DREAM COME TRUE There are three rules by which all princesses must abide—Be Smart. Be Kind. Be Brave. Dream Foundation then contacted a local company, Pittsburgh Princesses, who turned the dream into a reality. Emily Delfosse is all of these. Delfosse was honored in March at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Zelienople, with her very own Disney party, attended by her family, friends and caretakers from LIFE Butler County. A LIFE Butler County participant for more than two years, Delfosse recently expressed an interest in going to Disney World. However, due to severe heart problems and a recent hospitalization, it was determined that she was physically unable to travel. Cheryl Huf, a social worker at LIFE Butler County, was determined to make her wish come true. “I wanted this so badly for Emily,” Huf said. “She is a really special lady.” Princess Elsa, from the Disney movie Frozen, performed her song “Let It Go,” while Delfosse and others sang along. Cinderella and her Prince Charming shared a romantic dance. Delfosse was awarded an official invitation to join the Royal Court of Princesses, which she gladly accepted. “I loved seeing all the beautiful princesses, but Cinderella was my favorite,” Delfosse said. “And Prince Charming was so handsome!” At the end of the evening, Huf presented Delfosse with a Winnie the Pooh t-shirt, her favorite character. Delfosse said that she is grateful to Huf and the staff at LIFE Butler County for helping to make her Disney dream come true. “The staff is just awesome,” she said. “My husband, Ray, works all day, so if I didn’t come to LIFE, I would probably just lay in bed all day,” she said. Instead, she said she enjoys coming to LIFE to play games like bingo and fly-swatter volleyball and to visit with all of her friends. “We have fun here. I don’t know what I would do without it.” v Abundant life Huf applied to The Dream Foundation, an organization that serves terminally ill adults by providing end of life dreams, and the application was accepted. The “It really was a dream come true,” Delfosse said. “I couldn’t believe that they would go to all that trouble for me. I always wanted to go to Disney, but can’t. This was so great.” “It was such a special night,” Huf said. “Emily was truly touched.” Emily Delfosse (center) and Cheryl Huf (right) shared a special evening with Disney characters from Pittsburgh Princesses. www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2016 9 EXCELLENCE IS AGELESS GALA The generosity of many helped to make this the most successful Gala to date, as more than $240,000 was raised for benevolent care. JANE BITTCHER NAMED PRESIDENT OF THE LUTHERAN SENIORLIFE FOUNDATION Jane Bittcher, former chairman of the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation Board of Directors and member of the Lutheran SeniorLife Board of Directors, has been named President of the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation. “I have been involved with Lutheran SeniorLife for more than 10 years, and I have firsthand experience in working with the organization since my parents are residents at Passavant Community,” Bittcher said. “Over the years, I have developed great admiration for Lutheran SeniorLife and its leadership.” “Rev. Bob Musser – my pastor, friend and current Lutheran SeniorLife board member – once said that as a society, we’re judged by how we treat our very young and our very old. That comment has stayed with me,” Bittcher continued. “I decided to accept the opportunity to serve as President of the Foundation because I want to do my part in helping seniors, who have served our society in many ways, to live active, abundant lives through Lutheran SeniorLife communities and services.” Bittcher began her career at Mellon Bank and has worked in the financial services industry for more than 33 years. Most recently she was the Chief Lending Officer for Bridgeway Capital, a Pittsburgh based, non-profit Community Development Financial Institution. She has a Master of Education degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Vermont and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Thiel College. Bittcher serves on the Foundation Board of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, and is a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Fox Chapel, where she is the treasurer and a member of both the singing and bell choirs. v (Seated left to right) Barb McQuaid, Jane Bittcher, Beverly Martincek, Ginny Villani. (Standing left to right) Maren McIntire, Jenn McIntire, Kristen Ginzburg, Paulette Musser. All are enjoying a great time at the recent VNA Hospice Friendship Luncheon. 18 Portraits of Abundant Life This on-going series highlights Lutheran SeniorLife residents, program participants, staff and friends who are living their Abundant Life®. IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE FAITH Following a family vacation to the beach in 2013, Linda Haluszczak began feeling the symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. Her diagnosis was GuillanBarre Syndrome – a rare condition which causes the body’s immune system to attack its own nervous system. After a few months of treatment elsewhere, Linda arrived at St. John Specialty Care Center in September 2013, where she remained ventilator-dependent for another six months. Slowly, she regained minimal movement in her extremities, but she was highly motivated to gain all that she had lost. Intense physical, occupational and speech “The therapy here at St. John Specialty Care Center has been great,” she said. “The therapists never gave up on me, and still push me to go further. I have learned how to feed myself again, and I can even walk up to 16 feet with some assistance. Every step I take is big!” Part of her therapy included being transported to Passavant Community to exercise in the swimming pool in the Abundant Life Center. “It felt so great to be able to walk in that water. I could stand by myself in it because I was weightless, and I could walk the length of the pool.” Abundant life Her doctor prescribed medication, but within days, Linda was in extreme distress – she couldn’t breathe, her face was drooping and her body was rapidly shutting down. She required a tracheostomy and a feeding tube, and was completely paralyzed. therapy have proven tremendously successful. “I used to say ‘I can’t.’ Now I say ‘I’ll try.’ And I am finding more and more that I can!” In fact, Linda has begun the process of transitioning back to her own home in Moon Township, something that she was not sure would ever be possible. “I will certainly miss everyone here at St. John, but I am really looking forward to being back in my own home with my husband.” v After intense therapy, Linda Haluszczak (center) has regained the strength and mobility to return home. www.lutheranseniorlife.org / SPRING 2016 19 191 Scharberry Lane Mars, PA 16046 724-776-1100 www.lutheranseniorlife.org Lutheran SeniorLife offers a continuum of care featuring senior living communities, personal care, nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, home health and hospice, social and physician services. MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM RECOGNIZED The Beaver County Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring the month of March as “March for Meals” month, as part of a nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels programs. Lutheran Service Society operates Meals on Wheels kitchens in Rochester and Aliquippa, serving more than 20,000 meals a year to homebound elderly and disabled adults within Beaver County. “There’s nothing more heartwarming than when you knock on a door and see that smile,” said Mike Dengel, director of Beaver County Meals on Wheels, “because we sometimes are the only person they will see or talk to that day.” For more information about Meals on Wheels, visit our website at www.lutheranseniorlife.org/ lutheranservicesociety. v Rev.
