Our Vision: Come as you are. Exper ience God’s love. Go out like Christ.
Our Mission: Black Rock Church is a place of refuge where people are
renewed and transformed by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus
peacefully, simply, together
Jesus used stories when he spoke to the people. In fact, he did not tell
them anything without using stories. (Matt 13:34 CEV)
“This is a story full of love, a song to set us free.”
So sings Hymnal #315 about the biblical story, culminating with the
good news of our salvation in Jesus Christ, which is indeed a story full
of love and a song to set us free. As the Bible tells the story of God’s
people throughout history, so we each have stories to tell of our journeys
in life and faith. Always our stories connect with God’s story, and often
our stories intertwine with one another’s.
In my first Pastor’s Pen article, written when I had been at Black
Rock less than two weeks, I reflected on how many of you I had already
met, and the plentiful anecdotes you had shared. I was blessed as you
entrusted me with your tales of life and faith. And I was looking forward
to hearing more of your stories, and telling more of mine, as we began
our ministry together.
Over the past nine and a half years, we have indeed shared numerous
narratives, some spoken and some lived. We told silly jokes and uttered
heartfelt prayers. We howled with laughter and cried with pain. We
chatted about trivial matters and we voiced our views on issues that
touched us deeply. During and between the conversations, we worked
and played, we worshipped and served, we acted with bold confidence
and we paused for quiet discernment. Through it all, we opened
ourselves to one another as we wondered and wandered and waited
together in the presence of God through the Spirit of Christ.
Our time together has been a story full of love, and will become the
song that sets us free to live into the next chapter, in which we journey
separate ways yet retain the rich history we have shared. I am confident
that God will be with each of us wherever our unfolding stories take us,
because we continue to share the story that is near and dear to all of us,
as sung in Hymnal #398 —

Meat Canning Wrap-Up
The 2017 Meat Canning Project finished with 53, 120 lbs. of chicken
canned by nearly 250 volunteers from the Southern PA and Mid-Atlantic
Districts. Black Rock contributed 11 volunteers to the effort including
Pastor Dave and Kathy Miller, Rich Shaffer, Duane Shaulis, John
Werner, Pat Challenger, Lyn Haring, and Greg Wentz. Serving lunch on
Monday, April 24, was Shirley and Paul Boldosser, Mary Wunderlich,
and Brian Challenger.
Total funds collected this year was $47,301.42 from 28 Southern PA
District congregations and two individuals. Black Rock gave $3,131.98
to the cause.
Eight skids of canned chicken were sent to Venezuela and each of the
Districts received over 350 cases to distribute to their various agencies
and food banks.
This was the 40th year the two Districts joined together in this project
and your prayers, volunteer time, and donations will keep it going strong.
“Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble!
Then your light will shine out from the darkness,
and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day.”

Disaster Relief Auction
Another joint effort of the Southern PA and Mid-Atlantic Districts is the
Annual Disaster Relief Auction. Scheduled for September 22-23 at the
Lebanon Valley Expo, this is the 41st year of the auction!
There’s something for every age including
arts and crafts, a 5k race, a family fun run,
a farmer’s market, share-a-meal, two
blood drives, auctions galore, and tons of
children’s activities on the schedule.
Needless to say, the food will be plentiful
and good. Plan ahead! Set aside a day (or
two) to enjoy the auction with friends and
family, while at the same time, helping families who may have lost
everything they own due to a natural disaster.
Summer Plans?
Planning a summer vacation? Have lots of
weekend activities on the calendar? It’s a
known fact that summer attendance at worship
will dwindle as we juggle our busy summer
attending sporting events, day trips to water
parks, renewing relationships at family
reunions. But your absence doesn’t need to
affect your giving!
If you are not already using it, try E-giving! It’s user friendly and
accessible from our Black Rock web page, www.blackrockchurch.org.
You can make one-time contributions or schedule contributions ahead if
you know you will not be in church on a particular Sunday. You are in
complete control of when your gifts are sent to the church and use of
this service doesn’t cost you the giver a penny! Call the church office if
you need assistance. Jan can walk you through the entire process.
Spring Fair Wrap-Up
The Spring Fair was not rained out! Considering the fact ducks may have
had a better day, our attendance was good enough to render the day a
success; everyone enjoyed the entertainment and the food. The Fair
netted $895.42. These funds will remain in a fundraiser account to give
the next Spring Fair a head start. The theme baskets netted $362 and $38
will be added from the Fair proceeds to send $400 to HACC. Thanks to
everyone who contributed time, money, and energy.

We Are The Church
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the
evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his
people for works of service, so that the body of Christ
may be built up…”
from Ephesians 4:11-12 NIV
It is truly at times of cross roads that sometimes
people panic. The reasons can be very logical. The future’s uncertain, the
road seems unclear, and the unknown is frightening. However, what an
even greater opportunity for us to remember what the Apostle Paul
reminded the church in Ephesus: No one person is bigger than any of
them.
You know what, this is actually true all the time, not just when a
church is looking for a pastor. It is crucial the body of believers, though
needing quality leadership, recognizes we all have different gifts and
callings. A pastor cannot have possibly all the callings of many, and
furthermore, is not supposed to either! God allows the joy of the journey
to remind us we must be remade in the image of Jesus alone. While that
journey in faith is always an individual choice, we must remember the
disciples even needed each other to accomplish a greater whole, to leave
an imprint on a world of unbelief. And then, not everything was great.
So it is up to us to continue drawing close to each other, recognizing
we can do more together than apart with or without pastoral leadership.
I’ve seen so many gifts in the last month from being at the Easter egg
hunt to hearing first time worship leaders to noticing the organization
that’s happened with the spring fair. God is working more than ever and
Jesus is ready to do mighty things at Black Rock. Let’s not put out his
light. Let’s shine it!
A Special Time for Black Rock
With mixed emotions, we will be saying good-bye to Pastor Dave in
June. He will be retiring on June 30 after blessing us with 9½ years of
pastoral leadership. Although it will be sad to see him leave, we rejoice
in knowing that he and Kathy will have the opportunity to spend more
time with family, travel, and pursue their dreams.
Something special has been planned for each Sunday’s Worship
Service in June to honor both Dave and Kathy. On June 25, a luncheon
will be held following Worship to celebrate his retirement. The fare is
being provided by our Rec & Fellowship Team and everyone is invited.
Be in prayer for Black Rock as we enter this time of transition, and
for Dave and Kathy as they begin a new phase in their lives.

