The Abbey Foundation of Oregon promotes the financial vitality of Mount Angel Abbey by seeking
special project funding and long-term endowments for the monastery, seminary, retreat and guest
programs, and the library. The trustees of the Foundation work collaboratively with the abbot of
Mount Angel Abbey to implement the monastic community’s Benedictine vision of prayer and work in
service to the Church in Western Oregon and beyond.

A monastery should be a place on earth that points to heaven. Saint Benedict
established his monastery as a “school of the Lord’s service” so that its monks
could learn the life of Christian charity, for nothing points to God more
eloquently than love. The good order of the monastery is meant to reflect the
obedience of God’s creation. Its chanting of psalms is an echo of the heavenly
choirs of angels and saints, and the hospitality it offers the guest becomes an
invitation to come away for a while and set one’s heart on God alone.

Dear Friends
This past August I was pleased to visit two of Mount Angel Abbey’s three daughterhouses, namely Westminster Abbey in Mission, B.C., Canada, and the Monastery
of Our Lady of the Angels in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Westminster Abbey, which was
founded by Mount Angel in 1939 and was raised to the status of an Abbey in 1953,
was the location of the 44th General Chapter of our Swiss-American Benedictine
Congregation that met from the 5th to the 8th of August. While I’ve always been
proud to belong to the 15-centuries-old Benedictine tradition, the experience of
gathering with the abbots and other superiors of the 14 Swiss-American monasteries that were represented
at the General Chapter meeting at Westminster Abbey brought me a renewed appreciation of the presentday reality of the Benedictine charism with which the Church in our country has been blessed.
The other daughter-house of Mount Angel Abbey that I visited in August was the Monasterio de Nuestra
Señora (Our Lady of Angels) de Los Angeles in Cuernavaca, Morelos, México. Founded in 1966, it is still
a priory dependent on Mount Angel. Except for the prior, who was sent from Mount Angel to lead that
community some 15 years ago, all of its other 20 monks are from Mexico, and on the 15th of August,
the solemnity of Our Lady’s Assumption, it was my great pleasure to receive the vows of three novices
who made simple profession, and of the junior monk who made solemn profession. I pray that they may
persevere in their monastic vows of conversion, stability and obedience, finding for their lives a great
abundance of the peace of Christ and the spiritual wisdom of our holy father Benedict.
Last February I also had the pleasure of visiting our daughter-house in Jerome, Idaho, the Monastery of the
Ascension. This monastery, which was founded in 1965, is now an independent conventual priory, seven of
whose 12 monks are originally from Mount Angel. It was so good to experience their gracious hospitality,
to pray with them, to rejoice in their impressive retreat ministry, and to speak with them about their desire
to grow in numbers.
But now, dear friends of Mount Angel, without losing our appreciation of the broader dimensions of
Benedictine monasticism in other places, let me turn our attention back to the motherhouse! By the grace
of God and by the graciousness, generosity and loyal support of many friends like yourselves, Mount Angel
Abbey continues to flourish, and so this letter must end with an expression of deepest gratitude to you!
It is so good to have you in our spiritual family, and our prayer for you is contained in the final words of
chapter 72 of the Rule of St. Benedict—our prayer that Christ may bring us all together to everlasting life!

