THE HOLY FATHER’S VISION FOR EUROPE
I WROTE LAST WEEK of the need to show strong loyalty to the
pope as the successor of St Peter and the Vicar of Jesus Christ on
earth, the same loyalty as Catholics were bound to show to his
predecessors. Loyalty to the pope is a distinguishing mark of
Catholics in our society. One of the things this means, as we
considered in the second of our Lent talks, is being aware of what
the pope teaches; this last week, the fourth of Lent, has seen events
all over Europe marking the sixtieth anniversary of the signing of
the Treaty of Rome and the triggering by Theresa May of Article
50 of the Lisbon treaty, so it’s worth recalling the fullest exposition
of our teaching about Europe by the Holy Father, in a speech he
made last May when he was awarded the Charlemagne Prize. It is
best to let the Holy Father speak for himself in these extracts (the
whole address is on www.vatican.va).
‘They [the founders of Europe] were prepared to pursue
alternative and innovative paths in a world scarred by war.
Not only did they boldly conceive the idea of Europe, but they
dared to change radically the models that had led only to
violence and destruction. ...Today, in our own world, marked
by so much conflict and suffering, there is a need to return to
the same de facto solidarity and concrete generosity that
followed the Second World War. The founding fathers were
heralds of peace and prophets of the future. Today more than
ever, their vision inspires us to build bridges and tear down
walls.........
The roots of our peoples, the roots of Europe, were
consolidated down the centuries by the constant need to
integrate in new syntheses the most varied and discrete
cultures. The identity of Europe is, and always has been, a
dynamic and multicultural identity. Political activity cannot
fail to see the urgency of this fundamental task. We know
that “the whole is greater than the part, but it is also greater
than the sum of the parts”, and this requires that we work
to “broaden our horizons and see the greater good which
will benefit us all”. We are asked to promote an integration
that finds in solidarity a way of acting, a means of making
history.... ..If there is one word that we should never tire of
repeating, it is this: dialogue. We are called to promote a
culture of dialogue by every possible means and thus to
rebuild the fabric of society. The culture of dialogue entails
a true apprenticeship and a discipline that enables us to
view others as valid dialogue partners, to respect the
foreigner, the immigrant and people from different cultures
as worthy of being listened to. Today we urgently need to
engage all the members of society in building “a culture
which privileges dialogue as a form of encounter” and in
creating “a means for building consensus and agreement
while seeking the goal of a just, responsive and inclusive
society...I dream of a new European humanism...I dream of
a Europe that is young, still capable of being a mother, a
mother who has life because she respects life and offers hope
for life...a Europe that cares for children, that offers
fraternal help to the poor and those newcomers seeking
acceptance because they have lost every-thing and need
shelter...a Europe that is attentive to and concerned for the
infirm and the elderly, lest they be simply set aside as
useless...a Europe where being a migrant is not a crime but
a summons to greater commitment on behalf of the dignity
of every human being...a Europe where young people
breathe the pure air of honesty, where they love the beauty
of a culture and a simple life undefiled by the insatiable
needs of consumerism, where getting married and having
children is a responsibility and a great joy, not a problem
due to the lack of stable employment.....’

PREPARATIONS FOR EASTER
EASTER VIGIL
Each year following the Easter Vigil we hold a
reception in the Hall to celebrate the resurrection of the
Lord and to welcome our new Catholics into our
Parish. The team of volunteers who organise this has
dwindled and we are in real need of help so that this lovely
occasion can continue. If you would be able to help either
by preparing food, setting up or helping after the Vigil Mass
(or all three) would you please email the office or phone us
so we can put you in touch with each other.
We are desperately short of offers of help.

