Stephen O’Connor,
local author
Stephen O’Connor is a native of Lowell, where
much of his writing is set. He is the author of
Smokestack Lightning, a collection of short
stories, and the novels The Spy in the City of
Books, and The Witch at Rivermouth. His short
stories have appeared in The Massachusetts
Review, The Houston Literary Review, Aethlon,
Sobotka Literary Magazine, and elsewhere.
His short story “Work, Music and Love” recently
won the Helen Literary Award, while “St. Lucy’s
Day” received honorable mention in a short
story contest in the British journal, Open Road Review. He lives in Lowell with his wife Olga, and is
currently at work on a comic novel tentatively entitled This Is No Time to Quit Drinking.

Shifting Gears - a safe driving
workshop that covers issues facing
older drivers. The program looks

most common collisions for older drivers. Portions

Dementia is a devastating disease with huge
impacts for family, friends, and communities.
Whether diagnosed in the mid-stages of the disease
or as early-onset Alzheimer’s, many individuals fear
the isolation of potentially losing their friends, jobs,
and connection to the life they once knew.
For the friends of those who have been diagnosed
there is a lot of fear too. Will their friendship
become a one-way relationship? How do you now
treat this person who you care about deeply?

and support people you care about through their
diagnosis and journey with dementia.

The John Nesmith House reflects
the splendor of an era when Lowell
was home to some of America’s first
captains of industry. Today, Nesmith
House is owned by the Middlesex
Community College Foundation. In 1994, the
residence was restored to its former grandeur,
when more than 30 interior and landscape designers
This course explores contemporary issues in
education policy through the lens of teachers
and students. We will examine the challenges
facing students in public schools and the teaching
methodologies that seek to meet their needs.
We will then use this understanding to unpack
complicated issues in education policy, such as
school choice, accountability, and funding.

A CHALLENGE TO CIVILIZATION –
THE SCIENCE, POLITICS, AND ECONOMICS
OF CLIMATE CHANGE
CAMBODIA IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY
This talk will cover some basic
science about climate change and
then examine the politics around an
issue that seems to be controversial
only in the U.S. We will conclude
by exploring the economics of renewable energy
sources and green technologies to see whether there
is any hope for this fundamental challenge to the
future of human civilization.
Since the liberation of 1979,
Cambodia’s economy has
undergone a gradual transformation
from centrally planned to marketbased economy, making significant
progress from extreme poverty to a lower-middle
income country and to the next Asia’s Tiger
economy. This lecture starts with a brief overview of
the economic history of Cambodia, followed by the
discussion of major factors that integrate Cambodia
with the global economy.

We will begin our Alaska adventure in Skagway,
we’ll learn about the Yukon gold rush of 1897
and the famous Chilkoot Trail. Next, we will visit
Fairbanks and Anchorage. We will hike through the
magnificent scenery of Denali National Park. Lastly,
we will see glaciers and wildlife during a cruise
through Kenai Fjords National Park.

First, we will travel back in time to visit Sitka, the
Russian capital of Alaska. After visiting the state
capital, Juneau, we will move on to Glacier Bay
National Park. Next, we will visit three national
parks: Wrangell–St. Elias National Park, Katmai
National, and lastly, Lake Clark National Park to see
the Richard Proenneke historic site.

A master of 20th century Modernism, the
artistic career of Henri Matisse (1869 1954) proves his boundless creativity and
energy. This seminar presents an overview
of Henri Matisse’s life and art, beginning
with his powerful Fauvist work. Matisse’s
style continued to change and evolve, as
we see his subject matter gravitate around
the female form, leading to his mature style
focusing purely on color and form. Matisse’s
experimentation with reduction of space and
simplification of form, set the stage for the
incredible Cut-Outs series. $29

Through Music
MCC faculty member Anna Ward, soprano, will be joined by
Rudy Giron, countertenor, Drew Ricciardi, viola, and Elaine
Rombola, piano, for a program that reflects LGBT issues
through music from the 1600s until today.
Featured will be vocal duets by Claudio Monteverdi, arias by
George Frideric Handel, songs by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a
song cycle by Juliana Hall set to poetry by Elizabeth Bishop and
Edna St. Vincent Millay, plus And The Barriers Had Vanished,
a song cycle for soprano and viola by Dominick DiOrio.
