Biochemistry is the study of
the chemistry of life, a bridge between
biology and chemistry that studies how
complex chemical reactions give rise to life.
It is a hybrid branch of chemistry which
specializes in the chemical processes in living
organisms. It is the study of the structure
and function of cellular components, such as
proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids,
and other biomolecules.
Students are exposed to the most up-to-date
knowledge ranging from topics in basic
biochemistry to cutting-edge technology
employed in protein analysis, molecular
biology and proteomics and biochemical
toxicology.
The curriculum has been carefully designed
and regularly reviewed to enable students to
acquire a strong understanding of the basic
principles underlying metabolism and
regulatory mechanisms. The programme is
excellent preparation for students in
biochemistry research and professional
work, enabling them to manage the
challenges of the times.
The department of Biochemistry was
originally founded in the Faculty of Medicine
in 1963. Teaching was later taken over by the
Faculty of Science in 1997.
•To conduct and disseminate the results of
high quality research in the areas of
fundamental and applied Biochemistry
•To provide excellent teaching at the
undergraduate and postgraduate levels to a
diverse and dynamic population of students
•To provide the best possible service to the
Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of
Science, University of Malaya, the
community and society as a whole
•To Foster high quality research in the field
of Biochemistry
•To be the leader in Biochemical teaching
and research in the country
•To provide the best teaching and research
laboratories in the country
Many of our graduates follow industrial
careers, particularly in the research and
management areas of pharmaceuticals,
biotechnology, food technology and
agriculture. Similar opportunities exist for
life scientists in government and
independent laboratories involved with
medical research, public health, forensic
investigation, parasitology, and disease
research. In addition, graduate employers
often offer employment to graduates of any
discipline. The opportunity to study a
breadth of subjects within our degree
courses means that, while many of our
graduates go on to further study or
employment in their chosen subject areas,
others enter the professions and a wide
range of careers in industry, commerce and
the media.
The courses in your first year should provide
you with an understanding of the principles
of modern Biology and Chemistry.
In the second year, you will gain a deeper
comprehension of important topics such as
cell biology, genetics, immunology and
pharmacology.
In the final year, you will study more
advanced topics and engage in a laboratorybased research project.
Throughout the programme, you will be
acquiring new laboratory, data-handling and
communication skills. We hope to produce
well trained graduates with a broad
knowledge in Biochemistry and beyond.
