Somerset Maugham 1) He is extremely annoyed because he wanted to share a room with a British Gentleman and Kelada is not a British name. 2) The narrator could not walk on the deck of the ship without Mr. Kelada joining him. 3) 4. She is a modest woman. 4) At the end of the story the narrator saw that Mr. Kelada sacrificed his reputation because he did not want to hurt Mrs. Ramsay. This act makes the narrator respect Mr. Kelada. 5) a. Thinking skill I chose: Inferring From the discussion about the pearls we learn the Mr. Ramsay loves to argue and pretends to know things he doesn’t. We also learn that he is stubborn and that he doesn’t know his wife and doesn’t notice how she feels. b. I chose this thinking skill because I inferred Mr. Ramsay's characteristics from his actions and behavior during the argument. 6) a. Mrs. Ramsay says this because she doesn’t want her husband to bet on her necklace and tries to talk him out of it. She is afraid that he will discover that the necklace is real and that it was given to her by her lover. 2 b. At this point in the story we can see that there is more to Mrs. Ramsay than meets the eye. She is not the perfect and honest woman the narrator described and we can see that she has her secrets. B. A Summer's Reading\ Bernard Malamud 7) 1. He doesn’t have any money to spend. 2. He doesn’t have an education. 8) 4. He only speaks to Mr. Kelada. 9) He goes to the park because there he can be alone and dream about a better life. 10) I think that George is talking about an education he can use in real life. He wants to learn from someone who has life experience about how to be a respectable person and have a good life. 11) a. Thinking skill I used: Explaining cause and effect. George feels alone in his home and has no one to talk to about his life. His mother passed away and his sister and father work all day. As a result he has no one to motivate him to improve his life. b. I used this thinking school because I saw the effect that George's relationship with his family has on his life and his lack of action. 12) a. Sophie functions like a mother to George. She works, supports her family and gives George an allowance. Sophie is the person who 3 encourages George to read books and later gets angry with him for lying about it. b. Sophie's opinion of George changes during the story. In the beginning she thinks that George can succeed in life and so encourages him to read. When she finds out he was lying about the books she thinks he is a lazy bum who expects other people to take care of him. 4 Part II C. Thank You, Ma'am\ Langston Hughes 13) 3. Roger fell on the ground and Mrs. Jones kicked him 14) Mrs. Jones takes him to her house by force. 15) Roger is worried that Mrs. Jones will call the police. 16) a. Thinking skill I chose: Distinguishing different perspectives It is important for Roger to remember the meeting with Mrs. Jones because he learns a lesson that changes his life. He learns that stealing is wrong and never to do it again. b. I chose this thinking skill because Roger's perspective changes after his meeting with Mrs. Jones. In the beginning he thinks he can steal to get what he wants but in the end he realizes it is wrong. 17) a. We can understand that there is no one to take care of Roger at home. He has nobody to teach him right from wrong and that is why he tries to steal. b. I think that Mrs. Jones sees herself in Roger and that is why she doesn’t want him to make the same mistakes that she did. She doesn’t want him to be a criminal and gives him a sense of home and family. 5 Part III- Bridging Text and Context 18) The Treasure of Lemon Brown\ Walter Dean Myers The main character of the story is Greg who has a problem with his grades in Math. His father won't let him play basketball until he improves his grades. Greg understands what his father is trying to do after he meets Lemon Brown. The lesson that Greg learns from Lemon Brown is that his father loves him and wants him to succeed. The story talks about universal values like what the treasure in life is or father-son relationships. These lessons are interesting for everyone, especially teenagers. 19) Count That Day Lost\ George Elliot In a society where there are many problems and people have difficulties every person can make a difference. The poem shows how people can improve society. It says that a person should be nice and helpful to other people in any way possible. A person can help others and make them feel better by doing something or by saying something helpful or even just by 6 looking at others in a kind way. But a person who doesn't care and doesn't do anything to make life better for others each day is wasting his / her life, and can count that day lost. 7
