NOTES FROM PRINCIPAL ANGAIAK:
Christ’s blessings to each of you! I hope this week’s Comet Comments
finds each of you healthy and happy. Our days keep getting busier as
we move through the month of November! With our work schedules,
school schedules, and now- holiday schedules – in full swing, the days
can move by in blurring fashion as we begin to prepare for
Thanksgiving and Christmas.
So, have some of you begun purchasing your Christmas gifts? (Yikes already?!) When thinking of what to get your kids, consider this: One of
the greatest gifts we can give our children is the gift of time. I bet that if
we asked a group of adults what meant the most to them growing up,
we would hear fond memories of people who “had time for them.”
Given the fast pace of our society, we should take a few minutes and
think of ways we can build just a little more family time into our lives.

Here are a few simple ways to give our kids the gift of quality time:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
The family meal – Do everything you can to sit at the dinner table
together. This can be a relaxed time when the family can talk about
their day and just enjoy being together.
Family Traditions – These needn’t be elaborate. Children look forward
to making decorations, lighting the Advent Wreath (November 29 is
the first Sunday of Advent), crafting gingerbread houses, or any other
activity that the family does together routinely.
Pull out the board games! – Even young children enjoy sitting around a
board game playing as a family. This is a great opportunity to help
your child[ren] learn about being a good sport and have fun whether
winning or losing.
Be around and ready to listen – In order for children to want to talk with
their parents, it is important for us as parents, to be available. Whether
riding in the car, sitting on the couch, or just hanging out, it’s important
to create opportunities for children to share what’s on their minds.
Bundle up and head outside! - Take a few minutes and enjoy the
fleeting daylight, and the beautiful snow and wonder of God’s creation
around us. A short walk in Creamer’s Field, or a bit of time in the yard
is a no cost way of getting healthier, and builds family memories.
Your family may already be creating great memories of time together.
If you are, know that you are giving your child[ren] and invaluable gift.
As parents, it’s important that we remember it is the little gifts, often
free, that mean the most to our children. Our time is more precious
than we could ever imagine.

This week is a busy week for our athletic teams. Hockey will
be playing Hutch on Tuesday. The junior high basketball
teams and cheerleaders have several games, including a
trip to Valdez, and our volleyball girls will being making us
proud at the state tournament after a great season. Please
go out and support our Rams as they compete on the ice
and on the courts. Our athletic teams are a great example
of a theme that makes Jesuit education great. Men and
women for others. Here at Monroe, our small numbers can
make it a challenge to field a viable team, or to start a new
program. Every year though, our teams surprise us with
miracles. Students who never showed an interest in a sport
will come out to practice, every day, so that the studentathletes who love the sport can have a season. Every year,
the student body – and the Monroe community – supports
these new players and their teams, and every year these
teams take the competition further than we thought
possible. This motif, men and women for others, is not
exclusive to sports. As past coach of the Academic
Decathlon team, I have seen students study hard for extra
tests just so the students who love the events can have a
team. Men and women for others – it pervades our school,
students, faculty, and community. In the next couple of
weeks, that concept of service to others will dominate
student life as we commit ourselves to the penny drive to
support leukemia, to the canned food drive to help feed
those in need for the holidays, and, of course, RAMS day. Please help support our students as they give of themselves
to support these worthy causes. Monroe provides outsized
support with its canned food drive every year. Let’s keep
that tradition alive.