Good Friday - April 14 at 3pm

A number of Readers are required over the

[email protected] and indicate which
Service/s you will be attending. Thank you
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE FOR CHILDREN
This is on Good Friday at 10.00am in the
Church. It is a lovely service and we are
looking for children to take part. We need
confident readers who must be able to
attend both the rehearsal at the church on
Palm Sunday 9 April at 4.00pm, as well as
the Good Friday Service itself.
To help us plan the service and allocate readings,
please contact Maria Crowe at:
[email protected]
Thank you to those who responded to last week’s call
for help. We are still short of readers, so please get in
touch.
These talks are being given in the Church. For those
who are unable to attend in person they will be live
streamed and will also be available to listen to for a
month.
PARISH FAIR
There will not be a St Edmund’s summer fair this year. We
understand that this is a disappointment to many of you.
However, in the near future the Parish Finance Committee
will be announcing an appeal for funds to carry out major
structural works on the Church. Because of this and the
CAFOD COLLECTION
demands that it will place on parishioners, who we hope
"Cafod Lent Fast Day collection - thank you for your will support a variety of fund raising efforts, it was decided
generous donations to this appeal. £2,461.87 was collected not to have the Parish Fair this year.
for Cafod's work. Many thanks too if you completed a gift aid
slip; each of these increases the donation by 25% at no extra In addition Christina Carr who has worked tirelessly over
cost to the donor and as a result, the collection from this the past number of years to organise the Fair has had to
parish will be increased by £265. Please continue to pray for step down and we would like to take this opportunity to
Cafod's work with the world's poorest communities."
say a special thanks to Christina for all her hard work and
support during this time.
With Christina stepping down we are looking for someone
to take on the organisation of next year’s fair so if you are
interested please contact us on 020 8650 0970 opt 1
This Friday is the first Friday in April so there will
be Exposition and Benediction at the Claver
Convent on Thursday (see back page) and in
the Church after 10 am Mass.
PRESBYTERY KITCHEN REFURBISHMENT
Work on the kitchen is nearly finished but please continue to
leave the forecourt free so that there is room for the priests to
park and sufficient room for the tradesmen to come and go.
Steve Hewitt is our wonderful WebMaster. He keeps the
St Edmund’s website updated with all the information and
news about our parish. Added to this he is going to be
running the 2017 London Marathon to raise funds for the
NSPCC. If you feel able to sponsor him you can do so by
going to https://goo.gl/kKh60E or we would be happy to
receive sponsorship money for Steve in the Office.
A number of Missio boxes were not returned for emptying
during March. If you didn't bring yours in please would you
leave it in the Sacristry or hand it in at the office. Your box
will be emptied and returned to the back of the Church
for collection.
REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS
Thank you to all who brought donations in last weekend. Your
constant generosity is so greatly appreciated by the refugees
living in the London Catholic Worker community in North
London to whom Fr Ashley takes all that you give.
GOOD FRIDAY WALK OF WITNESS
S T E W A R D S
N E E D E D
Once again St Edmund’s is participating
in the Churches Together in Beckenham
(CTiB) Walk of Witness to St George's
on Good Friday morning. Each Church
in CTiB has been asked to provide two
Stewards to assist in marshalling walkers
and directing traffic. A full briefing will be given by CTiB's
coordinator Julia Johnson before the walk starts. If you are
able to help with this, please give your name and an email or
telephone contact details to the Parish Office.
Thank you
THE DIVINE MERCY NOVENA
The Divine Mercy novena is prayed between Good Friday and
the Sunday of Divine Mercy, which is the Sunday following
Easter. Those praying the novena pray for the special intentions
of each day followed by the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
St. Faustina wrote that Jesus told her, “On each day of the
Novena you will bring to My heart a different group of souls and
you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy. On each day
you will beg My Father, on the strength of My passion, for the
graces for these souls”.
Please join us for our Divine Mercy Novena. We begin on
Good Friday at 7.30pm in the Church and continue until the
closing celebration on Divine Mercy Sunday on 23 April.
CLAVER CONVENT GARDEN PARTY
The Claver Sisters have changed the date of their Garden
Party. It will now take place at the Claver Convent on
Saturday the 8th July.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------We are raising funds for a priest in a riverside parish.
Fr Alexis Harolimana in Ntokou, diocese of Owando,
Republic of Congo, can only reach his
parishioners scattered along the Likouala river by a boat
with an outboard motor.
For the success of our Garden Party we need your help
and support. Any unwanted gifts you may have: toiletries,
bottles you may pick up during the Easter holidays, plants,
hand made crafts, cakes, etc. will be of great help. Or you
may just wish to contribute with a donation. As usual we
will have a raffle and rice and curry and many other stalls.
Please put the date in your diary - we look forward to
seeing you all.