Reflections from Within the Pastor’s Family Fishbowl
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about our time here at Black Rock
Church of the Brethren. When we came in January of 2008 I was
experiencing many emotions about leaving the West Richmond Church
of the Brethren and a fulltime job that was very rewarding. Sadness,
doubt, anger. Not too much joy. It was a hard move for me and it took
awhile for me to realize that I was grieving because I was so caught up
in worrying about moving Hannah and Kinsey in the middle of their
school year and what impact that would have on them. I wasn’t paying
attention to what I was feeling. I couldn’t identify it as grief.
So although Black Rock was very warm and welcoming to our
whole family I was not at a place emotionally to accept it, let alone
appreciate it. However, on reflecting back to the Sunday that Dave
preached his trial sermon I do remember a couple of things that were
signs of the joy to come.
As Dave was kneeling at the front of the church and having a prayer
of blessing and a laying on of hands I was very quietly crying and trying
to hide it. The person standing next to me was Linda Gerber and she
gently reached out and put her arm around me in an outpouring of
compassion. She knew what I was experiencing.
A bit later as our family was standing at the back of the church
following the service a little girl came up to greet us with a radiant smile
on her face and shyly slipped her hand into Hannah’s. That was our first
meeting with Julia Stonesifer.
As the weeks passed I found myself gradually adjusting to this new
place and came to realize that I did need to grieve. It was a revelation.
And it was okay for me to be feeling this way.
To give a bit of perspective on why this move had impacted me so
strongly you have to understand that I am a strong introvert and it is
hard for me to accept change. This journey that Dave and I embarked on
as he pursued his calling in ministry has pushed me way out of my
comfort zone. But further reflection has opened my eyes to the
importance of change and risk in order to grow. I don’t like it. It doesn’t
feel good. But it is good for me and it has helped me to grow and
become what I hope is a better person.

Planning Team Announces Fall Journey
As we at Black Rock anticipate a time of transition, your VMJ team
is excited to be an important part of that process. It is truly a time for us
to focus on deepening our faith in our Lord, as well as drawing close
together. Both of these happen by delving into the Bible, and simply
talking about it in various ways, gaining people’s insights to deepen our
own understanding, as well as simply listening to others views which
might open us to new ways of thinking.
Your Vital Ministry Journey team is excited to inform you we are
making plans to launch this Vital Ministry Journey for 2017 on August 5.
Please strongly consider joining in our time together. You don’t have to
be “a Bible scholar” or speak in big words, you simply are invited to get
to know others in ways other than Sunday mornings. We have been
excited about how the VMJ has been received and appreciated by those
who have previously participated.
Our theme this time around will be “Worship: Responding to
God’s Love.” This Church of the Brethren written curriculum will help
us work through familiar Bible passages and deepen our understanding
of what being a follower of Jesus and a part of His church really means.
We invite you to simply be listening as we move forward. In June,
we will be making announcements and recruiting hosts as we begin to
prepare the launching of this time of togetherness and rejuvenation. As
always if you decide not to participate, please pray for Black Rock’s
ministry as we journey forward especially in this season of preparing for
what God would have us do next.
Sincerely,

So here we are. Dave and I are leaving this congregation 9½ years
later and embarking on a new adventure. Retirement. I must say that
there is a bit more excitement for me about this change. But it is also a
time of not knowing or understanding what comes next.
Black Rock is experiencing these things as well. It is a time of not
knowing or understanding what is ahead. But the one thing I do know
for Black Rock is that you may not like it and it may not feel good, but
God is in control and will guide you through the change and the risktaking and very good things will be a result.
Thank you for allowing each of us to be ourselves. For giving us
space to grow here at Black Rock. And thank you for the love you have
extended countless times to Dave and me and our family.
I would like to close with the following scripture from
Colossians 3:14 (NRSV):
Above all, clothe yourselves with love,
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

2017 Vacation Bible School
All ages are invited to come explore the Parables of
Jesus and discover the hidden treasure of their
meaning for our lives during Vacation Bible School
from June 19-22, 6:00-8:15pm. The theme,
“Digging For Treasure: Parables Revealed” will be
“revealed” through songs, puppet plays, crafts,
games and Bible discovery. Pastor Dave and
Brandon are also planning an adult Bible study.
We’ll have snacks each evening through Wednesday and on Thursday
evening, we’ll meet at Codorus Park for a picnic and enjoy God’s
outdoors as we play and fellowship together.
The offering this year will be given to Heifer International which sends
animals, trees, bees, and much more to the needy around the world. Visit
www.heifer.org to learn more about this vital organization.

Sincerely,
Your VMJ Team

~ Kathy Miller
