New England
Colonies
The New England colonies were started because no other colonies had freedom of religion. There were 5 colonies in the New
England colonies. First colony, Rode Island
was the first colony to ever have freedom of
religion. Later on Anne Hutchinson also for
religious beliefs separated from here religious group and started the colony Portsmouth. Later on in History Thomas Hooker
and another 100 or so colonists followed
her example and started the colony of Connecticut. Finally Maine and New Hampshire were divide between john Mason and
Ferdinand Gorges. This became what is
now known the New England colonies.
Middle Colonies
There were 4 colonies in the middle
colonies. They include New York, New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
New Netherland was actually a Dutch
colony but was taken over by England.
Peter Stuyvesant protested but was so
unpopular that the British took the port
without firing one shot. Later on it was
renamed New York. Then New jersey
was settled by Sir George Carter and
John Berkley. Afterward Pennsylvania
was settled by William Penn. Finally
Penn received a charter to start the colony of Delaware. Delaware was the last
colony to join the middle colonies.
Southern Colonies
King Charles 1 gave Lord Baltimore a
charter to establish Maryland. Then the
king gave eight people a charter to start
a colony, Carolina. Soon it was divided
into North and South Carolina. After
that Virginia was founded. Soon afterward Georgia was founded. Georgia was
the last colony to join the Southern colonies.
