Mary was known to most people during her life as “Enie”,
she was born Mary Helena Coutts on July 17, 1917 at
Loreburn Saskatchewan to parents Samuel and Inez (nee
Calder) Coutts. She was the youngest of three sisters and
was born a twin, however her twin brother William Samuel
did not survive the birth. Her older sisters were Doris Van
Zandbergen, Greta Forster and Eileen Butler. Enie was
raised on a farm about eleven miles west of Loreburn. She
had many stories and recollections of helping with farm
chores, milking cows and travel with horses to town and
country dances. In cold weather, they heated stones and
placed them under fresh straw in the back of the sleigh to
help keep warm.
Her parents decided to buy a house in Saskatoon to make it
easier for the kids to go to school and purchased their home
at 1705 Lorne Avenue. She attended Thornton Elementary
School and later Buena Vista School, both situated on Lorne
Avenue. Following her schooling, Enie lived with her sister
Greta and brother-in-law Mike Forster at Allen,
Saskatchewan where she worked at the telephone office and
learned to operate the switch board.
Jack and Enie first met when she went to Plenty to work in
the telephone office in 1937. Their first meeting was at the
Robbie Burns night held here in the United Church basement
that year. They were married on May 24, 1938 at Loreburn
and enjoyed 68 years of marriage.
Jack worked in Vancouver on the night shift doing ferry boat
repair when they were first married. They came back to
Saskatchewan where Jack was buying grain for
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool at Veralum and Hawoods. In
1942 they returned to Plenty to take up farming and raise a
family. Iain Clair was born in 1944, Glen in 1945 and Calla
in 1956.
During these years, she was active in various community
organizations such as Women’s Institute, the Garvagh Circle
of the Plenty United Church and the local square dance
group. She acted as a CGIT leader and enjoyed taking part in
local theatre productions. Jack and Enie were regulars at all
the local dances.
Enie’s main focus was her home and family. She had a
reputation with her family as making the best raisin pies ever