Dear Friends of
the Abbey and Seminary
As I complete my two-year term as President, I want to thank all of our
benefactors for your generous support of the Abbey Foundation of Oregon and
Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary.
This past year it has been very gratifying to see the fruits of our efforts continue to grow and multiply.
However, we do not want to stand still and therefore I am pleased to announce that the Hilltop has
commenced a strategic planning effort, which will guide us into the future.
During this past year, we made improvements to the Retreat House and the Seminary operated at full
capacity (190 Seminarians). This revival commends the quality of our Seminary program and is an
answer to our prayers for increased vocations.
One major personnel change was the departure of Steve Beaird, director of development. Steve made a
major contribution to the Hilltop during his tenure. We were pleased to hire Jodi Kilcup as director of
development in February. Jodi has proven to be a quick study and I hope each of you will have a chance
to meet her soon.
I am gratified by the increased awareness of Mount Angel Abbey within our Catholic community,
as more of us recognize the tremendous impact it has on our spiritual lives. Our annual events, the
Seminary Benefit Dinner, Festival of Arts & Wine and Abbot’s Appreciation Brunch, are all well
supported by our friends.
We had a strong year financially, and especially benefitted from our successful appeals, events and
bequests. The Abbey has been blessed to be remembered by more and more of our benefactors in their
wills. By the end of the fiscal year, on June 30, the assets of the Foundation had grown from $20 million
to $25 million. These assets promise crucial support for the enduring mission of the Abbey and the
Seminary.
I would like also to express my thanks to all the members of our Foundation Board of Trustees. The board
has been instrumental in helping the Abbot accomplish his goals. We especially pay thanks to retiring
board member Barton DeLacy.
While the past year has been very successful, there is still a lot left to be accomplished. Please support
Abbot Gregory and our new Foundation President, Lynn Cayanus Jones, by continuing your generous
support of the Abbey Foundation, as they build on the accomplishments of their predecessors.

Endowment Support
Gifts to endowed funds at Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary provide annual
financial support for generations to come.
The Abbey Foundation of Oregon invests the endowed funds, so that the Abbey and Seminary may spend a portion of the
income earned from the investments each year. The remainder is added to the original principal, which continues to grow,
extending the impact of our benefactors’ support into the future.
Some donors choose to create restricted endowed funds for a particular purpose (such as seminarian education, facilities
improvements or monastery support) and the money in that fund can be used only to advance that purpose. Others establish
unrestricted funds designed to further the Abbey’s mission, and the Abbey has the freedom to determine what priorities the
funds will support. Of the total endowment, approximately 52% is in restricted funds and 48% is in unrestricted funds.
Establishing a new endowed fund in honor or memory of a loved one creates a legacy for the benefactor and for Mount
Angel Abbey and Seminary. The minimum amount required to establish a permanently endowed fund is $50,000. Many
benefactors create a fund and make annual contributions until it crosses the endowment threshold.

Monastery Report
Mount Angel Abbey is a community of Benedictine Monks founded in 1882 by the Abbey of Engelberg
in Switzerland. We maintain a monastic tradition that has been a vital part of the Roman Catholic
Church for more than 1,500 years. Responding to God’s call to holiness and preferring nothing whatever
to Christ, we dedicate ourselves, under a Rule and an abbot to a life of prayer and work. We strive to
support one another in community, to serve God, the Church, and the larger society. We do this as we
celebrate the Holy Eucharist together, pray the Liturgy of the Hours five times daily in choir, and devote
ourselves to reading, work and silence.

Library Report
The library is one of Mount Angel Abbey’s principal works of Christian service. It
has been made possible by the gifts of many people; its mission is to serve all who
wish to use its resources.
The library strives to serve the scholarly and recreational needs of its patrons for
reading, listening and visual material in many areas of human culture, especially
theology, language and literature, philosophy and the arts, as well as social
science and natural history.
Patrons of the Abbey’s library include students and faculty and staff of Mount
Angel Seminary, scholars and religious professionals of many denominations,
and any interested person who requests user and borrower privileges.

Benedictines are famed for their unstinting hospitality. It’s clear that Benedictine
benefactors share that most gracious value. One donor, a young father, recently
told us that he makes contributions to the Seminary because he believes his son
will one day be a priest. In another meeting, a trio of brothers spoke movingly
about continuing their late parents’ unwavering commitment to build up the
priesthood.
Some of our friends speak volumes with their actions. An active volunteer
recently returned from a trip to Italy, ready to assist with plans to renovate the
Abbey’s Retreat House. Another benefactor, upon seeing the worn and stained
carpet in an aging building, sent installers to the hilltop the very next day to
measure for new floor coverings!
Still other benefactors bring us the perspective of eternity. This year, we have
received generous bequests that will fund Seminary faculty and a lecture series,
provide infirmary care for our elderly monks, and help meet other pressing
needs, such as an endowment to support our facilities.

Benedictines have been praying, working and studying in community for more
than 1,500 years. We all are fortunate to play a part in the Abbey’s ongoing story
