PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Commonwealth games fever comes to Woongoolba!
Today our students were treated to a special and rare event connected with the future
Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in 2018.
The games mascot, Borobi came to visit, talk to the students and teach them a dance.
Also, his friend, Sid, told the students about the Commonwealth Games and how he will
be working with students in the lead up to the games helping them learn more about the
Commonwealth Games.
Our school is part of the ‘Games Schools Connect Program’. Each school in the Gold
Coast has been allocated a partner country from the Commonwealth for the games. This
means that each school can learn more about that country, see their flag and recognise
that nation when they visit the Gold Coast in 2018. Our partner country for the games is
the Caribbean nation of Grenada.
Before the games was given to the Gold Coast (a couple of years ago) I visited a function
with the then school captains and met some delegates from Grenada who were visiting
the Gold Coast at the time. It is wonderful to be able to have this partner relationship with
Grenada and we will be able to learn more about Grenada in the next couple of years.
Woongoolba would like to thank Borobi for visiting us today and I want to add a special
thank you to all our great students for showing Borobi what a fantastic school we have.

Year 1 News – The Dragons
There is a hum of excitement around the year
1 room, as we head towards the end of the
year. We have recently enjoyed a visit from
Healthy Harold and the Life Education Van,
where we learned a lot about staying healthy
and personal safety. At the end of last term
we also had a visit from the local fire brigade
and learned how to be safe around fires and
in other emergencies. We have learned and
grown up so much and had a great year. It
won't be too long now... Christmas and year
2, here we come!
Tuckshop Tid-bits

Prep 2017
We are now taking names of students seeking to
enrol in Prep in 2017.
There has been a great
response from our
community and beyond to
bring their students to Woongoolba in 2017!
Please continue to contact the school office to
add your child’s name to the enrolment list.
German News
It was a very eventful excursion to
Oktoberfest for Teens last Thursday. A great
day was had by all who attended. Special
mention was made of Woongoolba by the
Honorary Consul for Germany, Herr
Professor Michael Rosemann, who
congratulated our school for coming dressed
in our wonderful costumes in his opening
speech.
Lauren A was also recognised as the overall
primary school winner for the German Week
and Oktoberfest for Teens Online Language
Perfect Competition. She received a goodie
bag of prizes as well as a $50 iTunes
voucher. Congratulations Lauren. Other
winners included Matthew M and Tilly B who
won prize packs for their Quiz competition
entries.
Well done Woongoolba for excellent
participation in the activities and setting a
great example to the other 52 schools who
attended the event.
Thank you to Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Pryce for
bravely accompanying the students ... the
yummy food and bakery items made it all
worthwhile!!

P&C NEWS
The next meeting will be on Wednesday,
November 9th at 6.30pm in the Leaders Centre
(under B Block).

in 2013. Winner: 2012 Life Education State School Award.
School Swimming
Next week, our whole student body will be
starting their intensive swimming training at the
Woongoolba Aquatic Centre each day from
Monday 24/10 through to
Friday Nov 4th.
5. Check in occasionally. When kids do their
homework all alone, their concentration
can often wander. Check in once in a while
and see how it's going. Ask if there are any
questions. Sometimes kids just need to talk
about a homework problem to figure out the
answer.
Students must bring with
them to school each day
their bathers, a towel and
a swim shirt for sun safety. Goggles and a
swimming cap are recommended.
Please remember, however, that homework is not
the curriculum and it is never meant to become a
negative distraction to the family. Always discuss
this with your child’s teacher if there are any
problems regarding homework.
Would parents please remember to ensure their
child’s belongings are labelled, both swimming
attire and school wear. It is so much easier to
return lost property to the rightful owner when it
has a name on it!
Oral language
One of the first and most important parts of a
student’s literacy development is oral language.
Children must develop appropriate
communication skills prior to further language use
(reading and writing for example). Oral language
starts very early in a child’s life and children need
guidance and modelling from adults around them.
We encourage parents and carers to consider this
as your child grows. Next year, our school will
commence a new oral language program for our
prep students to support our existing quality
reading programs.
For health and safety reasons long hair tied back
and jewellery should not be worn.
If your child is not swimming for a particular day,
please provide a note to the class teacher to
explain.
10 Tips to help your child with homework
While homework is not the most important part of
your child’s learning, a supportive and organised
homework routine may assist in helping make it
more useful. Here are some simple tips to help get
the most out of their homework.
1. A routine is good. Homework can be habit
forming and that's good news for you and
your child. Work out a homework schedule
and make sure children adhere to it. It won't
be long before homework is complete
without your getting involved.
2. Give space for homework. Distractions
and homework don't mix. So do your best
to create a bright and quiet space where
your child can concentrate on schoolwork.
Make sure it's away from distractions like
TV, music and loud siblings.
3. Practice makes perfect. Repetition
reinforces learning. That's why it's helpful
to have kids practice reading, writing and
maths with you every day. Ten to
15 minutes a day can work wonders,
whether reading a favourite book together,
or helping measure ingredients in the
kitchen.
4. "How was your day?" Every school day is
an adventure. Kids will do and learn so
much they'll be bursting to tell someone all
about it. So take a few moments every day
to chat about the school day—and be a
good listener.
