The Legends of King Arthur
Excalibur and the Sword in the Stone

Once upon a time a sword was set in a stone.
“Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise
born king of all England.”
Arthur, the secret son of King Uther Pendragon, became
King of Britain by successfully withdrawing the sword from
the stone. Merlin, the court magician, revealed the new king’s
parentage.
The miraculous sword Excalibur was given to him by the
mysterious Lady of the Lake. Lady of the Lake, Lady of
Avalon, the ruler of Avalon.

Was there ever a sword in a stone? Was the sword in the
stone Excalibur? Or was Excalibur given to Arthur by the
Lady of the Lake?
You will not find the answers in this programme, we will
only speculate…
Cliff Eastabrook:
Merlin took Arthur and placed him in fosterage with Sir
Ector, who already had a son called Sir Kay. And Arthur
grew up as a squire to Sir Kay.
And so it happened, that the whole country was in turmoil,
trying to find a new king after Uther’s death.

And Merlin placed a sword, point down, stuck in a great
block of marble. And he cast an inscription upon the stone
saying: “Whosoever shall draw forth this sword shall be
rightful King of all Britain.”
Many tried and many failed, kings from all around the
country, knights and noble men. But none could budge it
even one inch.
And then they took to fighting joust to see who would take
the right to try the sword. Sir Ector and Sir Kay went to the
joust and on the way, Sir Kay realised he did not have his
sword with him.

And his squire Arthur was sent to find his sword. He went
back to the house, but could not find the sword. And thinking
“Where can I get a sword for my knight? For he cannot go
and joust without one,” he went to the courtyard where the
marble block stood. And he pulled forth the sword, presented
it to his knight.
It was Sir Ector who recognised the hilt and the jewels upon
it. He said: “This is the sword from the stone. Where did you
get this?” And Sir Kay said: “I drew it forth.”

And when they went before the other kings, they said: “Show
us.” So Sir Kay returned the sword into the stone. But when
he tried to pull it out again, he could not.
He confessed that it was Arthur, and Arthur drew it forth.

Everybody was amazed. How did the squire do this? And a
boy of ignoble birth. “Do it again!”
So he placed it back in the stone and others tried, but again
they could not shift it. Arthur once more, one-handed, with
no effort, pulled the sword free.
A third time they made him place it back in the stone. Again
others tried, they exerted all their force and all their strength,
but however great and however noble they were, they could
not bring the sword from the stone. And yet again Arthur
drew it out.

This should have settled the matter of who would be King of
all Britain, but there were some kings who said: “We will not
serve underneath a king who is just a squire. A king with no
noble lineage.”
And so the country was again at war.
Now eventually, to settle the battles, Merlin came forward
and spoke to a great meeting, saying: “Arthur is the son of
Uther.” And he told the story of how it had happened.

It must have been a shock for Arthur to find out that he is the
rightwise born king of all England. Julie Hayes in

He doesn’t realise this, he doesn’t know that he is who he is,
apparently. Some legends say his mother dies in childbirth,
so yes, it’s said that he is working or he is with a family and
he’s just basically a peasant.

He pulls out the sword and says: “I’ve fetched you a new
sword because you’ve lost yours.” And it’s the sword in the
stone, so everybody then knows that he is the true king. But
they don’t really believe him, so they put the sword back and
then he has to take it out again. And then they realise that
yes, he is the true king.
I myself have read various different versions on how Arthur
gets his sword, how Excalibur comes to be his. There are so
many different writings about how King Arthur’s story is
told.
I don’t know, I really don’t know. There are so many
different sources, so many different stories, and they all meld
together and work together. And some people take a bit from
here and some people take a bit from there, so it really is
difficult to tell what is the truth of this and what is not.

Now some say the sword that came from the stone was called Excalibur, and
is Arthur’s famous sword. But others tell this story:
That Merlin took Arthur down by the shores of the lakes of Avalon in the
summer country. And there they were met by Morgan le Fay, the Lady of the
Lake.

And she said: “Look upon the waters. What do you see?” And Arthur,
looking out upon the lake, saw an arm clad in white samite rise up from
beneath the water, holding forth a sword in a beautiful scabbard, girthed with
jewels.

And Morgan said: “Go. Take the sword.”
So Arthur took a boat out upon the lake and grasped the sword. The arm
gently slid back beneath the water.
