Part Two: Comprehension Conversation Introduction
Have a conversation with the student, noting the key understandings
the student expresses. Use prompts as needed to stimulate discussion
of understandings the student does not express. Score for evidence of all
understandings expressed—with or without a prompt. Circle the number
in the score column that reflects the level of understanding demonstrated.

By late summer Ian and Stuart’s pumpkin was really picking up
weight. In Great Britain a pumpkin can gain up to 30 pounds
in one day. The growers watch it grow and dream that their
pumpkin will be the biggest in the world. In the United States
and Canada a pumpkin can grow even faster because of the
warmer nights. It can gain up to 50 pounds a day. Growers
measure their pumpkin to check their progress and that was
Christy’s favorite part of growing a record-breaking pumpkin.
Growing big pumpkins comes with big challenges. Too much
rain or cool temperatures can affect their growth. If a pumpkin
cracks it will rot and destroy the growers’ dream for that year.

they were growing.”
Can you find where the author included
comments from the growers to show how
excited they got about the growth of the
pumpkins?
