Mini- and Full-Sized Lengthwise Scarf Developed by the Madison Knitters’ Guild for community projects. Goal: Create a scarf to be donated to women entering domestic abuse shelters. The full version may be more suited for a colorful winter scarf and the mini for a dress scarf. Both varieties are needed. Yarns with colors that are similar or with minimal contrast are suggested for the mini scarf. These scarves can be made with or without fringe. Directions for the full-sized scarf are in parentheses. Materials: 6 (12) 26-yard balls of yarn (return excess yarn if knitting from MKG kit or balls) Size 8, 32” or larger circular needle (If you knit very loosely, use a 7; if you knit very tightly, use a 9) Marker to designate front (right side), for instance, a pin or opening marker Tape measure Finished measurements: Mini: Approximately 45”- 50” long (not including fringe) x ~3” wide Full: Approximately 50”- 60” long (not including fringe) x ~6” wide Note: If not making fringe leave tails to weave in when finished. The pattern below changes color each row. Using a color pattern with a repeat every 2 or 4 rows (except for cast on and Row 1 and last row and cast off) will leave you with fewer ends to weave in. Fringe: For a self-fringing scarf work back and forth. The fringe is formed by cutting the yarn at the end of each row leaving an 8” (10”) tail and by leaving an 8” (10”) tail at the beginning of each row. Each ball of yarn is more than enough for 4 rows plus fringe on each end. Use the suggested color pattern described below or any combination of the yarns. For instance, you may change color every two rows, or every four rows. If you change yarn every row be careful to alternate the end you start knitting on in order to maintain the garter pattern. Note: After knitting a few rows, place a marker on the front (right side). PATTERN Loosely cast on 180 (200) stitches using a plain yarn. Cut yarn leaving an 8” (10”) tail. Row 1/WS: Leaving an 8” (10”) tail, knit. Cut yarn leaving an 8” (10”) tail. Row 2/RS: Change colors (if using suggested pattern). Repeat Row 1, knitting back to where you started Row 1. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 to desired width or until color pattern is completed (see suggested pattern below). Suggested color pattern: Cast on and work the first row with one plain color. Knit the final row and bind off with the cast on color. In between, work two rows (Row 2 then Row 1) of each color until all but one color has been used. Work four rows of the last color. Repeat pattern mirroring the first half. Further description of suggested color pattern: CO Color A, cut yarn, leaving an 8” tail. Row 1 (WS) Leaving an 8” (10”) tail, knit using Color A.
