Teach Us to Pray: A Spiritual
Formation Retreat
Blessed John Paul II said, “Prayer gives us strength
for great ideals, for keeping up our faith, charity,
purity, generosity; prayer gives us strength to rise up
from indifference and guilt, if we have had the
misfortune to give in to temptation and weakness.
Prayer gives us light by which to see and to judge
from God’s perspective and from eternity. That is
why you must not give up on praying!”
Join us on August 18, 2012 at Mount St. Joseph
Conference and Retreat Center for a day. We will
have time to learn to pray in a way that matches our
unique temperament. This retreat is open to all who
want to deepen their prayer life. This will fulfill the
spiritual formation piece of the CREDO process for
catechist and youth minister. Register online at
www.rcdok.org.
If you are a catechist, youth minister, pastoral
associate, serving on parish committees, or just
someone searching for a deeper prayer experience
this day is for you. Come join us and bring a friend.
Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
“The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was
in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.”
Lk 1:57-66, 80
Hollywood productions about Jesus that included
John the Baptist understandably lead many to believe
that the Baptist was beheaded in Herod's palace in
Jerusalem. However, Herod's father, Herod the
Great, had several strategically located palacefortresses outside of Jerusalem: Herodium, west of
Jerusalem, Masada, overlooking the western shore
of the Dead Sea, and Machaerus, east of the Dead
Sea in what is not the country of Jordan. John did
become “strong in spirit” and preached to his
followers, and to people with power, to “Repent, for
the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” He was not
violent. He was not hateful. He preached the truth.
But he called people to “repent” and repentance
requires change. No one likes change. And we do
not like the person who calls us to change. John was
imprisoned and beheaded at Machaerus because he
would not shut up. Are we willing to change? Are
we willing to call others to change, even people with
power? Or do we remain silent? What will we say to
Jesus?

Fortnight for Freedom at St. Joseph
Quincena por la Libertad en San José
Religious Liberty Serves the Common Good
From June 21 to July 4, Catholics across our nation are
observing a “Fortnight for Freedom.” What is the
purpose of this time of prayer and education about
religious liberty? One goal is to renew our
understanding of the importance of true religious
liberty. Since religious belief is a good within culture
and society, governments should foster and aid the
good that religion brings to our commonwealth. This
does not mean that government should favor one
religion over another or that it should attempt to direct
what religions should believe or do. Rather,
governments are to create an environment in which
religious life flourishes for the common good. In
providing such an environment...governments
contribute to the good of individuals as well as to the
good of society as a whole. (Excerpt from “Reflections for
the Fortnight for Freedom, Day 5, June 25,” USCCB).
At St. Joseph, on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at 9:00
a.m., Mr. Tim Garrity, parishioner, kicked off the
Fortnight for Freedom at St. Joseph Parish, by
ringing our church bell for five minutes! We joined
churches throughout our Diocese of Owensboro and
nation-wide with this acknowledgement of our
American freedoms. Our Fortnight for Freedom will
conclude on Wednesday, July 4, with Mass at 8:00
a.m. in the Church followed by the ringing of the
church bell at 9:00 a.m for five minutes, to once again
acknowledge our God-given, inherent civil liberties.
Also, at St. Joseph last weekend, we made available
the “Mary Immaculate, Patroness of the United States
of America,” and “Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness
of All the Americas” Prayer for Religious Freedom
holy cards. We hope that you will also enjoy the
Fortnight for Freedom daily bulletin reflections, like
the one above and on page seven—and perhaps even
be able to access them daily online at USCCB.org, our
National Bishops’ website. In addition to all, we have
a local parish initiative begun by Nancy Kenney,
parishioner of St. Joseph. Mrs. Kenney’s idea,
through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the
Blessed Virgin Mary, is offering a business-sized holy
card (the image of an American flag superimposed
with the image of the Blessed Virgin) as a reminder to
say a Hail Mary every time we see an American flag
flying. To help with this initiative, order these cards at
CatholicPrayerCards.org/special_holy_cards, and give
them to family and to friends in the Lord. This
initiative will spread and continue into the Fortnight
for Freedom and beyond—for the renewal of our
country. Let’s keep the Fortnight for Freedom in our
hearts & minds. In thanksgiving, we pray: God bless
St. Joseph Parish and God bless America!
Dios-dador, libertades civiles inherentes.
mentes y corazones. En Acción de Gracias, oramos: ¡Dios
Bendiga a San José y Dios bendiga a América!

Reflection for Day Four is based on the following excerpt:
On his part, man perceives and acknowledges the
imperatives of the divine law through the mediation of
conscience. In all his activity a man is bound to follow his
conscience faithfully, in order that he may come to God,
for whom he was created. It follows that he is not to be
forced to act in a manner contrary to his conscience. Nor,
on the other hand, is he to be restrained from acting in
accordance with his conscience, especially in matters
religious. For, of its very nature, the exercise of religion
consists before all else in those internal, voluntary, and
free acts whereby man sets the course of life directly
toward God. No merely human power can either
command or prohibit acts of this kind. However, the
social nature of man itself requires that he should give
external expression to his internal acts of religion; that he
should participate with others in matters religious; that he
should profess his religion in community. Injury,
therefore, is done to the human person and to the very
order established by God for human life, if the free
exercise of religion is denied in society when the just
requirements of public order do not so require.
–Declaration on Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae),
no. 3, December 7, 1965.

Reflection for Day Four – June 24
It is through their consciences that human beings
perceive the requirements of the divine law. Human
beings must follow faithfully their conscience if they are
to grow in their knowledge of and union with God. Again,
the Council restates that, because of this, no one should
either be forced to act contrary to his or her conscience or
be forbidden to act in accordance with his or her
conscience. This is especially the case when it involves
one’s religious beliefs. The Council Fathers note that this
applies not only to one’s internal private religious acts but
also to public communal religious acts. Human beings
hold religious beliefs within a community of like-minded
believers and so have the right to publicly live out their
beliefs. To forbid the just and proper public expressions of
religious belief would be contrary to the order that God
has established for human beings as social and religious
beings.
The Council Fathers want to ensure that religious
liberty is understood to be both private and public. It
cannot be limited to what takes places in houses of
worship. Rather, since religion is by its nature a social
phenomenon, its presence within the broader society
and culture should not be hindered or forbidden.
In what ways is religion being reduced to the
merely personal and private? Why should religion have a
voice in the public square?
